This book was one of the principal resources used in the creation of the Lunar Exploration Scrapbook. This rare NASA template from 1967 investigates the details of the various advanced Apollo studies conducted by NASA in the late 1960's.

Rocket Science. Two words which are synonymous with complexity. Two words which for many people signify the zenith of human genius. A phrase which has entered the English lexicon to describe the toughest discipline in human endeavour. Author Alfred Zaehringer has a unique perspective on both the phrase and the discipline. In this book, his first about space in nearly forty years, Alfred Zaehringer uses his lifetime of experience to take the mystery out of the phrase he coined. Beginning with a short history of the birth of rocketry he moves into an explanation of the physics that makes it possible to use rockets to fly in space. Leaving no stone unturned he moves on to the politics and economics of space-flight before providing a detailed cross-section of man's different uses of the reaction rocket to fly into the heavens. Finally he looks at the proposals for future methods of space transportation and looks at the many promising new technologies which may offer cheaper access to space.

Book & CD-ROM. Forewords by Ron Howard (Director of 'Apollo 13') and Clint Howard (who played Sy in the movie). Includes CD-ROM: 4 Hours of tape loops from Apollos 13 and 15. Most of what we learn about NASA's space missions comes from statements carefully planned and massaged by managers and public relations people. With Apollo EECOM: Journey of a Lifetime we finally get an insider's view of how the Flight Controllers operated and just what they faced when events were crucial. This book is the life story of Sy Liebergot, former NASA Flight Controller, with emphasis on his years working in Mission Control. Following the disastrous tank explosion during the Apollo 13 mission, it was the Flight Controllers that made possible the safe return of the three endangered astronauts. Aboard Apollo 13, Lovell, Haise and Swigert performed wonders battling for their lives, but without the expertise, quick thinking and technical support of Mission Control, they never could have come home. Sy Liebergot was there and relates the details as they really happened. And Apollo 13 is just one of the many exciting stories he tells us. Truly an insider's view, this book discusses not just the events, but also the people that decided and enacted those events. These are the details that were never shown on anyone's TV screen; finally we get to learn what type of people the NASA Mission Controllers really were, and how they handled the demanding tasks that were theirs alone.

This is the first in-depth examination of U2's epochal fifth album, the record which catapulted the Irish band to the apex of the stadium rock world. The book documents the recording of the album itself, a process born of both triumph and tragedy. Detailed track breakdown is illuminated with quotes from group members, while a look into the world of record company promos unearths some of the rarest U2 records of all.

CD-ROM and Book. Man's on-going conquest of the solar system has been much publicised for its miraculous accomplishments. What is generally less publicised are the potential uses of space beyond simply landing men on another planet. 'Flags and foot-prints' is something we can all be proud of, but the true value of near-Earth space lies with the possibilities for manufacturing and colonisation. Processes not possible on Earth, because of atmosphere and gravity, can be employed in space to produce unique and highly desirable commodities. Habitats built in space, occupying the same orbit as the moon and made primarily from lunar raw materials, can be the necessary answer to our desperate, ever-increasing needs for living and agricultural areas. O'Neill is universally recognised as the father of the 'O'Neill colony' concept. Beginning in the 1970s, he took the original concepts and built from them a complete, realistic and attainable plan -- a plan to orbit permanent colonies at the L4 and L5 Lagrange points in near-Earth space, where everyday people would live, work and play in comfort and safety in an environmentally satisfying world. In this 3rd edition of The High Frontier, is O'Neill's original blueprint for the future, accompanied by new chapters presenting the up-to-date technologies and social considerations that impact upon and further justify the plan. This is a vision of a possible hopeful future that could already have come to pass if the human race had committed to it -- it is still a source of hope for the future.

CD-ROM and Book. On 18 May 1969 NASA launched the last in a series of daring test flights of the Apollo hardware. Apollo 10 would follow swiftly on the heels of the successful flight of Apollo 9. The goal was to send a second crew into deep space but this time with the fully equipped hardware that would be required for a lunar landing. Veteran astronauts Commander Tom Stafford and Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan were to fly tantalisingly close to the barren lunar surface -- a mere eight nautical miles, while Command Module Pilot John Young would be required to conduct the first rendezvous in lunar orbit to ensure the safe return of his crew mates. This book finally puts in one place four of the most important documents from this auspicious flight, The Apollo 10 Press Kit, The Apollo 10 Pre-Launch Mission Operation Report, The Apollo 10 Post Launch Mission Operation Report and The Apollo 10 Post Launch Mission Operation Report Supplement. For the interest of collectors, students or historians alike Apollo 10 -- The NASA Mission Reports follows the final test flight of Apollo through a series of astonishing technological accomplishments including the accurate measurement of distortions in the moon's gravitational field which would finally pave the way for man's first landing on another world. New to this edition: the Technical Debriefing. Includes 80 pages of new information.

