Have you ever wondered what our body is made up of and what it looks like under a microscope? How does our body work and how can we protect it against dangerous invaders? Our body is made up of four main types of tissues and 200 different types of cells organized into groups, working together, forming the organs and systems of our body. A pathologist, like me, is a doctor who studies tissues and cells under a microscope and has the essential knowledge to identi-fy and describe their diseases. This work is a long, lonely, scientific journey, where hundreds of his-tological images alternate daily in front of our eyes like scenes from a silent movie. This micro-scopic, lonely journey becomes magical when cells inadvertently form images of beauty similar to that found in paintings. Images of childhood memories and drawings, like a flower, a heart, an animal, a toy, shapes and colours changing with every moment, remind us of works of art created with sophistication and devotion by a great artist.Get ready for a journey into our wonderful, magical inner world; the organs and systems of our body. Page by page you will discover the amazing images of our tissues and cells revealed under the microscope. You will also learn how to protect yourselves against invisible enemies, viruses, and germs. Welcome to a unique scientific journey! You will be amazed at the beauty of knowledge! The creation of this book was the result of a collective effort between a group of people who worked with me and the publishing house that implemented it. Our common denominator was the magical combination of Science and Art. First of all, I would like to deeply thank, Niki Papatheochari, a diverse and significant personality, who, through her unique work, embodies a picture of perpetual creativity. It is a special honour for me that she prefaced the first edition of my book and contributed valuable advice and inspirational interventions. I thank her for warmly embracing this effort from beginning to end, and for the invaluable knowledge that she generously offered, both as a scientist and as a human being. I wholeheartedly thank the Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Athens Vasileios Golematis, a prominent figure in the global medical and academic community, for prefacing the second edition of my book. Professor Vasileios Golematis, a distinguished scientist and an exceptional man, is a model university teacher and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his students and colleagues. I would like to warmly thank the medical students Vagia Karapepera, for her wonderful sketches inspired by my lectures in Histology, and Michael Tsierkezos, for setting the book's text to music from which the accompanying video clip emerged. I would also like to thank Eleni Nalbandi for her valuable assistance in editing. Finally, I am really thankful to my family and all those who helped me with their know-how and moral support in completing this original project. Maria Lambropoulou

This book and the study that preceded it highlight the pioneering discoveries through which physicians and biomedical researchers of Greek origin contributed to the progress of clinical medicine, biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry at the global level in the 200 years from the Greek revolution of 1821 to 2021.The book represents one of the many initiatives that Greeks from Greece and abroad pursued to promote scientific excellence. The selection of the 63 individuals among more than 120 nominees, apart from the criteria of bibliographic references, was made with unanimous approval by the scientific council for the originality, timeliness, and global impact of their work, but also for their leading role in international scientific initiatives.

Botany, like other branches of western science, has its roots in ancient Greece, with Theophrastos of Eressos (372-287 B.C.) generally considered to have been the first botanist. Modern botanical studies in the area started with the travels of John Sibthorp and Ferdinand Bauer in 1786-1787, the results of which were subsequently published in the great Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana, appearing in ten heavy folio volumes in the period 1806-1840. An annotated re-issue was prepared by Strid & Strid (2009-2013). For a brief history of the botanical exploration of Greece from the time of Sibthorp to the present, see Strid (2020a).The present Atlas covers the whole of Greece. Maps have been generated from the Flora Hellenica Database which was started in 1989 and now comprises 1,052,338 geo-referenced records, 436,353 of which have been registered by the present author. Records in the database comprise 502,882 herbarium collections and 321,759 literature reports, the rest being field notes, photographs, etc. This Atlas will provide a baseline for future studies of Greek biodiversity.

For hundreds of years the Athos peninsula in north-eastern Greece has been inhabited only by Orthodox monks. The absence of grazing animals and largescale agriculture means that its flora and vegetation are closer to the pristine stage than anywhere else in the Mediterranean area. After introductory text on general features, vegetation, history of botanical exploration, etc., this work lists c. 1,500 species of vascular plants in the area with brief descriptions and notes on ecology, distribution, etc. About 80 per cent of the species are illustrated in a photo appendix. The book is based on extensive field work by the authors as well as surveys of relevant literature and herbarium specimens. A foreword has been provided by the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Each dawn, the old man walks the same crumbling path to the sea. Each dawn, the tide meets him. The memory that refuses to fade. But this morning, something shifts. The water feels warm. The sea, wine-dark, eternal, weaves the man's tapestry once again, back to where it all began. Or where it all ended. As he wades deeper, time begins to fold. The years dissolve into one long ripple: a mother who walked into the waves; a boy left on the shore; a woman who made him believe in illusions and choice. Beneath it all, the Wine-Dark sea waits, patient, remembering what he tried to forget. As the present dissolves into the past, he must decide whether to return or finally let go of ""what was, is, and what might yet be"".

