A practical course in the fundamentals of machinery diagnostics for anyone who works with rotating machinery, from operator to manager, from design engineer to machinery diagnostician. This comprehensive book thoroughly explains and demystifies important concepts needed for effective machinery malfunction diagnosis: (A) Vibration fundamentals: vibration, phase, and vibration vectors. (B) Data plots: timebase, average shaft centerline, polar, Bode, APHT, spectrum, trend XY, and the orbit. (C) Rotor dynamics: the rotor model, dynamic stiffness, modes of vibration, anisotropic (asymmetric) stiffness, stability analysis, torsional and axial vibration, and basic balancing. Modern root locus methods (pioneered by Walter R. Evans) are used throughout this book. (D) Malfunctions: unbalance, rotor bow, high radial loads, misalignment, rub and looseness, fluid-induced instability, and shaft cracks. Hundreds of full-color illustrations explain key concepts, and several detailed case studies show how these concepts were used to solve real machinery problems. A comprehensive glossary of diagnostic terms is included.

This book seeks to make an original contribution to the knowledge base underpinning ultrasonic metal welding (USMW), particularly for the manufacturing of lithium-ion (li-ion) battery cells, modules, and packs as used in electric vehicles. The contributors to the book represent a team of leading experts in the field. Since its commercialization in the early 1990s, the lithium-ion (li-ion) battery has seen rapid growth due to its advantages of high voltage and high power/energy density. The growth has become particularly strong during the past decade with the development of li-ion battery powered electric vehicles. The book focuses mainly on two-layer and multi-layer aluminum (with and without anodizing) and copper (with and without nickel coating) welding configurations. Thus, its value to the practitioners in li-ion batteries and battery electric vehicles is self-evident. The theories and methods presented in the book are highly transferable and extendable to all other li-ion battery applications, and can be of significant values to battery manufacturers and the electric vehicle industry in general. Furthermore, the new knowledge generated can drive the development of such innovative technologies as single-sided USMW, and thermally enhanced USMW for multiple layers of thick-sheets and hard-to-weld materials. It is expected that the book may have even broader implications in understanding and developing more effective solid state joining processes such as cladding, impact welding, friction stir welding, and ultrasonic consolidations for additive manufacturing, which are all strongly governed by the similar solid-state physics.

This monograph summarizes the major developments on nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulics over the last fifty years, primarily for the water-cooled reactors, and provides a direction for the future thermal-hydraulic developments for water-cooled, including small modular reactors or SMR, and Generation IV reactors. This includes discussion on the steady-state reactor thermal hydraulics including subchannel analysis, evolution of emergency core cooling systems (ECCS) from active to fully passive systems to remove the decay heat, and development and consolidation of the best-estimate safety analysis methodology. With substantial increase in computing power, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools for single-phase and multi-phase flows are being used more these days to address some of the important reactor thermal-hydraulics phenomena which could not be analyzed earlier using the traditional one-dimensional or coarse three-dimensional analysis tools. Development of multi-physics methodology encompassing neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, thermal-mechanical and coolant chemistry has also started.

This Handbook is a direct result of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) initiative on Integrated/Sustainable Building Equipment and Systems (ISBES), with the objective of filling voids in the literature and motivating advances on integrated mechanical systems for sustainable buildings. The main focus of this Volume I is on integrated energy systems and is organized from the current state of knowledge in areas of energy equipment and building energy modeling tools, to emerging topics in a wide range of areas encompassing combined heat and power, building energy storage systems, and advanced control strategies for mechanical energy systems in buildings. In addition, the integration of renewable energy and passive cooling and heating strategies is particularly addressed, closing with advanced techniques to analyze energy demands at the neighborhood and city scales. The contributors have a diverse set of skills and extensive experience in building engineering. Readers will find the content to be relevant and useful to their practice and insightful to inspire new advances and developments in Energy Systems for Sustainable Buildings.

This booklet is intended to supplement the textbook selected for use in the basic Mechanical Engineering design course. The materials presented herein can be covered in depth over a period of three hours, or one week of a typical single semester course. This booklet has been written in simple terms so that it can be read and understood by third year Mechanical Engineering students who have had little or no exposure to the fundamental concepts of occupational safety and health. Topics covered: Anticipating common errors and modes of failure, Designing safe tooling and safe manufacturing workstations, Hazard reduction and control techniques available, Optimizing the man machine interface, Establishing cost/benefit justification, and Finding and using safety codes and standards.

Through the theories, strategies, and broad range of case studies in Taguchi Methods For Robust Design, you gain exposure to the entire spectrum of robust design and master its application. You also learn to prevent quality problems in the early stages of product developement/design, to use the dynamic signal-to-noise (SN) ratio as the performance index for robustness of product functions, and to evaluate methods of data collection and analyze case studies of parameter design.
