Renowned wilderness writer T H Watkins offers a portrait of remote areas of the fragile and beautiful canyonlands of Utah. He gives us a panorama of majestic mountains, buttes, and mesas; forest views of pinon an djuniper and tall mountains sage; and intimate glimpses of rivers weaving through red slits in the earth. Through Watkins's exquisite visual and literary images shines his deep commitment to saving treasured wildlands that were old when humankind was 'yet ungraced by the breath of creation'.

There is substantial evidence that the framers of the major documents and institutions of the American republic were influenced by the long-established democratic traditions of the Iroquois Confederacy. For many, however, this notion represents an attempt to deny American intellectual, cultural, and racial "credentials." A furious and often unseemly debate on this proposition has resulted. Bruce E. Johansen follows the controversy from its beginnings, providing highlights of the battle. Johansen notes that in the past few years academic opposition has largely grown quiet as the historical evidence has become known to a more general audience. The controversy, however, has been taken up by right-wing media, which have linked non-European "influence" to a multitude of ills besetting contemporary American society, from the rise in teenage pregnancies to the fall in Scholastic Aptitude Test scores.

What was the real significance of "war paint", of the rituals of shamans, of the mysterious communion with animals, plants, mountains, and wild waters? Looking beneath the surface of tribal communication, this book is the first to focus on the myriad forms of traditional expression that were the outward manifestation of a sophisticated ethical and spiritual ecology that existed for millennia before contact with European culture. Cooper describes practices of tribal cultures world-wide and examines the communication ethic of the Dine (Navajo) of northern Arizona and the Shuswap people of British Columbia. As this world of indigenous meaning opens to us, so does the possibility that these groups may have originated from higher -- not more "primitive" -- cultures. In an age when we find advertising deceptive, entertainment violent and meaningless, and politics laced with corruption, we can learn rules for living from the deeper, ethically grounded communication of Indigenous Peoples.

Paradoxically, contemporary horrors like ethnic cleansing are deeply rooted in humanity's highest aspirations, which have given rise to countless similar upheavals and atrocities perpetrated over millennia. Although the ideals embodied in religion and philosophy are considered to be humanity's prime "civilising" force, religions that preach love have been used to justify bloody massacres, and utopian ideals have fomented intolerance and persecution of those who were perceived as obstacles to the realisation of an ideal society. John Mohawk, a distinguished Native American historian, examines this paradox and traces the role of utopian thinking as the rationale for religious wars, subjugation of indigenous peoples, genocide, enslavement, plunder, economic domination, and campaigns of world conquest from the time of the ancient Greeks. Mohawk examines the hidden dynamic within utopian thinking and the danger it poses when it is adopted by powerful groups who use it to serve their own interests. He points out that the danger lies not in the utopian ideal itself but in the parallel assumption that its followers are in possession of the only "truth" and are therefore justified in forcing their "better way of life" on other cultures or nations for the ultimate good of humanity. In a gripping historical narrative, Mohawk traces the impact of utopian thinking on the rise of Western culture in ancient Greece and Rome, the emergence of the Christian empire, and the holy wars of the Middle Ages. Showing how this mindset has shaped Western development, he makes it clear that the utopian legacy still influences contemporary social and political movements at home and abroad. Our greatest challenge is to find ways to defuse its harmful effects on cultures different from our own, while preserving our aspirations and personal ideals. Mohawk argues that only a pluralistic outlook can truly support peace and understanding among the peoples of the world.