The glorious space age has come and gone. So what now? What's next? To go further, to go faster, we must take the next step. Space is still full of mystery and challenges humankind as much as ever. Ideas on what the next step is, or steps are, vary greatly and there is no shortage of concepts for the future of space transportation. Concepts include new engines, new strategies, harnessing gravity, electromagnetism, nuclear energy and more. This book will take you on a guided visual tour of the future of space transportation. From Earth to Orbit to In-Space transportation, you will sample what is being considered and get an easy-to-understand explanation of what the spacecraft will do and how it will work. Decades ago Dr. Wernher von Braun teamed with Walt Disney to animate a mission to Mars and inspired a generation. Today multimedia, animation and video serve a similar communications need. The CD-ROM included contains official NASA videos, vehicle concept animation, and dynamic multimedia. View spacecraft concepts in 3D, see mission animation and hear first hand what the visionaries of the aerospace industry hope to accomplish.

Book & DVD. This next volume in the acclaimed NASA Mission Reports Series is packed full of never before seen materials. This book include the NASA Mission Reports for Apollo 17 as well as the NASA press releases from 1972 relating to the flight. The DVD in the back contains an exclusive video interview with Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the moon. Apollo 17 was the first time that a scientist was a member of the crew. Geologist/Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt stepped onto the Lunar surface along with Commander Eugene Cernan on the edge of the Sea of Serenity. Apollo 17 was the longest of the Apollo missions, it was also the heaviest payload and the longest Lunar stay. The lunar rover carried to the moon allowed the astronauts to travel further from their landing point than they ever had before. Also as part of this mission the moon was photographed from orbit in unprecedented detail. All of these amazing accomplishments are covered in this book. The DVD Bonus DVD features an exclusive interview with Apollo 17 Commander Eugene Cernan.

he concept for a reusable winged space vehicle has been a dream since the early 20th century. In 1981 the United States launched the first such vehicle, Columbia, and proved that winged spacecraft could work. Now, due to political pressure, the Orbiter fleet is slated to be decommissioned, but not before it fulfills its original mandateto build a permanent space station. This Pocket Space Guide, #10 in the series, details the exploits of the Space Shuttle fleet through triumph and tragedy, as it carried more than 300 people, 40 space laboratories and more than 60 satellites into space. From the first test flights to the détente missions to Russias Mir space station, thousands of facts can be found in this Space Shuttle Fact Archive. This updated edition of the Space Shuttle Fact archive includes every flight of the shuttle fleet, every mission, and every crew. "Will interest all fans of the Space Shuttle." satellite-evolution.com

On 4 October 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, inaugurating the Space Age. To the general public and many politicians in the West the small satellite racing overhead was a shocking and frightening display of communist technological advance. But in the back rooms of the Pentagon and the headquarters of the United States' Air Force, work had been underway since the end of World War II on the inevitability of space flight. The shock of Sputnik created an opportunity to bring this work into the light of day. During the 12 months between October 1957 and September 1958 engineers, doctors and a host of Air Force Colonels and Generals began a concerted effort to persuade President Eisenhower to allow them to take control of the United States' future space efforts, and to place humans into space no later than 1960 and then send them to the surface of the moon by 1964. In February 1958, without going through the usual gauntlet of hearings the Air Force brass were informed that they were in charge of the country's space program. Emboldened by this unexpected surprise a team of more than 60 Air Force staff quickly put together a long-range plan for the exploration of space. This new plan included the evolution of Air Force missiles from the Thor, through the Titan, to the Super-Titan and ultimately to the 2,200,000 lb thrust "Big B" booster. The proposed spacecraft carried acronym names like MISS, MISSOPH, LUREC and finally LUMAN, for the manned lunar lander. This book includes the official Air Force history of these events, for many years classified as "SECRET". It explains how many of these ideas ended up being adopted by NASA and led to the Space Race of the 1960s. Included with this book is a CD-ROM featuring documents from the early USAF plans for a moon landing.

In the first two months of 1958 President Eisenhower ordered the creation of a new department at the Pentagon, the Advanced Research Projects Agency, or ARPA. One of the first tasks appointed to ARPA was to choose which branch of the military would handle the countrys space program. Almost arbitrarily ARPA chose the Air Force. This decision stood for just a few months before the President announced the formation of NASA, but it became clear to the heads of the U.S. Army that they were running second in a two-horse race. The Pentagon would only be allowed into space if they could persuade the President that there was a military need to be there. Almost immediately the Air Force and the Army produced their rival visions for operating off-world. The Army team led by Generals Medaris and Trudeau turned to Wernher von Braun whose team presented a long-term plan based around their new one-million pound rocket the Juno V; but the Air Force went all-out and showed its plans for strategic domination by building a moon base. In March 1959 the Army responded with its own vision for a moon base which they called Project Horizon. The plan was conceived and presented to the President in June 1959 and was immediately recognised as a useful beginning for a civilian moon base, and so the report was reduced from 800 pages to 400 pages and given to NASA. Now, exactly sixty years later, three of the four volumes of the original military report are available here. Volume III still remains classified as SECRET. Reproduced from the actual copy of Horizon which was used to create the edited Civilian version. This version includes the original colour graphics. Bonus: In 1966 the Army was still working on its plans for space combat and some of those plans are included here as a bonus to Project Horizon.

