DiMaggio's baseball career began in 1932 when he filled in at shortstop at midseason for a minor league team. In 1934 he became the property of the New York Yankees, which marked the beginning of his road toward greatness in the nation's most famous city on one of the most hallowed fields in the sport. Off the field, his life was marked by a famous marriage to and divorce from Marilyn Monroe, a late-1960s popular song, and a somewhat unhappy retirement.
On baseball's one hundredth anniversary in 1969, he was voted the greatest living player of the game, and the Yankees erected a plaque to him among the memorials to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. On March 8, 1999, at the age of eighty-four, DiMaggio died after a five-month battle with cancer.
In I Remember Joe DiMaggio, dozens of the great ballplayer's contemporaries, teammates, coaches, fans, friends, and relatives recall their favorite memories and anecdotes of this man who became an icon of America. It is a warm, entertaining, and inspiring book about a man whose fame has been the stuff of legend for more than half a century.

On July 17, 1981, Coach Bryant sat in his office at Memorial Coliseum reminiscing with sports columnist Al Browning of the Tuscaloosa News. Contemplating the twilight of his career, he calmly said, ""They'll forget me as soon as I croak and am buried"". When Browning objected, Coach smiled slightly and said, ""No, that's the way it is. Life moves on, and people find interest in other things"".
While Bryant's memory may have faded slightly, he certainly has not been forgotten, and I Remember Paul ""Bear"" Bryant is a glowing testimony to the love that those who knew him best continue to have for him to this day. Here dozens of his contemporaries, former players, childhood friends, family, competitors, opponents, and his ""boys"" offer in their own words their favorite memories of this man they loved so much. They recall ordinary moments as well as extraordinary ones; they recall moments of joyful victory and bitter defeat; they recall memories of the gridiron discipline he dished out and the thoughtful, helpful guidance he offered to his players, even long after they had graduated and gone on to their own careers.
While Bryant has moved on from this life, he has not been forgotten, and the personal memories included in IRemember Paul ""Bear"" Bryant proves it beyond doubt.

For many of those who are even familiar with his name, George Whitefield is thought of as a preacher, a man connected with the Great Awakening in the 1700s. While this is true, it is only part of the story. As a student at Oxford University, he experienced a spiritual awakening under the influence of John Wesley's Methodists and immediately began tending to prisoners, caring for the poor, and preaching the Christian gospel. He met with astounding success, in time speaking to larger crowds than had ever gathered in the history of England. Whitefield became the most famous man of his age.
His impact upon the American colonies, however, may have been his most lasting gift. In seven tours of the colonies, Whitfield preached from Georgia to Maine, calling the colonists to spiritual conversion and challenging them in their sense of national destiny. He befriended men like Benjamin Franklin, converted men like Patrick Henry, and inspired men like George Washington. Furthermore, when he learned that England intended to tighten her control over the colonies, Whitefield warmed his American friends in sermon after sermon and even accompanied Benjamin Franklin to make the American case in the Court of Saint James. Many of the colonists considered him the father of their revolution.
Forgotten Founding Father captures the early struggles and international successes of this amazing leader. The result is a portrait of a gifted but flawed human who yielded himself as a tool in the hands of a sovereign God. Also portrayed is how important Whitfield was to the American cause and how much Americans today owe to him -- a story that will inspire a new generation with a past vividly and truthfully retold.

Love 'em or hate 'em, there's no denying that the New York Yankees have won twenty-six world championships. No other team comes close to matching that record. Some clubs are fortunate enough to assemble a team that can be called a dynasty, most never come close - the Yankees have had five.
Long before the 2000 World Series trophy was awarded, Alan Ross, a lifelong Yankees fan, began compiling a unique, concise treasury of quotations about the Yankees by the players, coaches, and sportswriters who called Yankee Stadium home. The result is an eloquent collection of pinstripe pride that should swell the heart of every Yankees fan. Sentiments from heroes past and present echo through the pages, from Ruth and Gehrig to Stengel and Mantle to Torre and Jeter. Not only are the voices heard of the greats whose names appear on the monuments beyond the left-center field fence at Yankee Stadium - Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, DiMaggio, Mantle, Maris, Berra, Ford, Munson, Guidry, Jackson, Hunter, and Mattingly - but also those of other Yankee heroes such as Charley Keller, Spud Chandler, Joe Gordon, Tommy Henrich, Vic Raschi, Allie Reynolds, Bobby Murcer, Bobby Richardson, Tony Kubek, Joe Pepitone, and Sparky Lyle.
This tribute to the Yankees also includes a brief history of the team, statistics from the successful World Series campaigns, and the lineups that amassed this legacy. In the end, it is a celebration of the greatness of the Yankees that spanned a century.
This is the kind of book a fan reads over and over. After all, that is the way their Yankees seem to collect world championships.