The Aegean Sea, the original Archipelago of the Greeks and Romans, is a truly unique sea. Located among three continents, each one leaving a distinct mark on local biodiversity, the Aegean comprises over 6,000 islands that vary extensively in size, age and palaeogeographical history and are home to hundreds of endemic species. This is the first thorough scientific compendium dealing with the terrestrial components of the archipelago's biodiversity. The 48 experts that have authored its 16 chapters offer a detailed account of research that has been done so far in many animal and plant taxa, as well as a review of the geology and paleogeography, the phylogeography and the biogeography of Aegean Islands, highlighting its importance as a paradigmatic system for such studies at a global scale. The volume is dedicated to Professor Moysis Mylonas, mentor of the majority of authors, who retired in 2018. Professor Mylonas devoted his entire career to research on Aegean biodiversity and biogeography, founded the Natural History Museum of Crete (at the University of Crete), and has been the founder of the ecological and evolutionary biogeography 'school of thought' in Greece.

The Illustrated Guide to Microsurgical Techniques in the Rat (with elements of surgical anatomy) could serve as the manual of a microsurgery class. It is addressed to surgeons who want to learn microsurgery, while taking a class or working on their own in some laboratory, in order to use microsurgery in research or clinical practice. The elements of surgical anatomy present in the text are rather necessary because the microscope is going to magnify this lack of knowledge.

A handbook for obstetrics and gynecology residents who are starting to elaborate on laparoscopic surgery which does not aim to present new techniques nor to illustrate the history and evolution of laparoscopic surgery. Instead the authors have created a comprehensive text able to provide the minimum knowledge for one to operate safely and with confidence. They believe that a minimum proficiency in laparoscopy is necessary for every new gynecologist. The book has been designed to live in every resident's pocket and not his library. To stimulate further studying a list of suggested literature can be found at the end of each chapter. In recent years laparoscopy has been used more and more in the management of gynecologic cancer we felt that it was necessary to allocate a significant portion of this handbook on the laparoscopic management of gynecologic malignancies. In addition a chapter on robotic surgery has been included. At the end of this handbook the reader can find algorithms regarding troubleshooting and management of emergency situations in laparoscopy.

The idea for this book came to the author when he was working in the Accident and Emergency Department of Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham as a senior house officer. Although the theoretical level of his medical knowledge was satisfactory and comparable with that of his colleagues, he lagged behind in dealing with cases. This was a consequence of the fact that he was unable within a short time to selectively apply the knowledge that would have allowed him to distinguish the important from the less important, to function in an abstract way and to apply a simple algorithm to solve the diagnostic problem. This book represents an attempt to decrypt and simplify the way of handling emergency cardiology cases and is directed mainly at the young doctor. At the end of each chapter there is an algorithm that focuses on the basic diagnostic points and the main therapeutic actions for handling the illness. The composition of the text is based for the most part on the existing guidelines of scientific associations. However, in many cases only the most essential information that assists in the management of an emergency case has been used. For this reason, the algorithms offer only a rough guide to patient management and may need modifications according to the peculiarities of the case and the doctor's judgment. The text that precedes the algorithm provides the necessary theoretical substrate to allow the reader to assimilate the algorithmic evaluation of the emergency illness. In order to facilitate the young doctor's therapeutic management of the case, the way of preparing and administering intravenous solutions is described, while representative brand names of the main cardiological drugs are included.

The first edition of Atlas of Surgical Anatomy for General Surgeons, published in 1985, was well regarded and strong interest in it has continued. During the time it has been out of print an overwhelming number of inquiries from people wanting to acquire a copy have been received. So, obviously there was a need for a new edition.Another reason for reissuing this book is out hope that its increased emphasis on the modern philosophy about embryological anomalies and variations of anatomical entities, as well as a few remarks about technique, will help surgeons avoid anatomical complications. The need for additional information about embryology was dictated by the reality that today in medical schools instruction in embryology (and unfortunately, also anatomy) is poor, or even non-existent. The enriched embryological content is reflected in the new title, Gray's & Skandalakis' Atlas of Surgical Anatomy and Embryology for General Surgeons.

