Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
Performing and visual artist Ben Patterson (born 1934) was a founding member of Fluxus' participatory, do-it-yourself, anticommercialist avant-garde network. While many Fluxus artists, influenced by John Cage's precedent, employed conceptual techniques borrowed from music (e.g., the event score), Patterson's fusion of art and music was informed by his background as a classically trained double-bassist. His "Variations for Double Bass" (1960), for example, was played with the titular instrument balanced upside down on its scroll. Published for a retrospective at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, this volume includes an anthology of Patterson's scores, edited by Fluxus scholar Jon Hendricks; a chronology of the artist's life and work; a CD compilation of his musical performances from 1961 to 2009, produced by Alga Marghen; and essays by a variety of scholars, assessing the career of one of Fluxus' foremost and wittiest artists.

In 1914, Marcel Duchamp purchased a bottle rack, called it a sculpture, put his name to it and the “readymade” artwork was born. It Is What It Is. Or Is It? considers the legacy of the readymade in contemporary artistic practice as the form approaches its 100th anniversary and attempts to recuperate the radicality of Duchamp’s foundational gesture. Taking stock of the readymade’s simple materiality and its economy of means, this catalogue includes work by 18 artists working in a variety of media from sculpture to photography, painting, video and installation-based works. It Is What It Is. Or Is It? includes works by Ellen Altfest, Fayçal Baghriche, Bill Bollinger, William Cordova, Latifa Echakhch, Daphne Fitzpatrick, Claire Fontaine, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Rachel Hecker, Jamie Isenstein, Luis Jacob, Patrick Killoran, Jirí Kovanda, Klara Lidén, Catherine Murphy and Pratchaya Phinthong.

A Fiction of Authenticity presents seminal moments for challenging prevailing notions about interculturalism and postcolonial subjects. This full-color catalogue features specially commissioned work by 11 contemporary artists of African descent--each of whom lives and works in either the United States or Europe and examines the invented idea of an “authentic” Africa. Each of these artists has positioned themselves outside the frame of Africa, but each remains connected, and by doing so has created a shift in the way the world considers postmodern and postcolonial art production. The participating artists are Siemon Allen, Fatma Charfi, Godfried Donkor, Mary Evans, Meschac Gaba, Kendell Geers, Moshekwa Langa, Ingrid Mwangi, Odili Donald Odita, Owusu-Ankomah and Zineb Sedira. Also included are seven new essays by some of the most exciting and critical voices working internationally today. A Fiction of Authenticity considers the diasporic positioning of these artists, as well as paradigms of discourse concerned with aesthetics, nationhood, citizenship, community, locality and sense of place.

Borrowing its title from Greil Marcus' 1997 book The Old, Weird America: The World of Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes, this publication is produced in conjunction with an exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, which considers the work of 16 artists who explore American folk imagery and history from the time of European settlement to the 1960s. Dylan, Marcus argues, was influential because he explored an older, half-forgotten world of American legend that seemed at once stranger and more telling than anything found in the mainstream. The artists featured in this volume, all of whom came to prominence in the last decade, include Jeremy Blake, Sam Durant, Barnaby Furnas, Brad Kahlhamer, Margaret Kilgallen, Dario Robleto, Allison Smith and Kara Walker, among others. As a group, they draw on folklore for its ability to illuminate American cultural life in its strange mixture of civilization and barbarism, enlightenment and madness.

John Wood (born 1969) and Paul Harrison (born 1966) fuse their aesthetic research with existential slapstick comedy. Working together since 1993, the British duo use a wide variety of props, including furniture, household utensils and their own bodies, setting up comical interactions with objects that they record in austere video works. Describing themselves as performance artists and sculptors whose audience is the video camera, Wood and Harrison are heirs to silent film comics Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and to uniquely British comedy troupes like Monty Python. Through their efforts, no matter how absurd, Sisyphean or masochistic, Wood and Harrison reveal the potential for inventive play in all scenarios. Grounded in the joys and pratfalls of the everyday, Wood and Harrison's blend of high and low, philosophical and funny, captures both a sense of wonder and the thrill of genuine experimentation.

Described by The New York Times as a “painter and punk propagandist,” Flood has, despite remaining barely visible at the museum level, maintained an active and influential career for decades in painting and, increasingly, exhibition practice, producing work characterized by deep wisdom and trenchant humor. With Gratest Hits, Flood--an artist so absolute in his judgments that one 2012 painting featured the words “Whore Museums, Gutless Collectors, Blind Dealers, So-Called Artists” emblazoned on it--finally gets the monographic museum treatment in his hometown, and a career-spanning catalogue to boot. This fully illustrated, full-color volume features texts by Carlo McCormick, Alison Gingeras, El Topito, Scott Indrisek and Bill Arning, the exhibition’s curator and director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.

Celebrating hip hop legend DJ ScrewThis book documents a two-part exhibition on the legacy of the late Houston legend DJ Screw (1971-2000), best known as the creator of the now-famous “chopped and screwed” DJ technique, the leader of Houston's Screwed Up Click and an influential figure in the Houston hip hop community.DJ Screw distorted songs by musical artists, creating “chopped and screwed” versions of the original by slowing tempo, reducing pitch, chopping lyrics and layering freestyles by Houston-based rappers. Known for his signature stretched sound, he also displayed deft skill evident in his transitions, sampling choices and beat juggling.Slowed and Throwed: Records of the City through Mutated Lenses explores visual arts practices that parallel the musical methods of the innovative DJ. It features unconventional photography and new media works by artists with personal ties to Houston, including B. Anele, Rabéa Ballin, Tay Butler, Jimmy Castillo, Jamal Cyrus, Ben DeSoto, DJ Screw, Robert Hodge, Shana Hoehn, Tomashi Jackson, Ann Johnson, Devin Kenny, Liss LaFleur, El Franco Lee II, Karen Navarro, Kristin Massa, Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud, Sondra Perry and Charisse Pearlina Weston.
