Are we alone in the universe? Do aliens exist? Or are we, ourselves, the strangers in our own worlds? Conceived around the title Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International, curated by Douglas Fogle, explores the increasingly relevant yet perplexing proposition of what it means to be human in the world today. The question, "Is there life on Mars?" is a rhetorical one, posing a metaphorical quest to explore humanity's response to a world where global events challenge and seem to threaten our everyday existence. Working in a range of media, from micro to macro levels of experience, from tragedy to comedy, the 40 artists from 17 countries in the exhibition explore the alien inside each of us. They include Doug Aitken, Kai Althoff, Vija Celmins, Bruce Conner, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Daniel Guzmán, Mike Kelley, Barry McGee, Wilhelm Sasnal, David Shrigley, Rudolf Stingel, Paul Thek, Wolfgang Tillmans and Andro Wekua, among others. In questioning the absurdity of our lives while demonstrating hopeful aspirations for the future of humankind, these artists foreground the poetic over the monumental and the intimate over the heroic. In the end, the exhibition asks if we ourselves are already on Mars.

A handsome primer on the work of William Henry Fox Talbot. This beautiful, small format publication serves as a primer on the work of William Henry Fox Talbot, a true interdisciplinary innovator who drew on his knowledge of art history, botany, chemistry and optics to become one of the inventors of photography in 1839. Talbot’s ‘photogenic drawings’ (photograms), calotypes and salted paper prints are some of the first ever examples of images captured on paper. Accompanying an exhibition at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh opening in November 2017, this book brings together approximately 30 photographs by Talbot that demonstrate his wide ranging interests, including nature, still life, portraiture, architecture and landscape. Approximately one quarter of the featured images have been unpublished since Talbot’s time. Through thematic groupings elucidated by noted Talbot scholar Larry Schaaf, the book reveals the photographer’s early striving to test the boundaries of his medium at a historic moment when art and science intersected. With its luminous reproductions of Talbot’s fragile works, this publication demonstrates that, in its earliest days, photography required a form of magic making and innovation that continues to inspire people today.

An alphabetized index of more than 50 fresh terms for thinking with and through design objects as contributed by leading design scholars, critics and practitionersA fresh take on evaluating everyday objects at home or in museums, this experimental publication from Carnegie Museum of Art explores how language can shape and expand contemporary discourse around design, decorative arts and craft collections. Following the cultural upheavals of the Covid-19 era, curators of the museum's Decorative Arts and Design department invited a cohort of leading academics, designers, educators and critics to respond to the question, "What is the language we need now to reconsider design objects?" This ambitious book compiles their answers, comprising 50 essays authored by nearly as many contributors from multiple disciplines—pulling from each response a key term that is indexed and organized alphabetically. From Ableism to Emotion, Harm to Loved, Remixed to Symmetry, the publication puts forward multiple points of entry and inquiry that spark new meaning for design fans and general museum visitors alike. Lushly illustrated with 200 plates from the museum's renowned design collection, A Lexicon for Design offers a thrilling visual and linguistic survey.

A landmark survey of Black American photojournalism spanning 1945 to 1984, chronicling a critical period in the civil rights movements in the United StatesThis volume presents work by 57 Black photographers and contributions from scholars such as Joy Bivins, Tina M. Campt and Gerald Horne, chronicling historic events and daily life in the United States from the conclusion of World War II in 1945 to the presidential campaigns of 1984, including the civil rights movements through the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Drawn from archives and collections in the care of journalists, libraries, museums, newspapers, photographers and universities, the photographs in the catalog were circulated and reviewed in publishing offices across the country.Responding to a dearth of stories about Black lives told from the perspectives of Black people, Black publishers and their staff created groundbreaking editorial and photojournalistic methods and news networks. During a period of urgent social change and civil rights advocacy, newspapers and magazines, including the Afro American News, Atlanta Daily World, Pittsburgh Courier, Chicago Defender and Ebony, transformed how people were able to access seeing themselves and their communities. Their impact on the media landscape continues into the digital present. The catalog is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at Carnegie Museum of Art. The exhibition and catalog are both designed by artist David Hartt, and organized and edited by Charlene Foggie-Barnett, Charles ""Teenie"" Harris, community archivist, and Dan Leers, curator of photography, in dialogue with an expanded network of archivists, curators, historians and scholars.Photographers include: Harry Adams, Anthony Barboza, Kwame Brathwaite, Don Hogan Charles, Adger Cowans, Guy Crowder, Roy DeCarava, Doris Derby, Bob Douglas, Louis Draper, Theodore Gaffney, Charles "Teenie" Harris, Chester Higgins, Kojo Kamau, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Marilyn Nance, Gordon Parks, Ming Smith, Bruce Talamon, Deborah Willis-Ryan.