Since that day the Tennessee-Alabama game has developed into one of the premier football rivalries in the nation. To many of the faithful, it is much more than a game -- it is a crusade. The intensity with which these games have been waged makes victory as satisfying as the warm crimson and orange leaves that dance in Knoxville's cool Smoky Mountain breezes. Defeat, however, is more bitter than the choking smoke of Birmingham's steel mills.
Beginning in 1928, the annual game has been played on the third Saturday in October, and the contest has produced enough heroes to fill several books. Third Saturday in October tells the story of each game. From Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Red"" Drew, Paul ""Bear"" Bryant, Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, and Mike Dubose of Alabama, to Robert Neyland, Bowden Wyatt, Doug Dickey, Bill Battle, Johnny Majors, and Phil Fulmer of Tennessee, the game has been directed by legendary coaches and played by heroic young men who have risen to greatness on the third Saturday in October.
Third Saturday in October is filled with memories and reflections of players, coaches, reporters, sportscasters, and fans. The people who were there, who made or failed to make the key plays, tell what happened in their own words. More than two hundred historic photographs illustrate the lively text. This second edition contains reports of the games from 1987 through 2000.

While that Cinderella story was Valvano's only national championship, he quickly came to symbolize the exuberance and excellence of the exciting world of college basketball. Valvano transcended his sport, touching millions as he emerged as one of the most charismatic and, ultimately, courageous figures in American life who touched millions.
Diagnosed with bone cancer, he joined ESPN to comment on college basketball games. Later he received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at ESPN's first ESPY Awards, where he announced that he was starting the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Shortly after receiving the award, he died at the age of forty-seven. In I Remember Jim Valvano, he is remembered by former players, fellow coaches, a variety of other basketball experts, close associates, and many others as one of college basketball's great movers and shakers, a man with a heart as big as his popularity. Valvano's life is the classic story of courage and determination as borne out in his memorable line: Don't give up. Don't ever give up"".

These various (and often exotic) animals have enjoyed the special privileges of living in the nation's capital, giving them access to the scenes of power. So when something goes awry in the White House, who better to solve it than these pet detectives?
Did Rex, Ronald Reagan's King Charles spaniel, play a role in uncovering Irangate? What mystery did Franklin Roosevelt's Scottish terrier, Fala, uncover when left on the Aleutian Islands? How would some of the more unusual pets, such as John Quincy Adams's pet alligator or Calvin Coolidge's hippopotamus, search for clues in the halls of the Executive Mansion?

Bud Wilkinson was one of America's greatest football coaches. His incredible achievements at the helm of the Oklahoma Sooners set a new benchmark for all college football coaches. During his seventeen years as the Sooners’ head coach, Wilkinson amassed a stellar 145-29-4 record that included winning streaks of 31 and 47 games, three national titles, four undefeated seasons, and thirteen consecutive conference championships. His career .826 winning percentage surpassed that of other coaching legends of the era, including Woody Hayes and Paul "Bear" Bryant.
But it wasn’t just the victories and titles that distinguished Wilkinson. The handsome and debonair former star quarterback was well-liked by colleagues, players, and football fans throughout the nation. In addition to his career as a college coach, he worked as a network-television commentator in the sixties and seventies, served as head of the President’s Council on Youth Fitness, made a foray into politics, and briefly returned to coaching in the late seventies with the Saint Louis Cardinals of the National Football League.
I Remember Bud Wilkinson offers hundreds of anecdotes and memories of Wilkinson by dozens of people who knew him well, including former players, fellow coaches, television personalities, friends, and many others. These recollections go into the locker room, between the white lines, and behind the scenes to explore and explain what made the multitalented Wilkinson a legend in his own time and beyond.

Roy is a good husband, Penny reminds herself, but he can pinch a nickel until Thomas Jefferson hollers "Uncle!" A hard, dominating man, he bristles when Penny offers to roll the coins—no wife of his needs to waste time rolling mere pennies.
Penny has never kept a secret from her husband, but as her hoard of castaway change grows, she discovers that having money of her own gives her the power to make her own decisions. Beginning with something as small as a furtive trip to a fast-food restaurant in a Georgia town, she finds that small change can eventually lead to big changes.
Thirty-four years later, Roy finds a check for $1,500 drawn on an account bearing only Penny's name. He is bewildered, wondering how his wife, who has never worked outside their home in her entire life, managed to come by so much money. His quest to unravel this mystery leads him to other discoveries about the woman he thought he knew so well. Roy learns just how many lives Penny has touched and just how well his wife had known his secrets all those years—and her example shows him how to begin life anew.
Small Change is a deceptively simple story that explores the human condition in a rich emotional portrait. A remarkable tale of an ordinary housewife who leaves an extraordinary legacy, it reminds us of the true spirit of charity, the effects of poverty, and the tragic self-silencing that limits the richness of far too many women's lives.

BASEBALL LEGEND—AMERICAN HERO
Years after being banned from Major League Baseball “for life” because of alleged sports gambling, Pete Rose continues to be a colorful and controversial newsmaker. His frequent appeals to Commissioner Bud Selig for reinstatement have had the overwhelming support of fans, reflecting the enthusiasm Rose brought to the game and the passion he has generated over the years.
Rose played twenty-four seasons before retiring in 1986 with numerous records; most career hits (4,256), most games played (3,562), most at-bats (14,053), most seasons with 200 or more hits (10), and most winning games played in (1,972). During a career with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos, Rose was the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 1963 and its Most Valuable Player in 1973. In addition to winning three batting titles and two Gold Glove Awards, he also was the World Series MVP with Cincinnati’s “Big Red Machine” team that won the 1975 world championship.
In Pete Rose: Baseball’s Charlie Hustle, dozens of the people who know him best—teammates, opposing players, friends, fans, hometown acquaintances, and baseball experts—share their memories of the man and the player.
