"The monster called my cell phone this morning, demanding money." So begins Jill Lundgrove, the unforgettable protagonist of Beaut. Secluded in a cheap apartment on a ring road of Des Moines after a fire has destroyed her house--a blaze "the Monster," her drug-addicted, adult son might have caused--she confronts her precarious circumstances. "I'm in great need of reckoning," she writes, partly to herself and to another initially unnamed. What of that fire, the Monster's criminal companions, and the surprising prospect of a love affair after years of widowhood? And what of her three other children, who have variously sought to protect her, flee her, dominate her? The haunting story that follow vividly illuminates the discordant accords of marriage and madness, the ambivalence in motherhood, and the mysteries of inheritance--and bestows a strange, unexpected gift on those closest to her.

From his early work as the first director of the Black Coalition of New Haven during the Civil Rights Movement to his tenure as president and CEO of the National Urban League, Hugh B. Price’s varied and highly successful career has been unwaveringly dedicated to social justice and racial equality. Price writes about growing up in a neighborhood near Howard University in Washington, attending a newly integrated high school, and studying at Amherst and Yale Law School. He also traces his forbearers, among them Nero Hawley, who fought at Valley Forge under George Washington; George and Rebecca Latimer, who escaped slavery by stowing away on a boat and traveling north as master and slave; and Lewis Latimer, who worked with Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.Price comes from a long line of radicals, and his own actions demanded change. He defended affirmative action, helped repair relations between the black and Jewish communities, and pressured the federal government to combat police brutality and racial profiling. “People who believe a problem can be solved tend to get busy solving it,” William Raspberry wrote in the Washington Post. “Hugh B. Price is a believer.” This African-American Life chronicles not only Price’s experiences and achievements, but also a lifetime of creating opportunities for others to succeed.

From her unique vantage point in New Orleans, Sybil Haydel Morial’s life spans one of the most critical periods in our country’s history. In this remarkable memoir, Morial chronicles her life as both witness to and catalyst for sweeping changes—desegregation, the end of Jim Crow, and the fight for voting rights. These changes transformed the nation during her lifetime. Morial’s story is welcome inspiration for the struggle for political empowerment that continues. As Ambassador Andrew Young, a childhood friend and later Sybil’s prom date, relates in his foreword: “It is doubtful that New Orleans could have produced two mayors with the dynamic, creative, and visionary leadership of 'Dutch' and Marc Morial without a wife and mother of Sybil’s loving strength, intelligence, and moral courage. But the life she lived in the crucible times and her perception of the civil rights movement in New Orleans goes far beyond that.”

Here is the good stuff: poetry written by women that actually excites the thinking reader. This anthology, spanning work of the last 75 years, will broaden its readers’ notions of what defines erotic poetry. For what is more intriguing, more satisfying than strong, self-assured writing? This groundbreaking anthology includes some of our most powerful women writers—among them Sharon Olds, Elizabeth Alexander, Anne Sexton, Dorianne Laux, Denise Levertov, Adrienne Rich, Lucille Clifton, and Louise Glück. These poets fully demonstrate that, far from being prurient, the erotic can permeate even the most mundane aspects of life, from reading a book to buying clothes. At the same time, the collection affirms the enormous meaningfulness of poetry—its ability to express the inexpressible and to illuminate the most private and intimate of human experiences. The poets included here represent different ethnicities, geographies, social classes, and sexual preferences. The only characteristic they share is that they are women writing about sex.

Number one in the series is Clarke’s Gold Indigoes. This lyric collection by the acclaimed Nova Scotian poet, playwright, and librettist traces the contours of relationship in lush yet startling francophilic tones.

Number two in the Carolina Wren Press poetry Chapbook series is Succory by Durham resident Andrea Selch. Politics gets personal in Selch’s debut, a volume spanning decades of memory and continents of care. Selch’s lifestyle is subtly explored in ten lyric poems and two longer sequences, humor and pain are doled out in equal heaping doses.

In 1920s Southern California, Lupita Camacho leaves Mexico and settles not far from the border—and so begins the journey of an American family told by a chain of tales stretching across three generations. Early stories track Lupita’s concessions to the demands of her new country and her new fish cannery job overseen by a lecherous boss who makes sure Lupita, her friend Rosa, and their Chinese coworkers work long, hard, and, for the most part, in silence, since speaking any language but English is forbidden. The family’s first-generation Americans populate later stories as they work toward assimilation, complete with kidney-shaped inground pools, even though their homes and children never quite match those in the pages of Ladies Home Journal. Finally, distanced from the culture of their ancestors and freed from the stigma of accented English, Lupita’s grandchildren live lives that are as wide-open as America: hosting karaoke nights, becoming female wrestlers, arriving at high school reunions utterly transformed. However, these modern-day family members discover that despite their freedom, they somehow remain set apart. In a time when the word “immigrant” has become politically charged and sometimes stripped of its earlier sense of dignity, these exquisitely human stories provide welcome restoration. In Hola and Goodbye, Donna Miscolta’s altogether fascinating and flawed characters face progress and failure against the backdrop of each new generation—bound together, and to us all, by the search for a place in this world.