In the Spring of 1961 President John Kennedy challenged his country to place humans on the moon and return them to Earth by the end of the decade. It seemed an audacious proposal to outside observers, but also to the heads of the two-year old National Aeronautics and Space Agency. What had been lost in the political cloud and excitement surrounding the President's challenge was the fact that there were people in the aerospace community, outside of NASA, who were sure that a manned mission to the moon was possible within ten years, and they had known this since at least 1958, when NASA didn't even exist. These enthusiastic advocates included the German rocket scientists working for the Army under Wernher von Braun; a team of military engineers working for the U.S. Air Force under General Bernard Schriever; and a team of engineers working under Conrad Lau at the Vought Aircraft Astronautics Division whose efforts remained largely unknown. Between the Spring of 1958 and Christmas 1959 Lau and his team worked out the most effective way to get to the moon using the advanced rockets being proposed by von Braun's team. Following a visit by their ebullient congressman, Olin Teague, Vought's manager John Clark sent Lau's report to Abe Silverstein, head of manned space flight at NASA. Less than a month later Silverstein ordered his advanced design leader, Robert Piland, to essentially work from Lau's ideas to create a modular spacecraft system for Apollo. It would be two years later that NASA would then adopt the method resurrected by Lau to leave the main spacecraft in lunar orbit to save fuel. Only ten copies of this report were distributed -- until now. Project MALLAR is the 100th book in the acclaimed Apogee Books' Space Series.

Apollo Memories is the personal memoir of Dr W. David Carrier, one of the scientists who prepared the Apollo astronauts to do science on another world. Dr. Carrier was responsible for the development and performance of lunar soil experiments in support of the Apollo program at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. His activities included astronaut training, design of lunar surface experiments, and laboratory testing of returned lunar soil. It was Dr. Carrier who told Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin how deep they were going to sink into the lunar surface. He was a member of the science support team in Mission Control and a member of the Lunar Sample Preliminary Examination Team in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory during each of the Apollo missions. In Apollo Memories, using his own words and some of the most famous photographs ever taken, Dr. Carrier takes the reader back to the heady days of the first manned lunar explorations and puts the science into context. Although 400,000 people worked on the Apollo program only a select few were given the opportunity to directly work with the astronauts to prepare them for mankinds greatest adventure. Dr. Carrier earned that opportunity. Includes dozens of photographs of Dr Carrier's work on Apollo as well as some of the most famous images in history (in colour and some anaglyphs) explained by the man who asked them to be taken. (Book comes with red/blue glasses)

This multi-faceted volume provides exquisite detail and unique looks of the Moon as seen through the Apollo J missions the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 Moon landing sojourns designed for longer stays on Earths celestial neighbour, including the first-time humans drove a rover across the lunar surface. As a sequel to his book Apollo on the Moon in Perspective, author Ron Wells uses cutting-edge photogrammetry techniques, providing the reader astounding views of some of the most distinctive features of the Moon seen from angles never before possible. This book includes a multitude of 3D anaglyphs created painstakingly by the author including features from the lunar far side. 3D anaglyph glasses are provided. This glossy book also includes a revealing DVD that includes flybys over many of the lunar features derived from 3D models. There are digital terrain model flybys of 40 lunar locations and a brand-new unique movie. It is narrated by Apollo 17s Harrison Schmitt, describing his flight over the Taurus Littrow valley, the site where he would spend three days as the only scientist to walk on the Moon. This extraordinary volume is dedicated to the unsung heroes of the Apollo lunar landing missions, the Command Module Pilots: Mike Collins, Dick Gordon, Stu Roosa, Al Worden, Ken Mattingly and Ron Evans. While their colleagues were exploring the lunar surface, they maintained their lone vigils in orbit, making scientific observations and imaging the Moon in unprecedented detail while waiting for the moonwalkers to return. As Schmitt writes in the books foreword, underscoring the tenacity of Wells to produce this matchless work, the volume represents the latest culmination of his never-ending search for new knowledge and the means to draw you into that quest with him. Working with him on the last chapter of this book, Colors Across the Moon, was both a pleasure and a stimulation of new thoughts about volcanism on the Moon as well as about the evolution of that small planet.