This edition is a record of James Watson’s historic visit to Greece in 2011 and 2016 at the Postgraduate Program «Medical Chemistry» conferences of the University of Patras. At these conferences, with James Watson as the honored person, the opportunity was given for the Greek University Community to get to know the great research-er up close. The discovery of the structure and function of the double-stranded DNA of Watson and Crick was one of the most important achieve-ments of the human mind and a huge step of man in his course through the centuries. It is considered the most important discovery after the formulation of the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin. The discovery of the function of DNA confirmed the theory of evolution and is now the core and reference point of all sciences that evolve over time, drawing on the wisdom of deciphering the secret of the molecule of life, in the service of all sciences.Knowledge of the structure of the DNA molecule and the genome that carries the genetic information has opened new horizons in the fields of molecular biology and gives new perspectives to the science of biology and medicine for new therapies. For their momentous discovery, Watson and Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1962 and now belong to the pantheon of pioneers of the human intellect alongside the leading figures whose work has influenced human thought.Their discovery led to the revision of the fundamental rules of all the sciences and the perception with which man saw himself and the world. Their discovery was the beginning of a new world that saw and explained life and its mysteries in the light of scientific truth.Watson and Crick will be referred to the next generations alongside the leading figures of human thought. The discovery and deciphering of DNA was the great leap of medicine after Hippocrates and Watson and Crick’s Eureka –we discovered the secret of life– was the most important statement ever heard after Archimedes’ Eureka. For Watson’s visit to Greece and the warm welcome reserved for him by the Greek academic community, in Patras in 2011 and in Spetses in 2016, the next generations will refer with honor for our country. The State honored him in both of his visits to our country for his contribution to science and society and as an ardent philhellene. He had expressed himself with admiration for the Greek classical culture as the birthplace and cradle of democracy and modern culture. In 2012, Watson sent a letter to the US President Barack Obama and the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy asking for Greece’s support during the financial crisis, and he was the first to sign the fifteen Nobel laureates’ letter to the European leadership in 2015, with which they sought the support of research and Greek Universities. The European Leadership ( Jean-Claude Juncker, Martin Schulz, Donald Tusk) responded positively to the letter of the Nobel laureates and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education launched in 2016 the establishment of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) to support research in Greek universities and research institutes of the country. The University of Patras honored him with the proclamation to an honorary doctorate after the proposal of the Department of Medi-cine and a masterpiece sculpture was erected in the courtyard of the Department of Biology representing the Double Helix DNA, honouring Watson and Crick. The monumental DNA work of Efstathios Leontis, which captures the evolution of species, unique worldwide for its architecture, adorns the University of Patras and is a pole of attraction for visitors from Greece and abroad. We are pleased to present this historical archive of James Watson’s visits to Greece, which includes stations of his journey, events and incidents that followed his visit to Greece and unpublished photographic material of his visits and speeches in our country. We hope that you will enjoy it and live with us the historical moments of his visit to Greece. Our country and the scientific community are proud for the reception and hospitality they offered to the leading researcher of the century and to which the next generations will honourably mention.

On 3 May 2017, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and its Medical School, completed 180 years of continuous and uninterrupted operation. Celebration of this noteworthy anniversary deserved something special. To that end, the authors decided to prepare and publish an atlas of illustrated representative samples of the Medical School's extensive pathologicalspecimens collection. The museum is housed in a specially designed area of the Medical School's 1st Department of Pathology and is the foremost and most extensive of its kind in Greece. It is continuously enriched with specimens selected from the 40,000 cases per year handled by the 1st Department of Pathology. The collection portrays the intertemporal course of various diseases commonly occurring in Greece. Incidence of several of these diseases has been significantly reduced through associated research and its contribution to the evolution of modern medicine.

Covers a very important subject - a common parasitic disease that may require surgical treatment that is especially prevalent in parts of the developing world. As such it will be of specific interest to specialists working in South America, Africa, the Middle East, Southern Europe, and Asia.Readers are informed and updated on the history, epidemiology, diagnosis (laboratory) treatment (both medical and surgical), and finally in prevention and health policy measures.
