We Burn on Friday is Richard Manieri''s account of growing up in the Italian-American community of Philadelphia, with hilarious tales of learning his way around a boxing ring, getting through weekly confession at his Catholic church (name and serial number only), and taking that frightening walk to meet a girl across the dance floor. His story extends to his determined but often stymied journey into broadcast journalism -- including his first job at a radio station, where he learned, after he was hired, that his work included burning the station''s trash every Friday. And all of it is told through the prism of his deep and abiding love for his father, who, one way or the other, was with him every step of the way.

Like so many of us, Margret Kopala lost a significant portion of her life savings in the stock market crash of 2008. Unlike us, however, she went on a long and intense financial odyssey to find out what caused the losses and what she could do to protect herself in the future. Armed with her skills as a journalist and public policy analyst, fueled by equal measures of fear and determination, and mentored by successful investment strategist and financial broadcaster John Budden, Kopala researched and wrote this magisterial analysis of how Russian economist Nikolai Kondratieff’s long-wave theory is playing out in what many today describe as a financial Winter. Along the way, she is introduced to financial experts familiar with Kondratieff scholarship. John Budden’s interviews in the book with Dean LeBaron, J. Anthony Boeckh, Ian Gordon, Larry Jeddeloh, Don Lindsey, the late Lord William Rees-Mogg, Jim Rogers, Eric Sprott, and Ronald-Peter Stöferle show how investors must put a new spin on asset allocation and security of their assets: like a dog that buries bones in different places, we would be advised to allocate our assets to different parts of the world – and to ensure that a good portion of those assets include gold, the only continuous basis of wealth across history and around the world. Kopala explores the global, national, and personal effects of: overconsumption; underproduction; energy and innovation; the printing of money to "save" the economy; competitive devaluations; deflation, reflation, and inflation; and war (the ultimate economic crisis). She documents those technologies that seeded previous New Economy Spring seasons -- from the era of canals to those of railroads, automobiles, and infotech -- and probes today’s innovations most likely to seed the Next New Economy that we desperately need if we are to escape the doldrums of the current financial Winter. With trenchant explanations of how individuals can achieve portfolio strength by first preserving capital then being vigilant about the financial effects of politics, economic theory, culture, and our own choices, The Dog Bone Portfolio is a gift to investors, policy-makers, and, ultimately, nations everywhere.

In this essay of extraordinary scope and depth, Eric McLuhan explores faith as a form of knowing. He does so against the backdrop of preliterate man’s concrete, bodily submersion in the putting on of poetry and drama (the practice of mimesis) and post-literate man’s bodiless submersion in electronic communication, in which sender and receiver are everywhere and nowhere at once. In traversing the Aristotelian and Medieval concept of sensus communis, he examines synesthesia as, in effect, its operating system and charts the modern and contemporary mandate to embrace the discarnate. He washes up on the shore of religion as he uncovers a trinity of knowledge, that is, three kinds of sensus communis – the five physical senses, the four intellectual senses of Scripture (historical, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical), and the three theological senses (faith, hope, and charity)—each of the three complete in itself yet interacting with one another. A fascinating odyssey that will dazzle the senses.

“Coleman’s keen observations about her long life make INLAND NAVIGATION BY THE STARS not only an intimate personal memoir but also a work of social history. Her reflections of the times she grew up in are compassionate yet critical and provide a unique and engaging insight into both Coleman herself and the challenges that women in Canada have faced over the last eighty years.” —SONJA LARSEN, award-winning author of Red Star Tattoo FROM THE AUTHOR OF I’LL TELL YOU A SECRET Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, and North Hatley, Quebec, Anne Coleman was a combination of pre-feminist independent girl and literary dreamer. With literature as her source of information about life she married Frank, a handsome, brilliant Slovenian whose family had lost their famous Grand Hotel Toplice in Bled, northern Yugoslavia, to the Nazis and then to the Communists. He was just the type of man-with-a-troubled-past her reading had demanded she find. The marriage alternated between happiness and darkness, with Frank descending into bouts of alcoholism and depression as a result of his childhood trauma at the hands of the Nazis. After a dramatic escape from the marriage with her two small children, Anne had to start over. She earned a Master’s degree in English from Bishop’s University, and then taught for five years at Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s School in Montreal and for thirty years at a college in Kamloops, BC, now Thompson Rivers University. Before heading west she was part of the liveliest literary gatherings of the era. Her circle included Hugh MacLennan, Leonard Cohen, Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje. In the 1970s and 1980s Anne’s feminist awakening was a call to arms for women at her college and beyond. And for men too. The male professors who had hitherto reigned unchallenged fought back as best they could with mockery and threats. But Anne struggled to live her feminism fully in her private life. She stayed far too long in a second marriage by going into survival-mode denial and immersing herself in her teaching, students friends. Her primary solace became the flora and fauna of “Narnia,” a 160-acre property south of Kamloops with an old Quebec-style house built during the marriage. One section of her book is titled “How Beauty Makes Things Possible,” and her descriptions of nature there and elsewhere in the book, whether of the hills, lake and forests of North Hatley, the top-of-the-world wildness outside Kamloops or the gardens and coastal areas of Victoria, may prove to be among some of the finest in all of Canadian writing.

HIS FIRST SERMONS were preached in 1930 as a five-year-old standing on a kitchen chair after a service in a little church in Estevan, Saskatchewan. And following his conversion as a sixteen-year-old, Donald N. Bastian would go on to become a well-known and much-loved preacher in pulpits both local and international. Now, as a ninety-five-year-old, he looks back on a life that was a rich blend of:FAMILY LIFE growing up in the home of English immigrants from Lancashire; meeting the love of his life, Kathleen Swallow, while in school in Ontario; and welcoming four children into the world.FAITH becoming aware during his teenage years of a call to full-time ministry; ministering as a song evangelist, initially as a hitchhiker across the Canadian prairies; and studying at four church-related schools after dropping out of high school at age sixteen.AND MINISTRY pastoring a church in Lexington, Kentucky, while a student at Asbury Theological Seminary; building strong congregations at churches in New Westminster, British Columbia, and Greenville, Illinois; overseeing pastors as a bishop in the United States in Canada; and writing four previous books.By turns touching, revealing, inspiring, and entertaining,FROM KITCHEN CHAIR TO PULPITis a rare look at just how extraordinary the pastoral life can be.