An examination of the critical links between Venetian and American glass artistsVenice has been a preeminent glass center since the sixteenth century, and for more than 500 years European factories and designers have tried to emulate the city's success by adapting or copying designs and techniques associated with the Venetian masters. Since the 1950s, American artists and designers have also looked to Venice for inspiration, traveling there to immerse themselves in traditional glass factory environments and working directly with Venetian masters. As the 1960s Studio Glass movement burgeoned and flourished, Venetian masters also began to travel to the United States, not only to teach but also to learn. A stimulating and exciting dialogue was born, which continues to this day. This volume examines the critical links between Venetian and American artists. Among other things, it covers early American designers, Robert Willson/Fucina degli Angeli, Americans in Venice (Dale Chihuly), Chandeliers, Venetians in America (Lino Tagliapietra), New Italians, Venini Revitalized, Josiah McElheny and Venetian Techniques.

From Russian court to the mountains of Tibet, and from the laboratories of Pittsburgh to the salons of Park Avenue, the extraordinary career of the artist and entomologist Andrey Avinoff (1884-1949) has never been surveyed in its entirety. Avinoff created a rich body of effusive, fantastical, Symbolist watercolor paintings that express yearnings both mystical and homoerotic, exploding beyond the strictures of his equally esteemed entomological research ("I bow to scientific fact until five o'clock," he once declared. "After that I may have other ideas"). Andrey Avinoff: In Pursuit of Beauty accompanies the first exhibition devoted to this visionary in more than 50 years. Reproducing botanical illustrations, Symbolist watercolors, apocalyptic scenes, dance subjects and homoerotic drawings (many of which the artist made for his friend Alfred Kinsey), it elaborates the work through Avinoff's identity as a gay man and situates him firmly within the culture of Russia's bountiful Silver Age.

Using photography as a language, Shannon Ebner (born 1971) examines the signs, symbols, letters, words and graphical icons we encounter in the world. Auto Body Collision documents Ebner's most recent ongoing project, a multipart series of photographs that began on a trip to Italy in 2014. Ebner has been collecting language taken from signs, seeking out repetitions of terms such as "Auto Body Collision" and "Automotive." In dissecting found language and coupling it with her own, Ebner establishes connections between the terms "auto," "body," "motive" and "collision." The themes of Ebner's new work include the circulatory and the network, performance and its relationship to the body, and collision, in terms both literal and conceptual.Auto Body Collision, designed in collaboration with the artist, includes more than 150 never-before-published photographs, as well as essays by Alex Klein, Tina Kukielski and Mark Owens.

Over the last 10 years, Los Angeles–based Michael Williams (born 1978) has created paintings known for their layered imagery, eye-popping color and use of airbrushing and inkjet printing. His large-scale works begin as drawings either on paper or on the computer screen before they are printed or transferred to canvas and then embellished with oil paint. Williams’ narrative content reveals a dark sense of humor about everyday life, often exploring the role of the painter as observer. Wickedly funny allegories merge with abstract painting as free-form amoebic shapes frequently fill the entirety of his canvases. The resulting paintings offer a dense and absorbing terrain of color and form. Michael Williams is published to accompany the artist’s first US solo museum exhibition, at Carnegie Museum of Art, where he presents a new body of his large-scale paintings as well as drawings that mix collage and free-associative mark-making.

Hack the Grid documents a series of large-scale light installations produced in Pittsburgh by New Mexico–based environmental artist Andrea Polli (born 1968), using the city’s long history of energy and industry to interrogate issues from particulate pollution to wind power.
