Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born on the 1st April 1875 in Greenwich, London. Leaving school at 12 because of truancy, by the age of fifteen he had experience; selling newspapers, as a worker in a rubber factory, as a shoe shop assistant, as a milk delivery boy and as a ship’s cook. By 1894 he was engaged but broke it off to join the Infantry being posted to South Africa. He also changed his name to Edgar Wallace which he took from Lew Wallace, the author of Ben-Hur. In Cape Town in 1898 he met Rudyard Kipling and was inspired to begin writing. His first collection of ballads, The Mission that Failed! was enough of a success that in 1899 he paid his way out of the armed forces in order to turn to writing full time. By 1904 he had completed his first thriller, The Four Just Men. Since nobody would publish it he resorted to setting up his own publishing company which he called Tallis Press. In 1911 his Congolese stories were published in a collection called Sanders of the River, which became a bestseller. He also started his own racing papers, Bibury’s and R. E. Walton’s Weekly, eventually buying his own racehorses and losing thousands gambling. A life of exceptionally high income was also mirrored with exceptionally large spending and debts. Wallace now began to take his career as a fiction writer more seriously, signing with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921. He was marketed as the ‘King of Thrillers’ and they gave him the trademark image of a trilby, a cigarette holder and a yellow Rolls Royce. He was truly prolific, capable not only of producing a 70,000 word novel in three days but of doing three novels in a row in such a manner. It was in, estimating that by 1928 one in four books being read was written by Wallace, for alongside his famous thrillers he wrote variously in other genres, including science fiction, non-fiction accounts of WWI which amounted to ten volumes and screen plays. Eventually he would reach the remarkable total of 170 novels, 18 stage plays and 957 short stories. Wallace became chairman of the Press Club which to this day holds an annual Edgar Wallace Award, rewarding ‘excellence in writing’. Diagnosed with diabetes his health deteriorated and he soon entered a coma and died of his condition and double pneumonia on the 7th of February 1932 in North Maple Drive, Beverly Hills. He was buried near his home in England at Chalklands, Bourne End, in Buckinghamshire.

If ever a writer needed an introduction Arthur Conan Doyle would not be considered that man. After all, Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the foremost literary detective of any age. Add to this canon his stories of science fiction and horror, his historical novels, his political campaigning, his efforts in establishing a Court Of Appeal, his poetical works and there is little room for anything else. Except he was also a dedicated and voluminous historian writing much about the wars in Southern Africa and the First World War. His analysis and description of events is to be admired and his style is welcoming even though he relays events of great carnage and tragedy. Here we publish volume 1 of his history of the Great War.

Coningsby Dawson was born in 1883 at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, England. Coningsby was to graduate from Merton College, Oxford in 1905. He took a theological course for a year but decided his life was to be that of a writer. He travelled to America and worked for various newspapers usually on all things Canadian. His early works were poems and novels including: Garden Without Walls (1913), which was an immediate success, followed by The Raft and Slaves of Freedom. In 1914, he went to Ottawa, and was offered, if he completed his military training, a commission in the Canadian Field Artillery. In July 1916 he was dispatched for service in France. He served till the War’s end but was wounded twice. After the War he studied reconstruction problems in Europe on which he then lectured in the States. At the request of President Hoover he reported on the devastated regions of Central and Eastern Europe. He continued to write, though at a lesser pace than before. Coningsby Dawson died in 1959.

R. Derby Holmes was an American serving as a corporal of the 22nd London Battalion of the queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. As he writes in his foreword “I have tried as an American in writing this book to give the public a complete view of the trenches and life on the Western Front as it appeared to me, and also my impression of conditions and men as I found them. It has been a pleasure to write it, and now that I have finished I am genuinely sorry that I cannot go further. On the lecture tour I find that people ask me questions, and I have tried in this book to give in detail many things about the quieter side of war that to an audience would seem too tame. I feel that the public want to know how the soldiers live when not in the trenches, for all the time out there is not spent in killing and carnage. As in the case of all men in the trenches, I heard things and stories that especially impressed me, so I have written them as hearsay, not taking to myself credit as their originator. I trust that the reader will find as much joy in the cockney character as I did and which I have tried to show the public; let me say now that no finer body of men than those Bermondsey boys of my battalion could be found.

John Gallishaw was born in St Johns, Newfoundland in Canada in 1891. Educated at Harvard he was 23 when the Great War broke out. He returned home to join the Canadian army in Halifax. He was assigned to the Cyclist Corps of the Second Division, Canadian Expeditionary Force but in March, 1915, he asked for and received a discharge. On April 3 he enlisted in the First Newfoundland regiment which was about to cross the Atlantic and join up with the British army. Most soldiers in the regiment were transferred to Aldershot before being sent on to Malta. Just before dispatch he complained to an adjutant who assigned him to B company of the regiment. He took part in the evacuation of Gallipoli where he was wounded and eventually he was demobilised. He returned to Harvard as a lecturer but in 1917 with the United States entering the war he enlisted again, this time in the American army. In France he took part in several battles and became a commander of a battalion then joined the United States American Army Intelligence Service and served as a liaison officer with the British forces. After the war he continued to write as well as establish the John Gallishaw School of Creative Writing in Cambridge. He wrote for radio, theatre and television as well as in Hollywood for many of the major studios. John Gallishaw died in 1968

Procopius of Caesarea was born in approximately 500. He is generally considered to be the last major historian of the ancient world. His works have given us a unique and intimate account both of the Roman Military and its Emperor Justinian. A native of Caesarea in Palaestina Prima little else is known of his early life, and apart from assuming that he would have received a classical Greek Education the rest is deduction rather than based on known facts. In 527, the first year of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I''s reign, he became the adsessor (legal adviser) for Belisarius, Justinian''s chief military commander who was then starting out on what would become a brilliant military career, initially in the East of the Empire. After early successes Belisarius was defeated in 531 at the Battle of Callinicum and recalled to the Empire’s heart in Constantinople. Justinian was without doubt clever but cruel. When part of Constantinople rose against him in the Nika riots of January, 532, he sent Belisarius and his fellow general Mundo to repress them in a savage massacre in the Hippodrome – witnessed by Procopius. The following year Procopius accompanied Belisarius on his victorious expedition against the Vandal kingdom in North Africa and took part in the capture of Carthage. Procopius remained in Northern Africa with Belisarius'' successor, Solomon the Eunuch, when Belisarius returned to Constantinople. Procopius rejoined Belisarius for his campaign against the Ostrogothic kingdom in Italy and was there for the Gothic siege of Rome that lasted a year and nine days and ended in March, 538. He witnessed Belisarius'' entry into the Gothic capital, Ravenna, in 540. However at some point in the next few years Procopius seems to have been moved away from working with Belisarius. When the latter was sent back to Italy in 544 to cope with a further outbreak of the war with the Goths, Procopius appears to have no longer been with Belisarius'' staff. Procopius continued to record history and his works are both insightful and clear headed, distilling the complexities of the times into several classic books. His death is thought to have been around 560.
