DUB, The Sound of Surprise is a detailed chronicle and fascinating guide to the captivating history of Jamaican dub music, the first of its kind. This archetype of the remix style grew out of reggae in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The book presents over 200 illustrations and some rare album covers, and describes the origins and development of a unique technique created in Jamaican recording studios which would change the world of music production forever. Author Helmut Philipps has visited the places dub happened, and met its pioneers, inventors, and key figures.

The second volume explains the basic principles of the opening, discusses how to build an opening repertoire and produce opening novelties, and explores the connection between the opening and the later stages -- the middlegame and the endgame.

To achieve success in chess, a little talent is required, but it is even more important to have a thorough grounding in the different aspects of the game. This volume, which has sold well over a hundred thousand copies in its German edition, proceeds from the simple to the difficult, from checkmating with a couple of pieces to strategic planning. It has been used in numerous adult education classes, and is also highly suitable for private study. Rudolf Teschner is an Honorary FIDE International Grandmaster and a popular chess author, who for 38 years was editor of the magazine "Deutsche Schachzeitung".

Victor Korchnoi is one of the greatest figures in chess history, which he has helped to shape for nearly 50 years now. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, the aggressive style of the now over 70-year-old is undiminished and as awe-inspiring as ever. At tournaments with numerous entrants, the naturalised Swiss citizen leaves world-class players young enough to be his grandchildren far behind him. It is high time, therefore, to update Viktor Kortshnoi's autobiography "Chess is my life", which met with great interest on its publication more than 20 years ago. In long interviews, Victor Korchnoi has completely retold his life story. The memories of his childhood in the besieged Leningrad, his time as a student of the university of his home town (now Saint Petersburg), his rise to the top of the major chess power USSR and the years before and after his defection to the West in 1976 are also of significance as contemporary documents of a life spent in the former Soviet Union. The volume also includes many photographs as well as a number of games with comments in typical Korchnoi-style and which are of decisive importance for his brilliant chess career.

This third volume in Mark Dvoretsky's course is devoted to questions of strategy, and is aimed at improving the reader's positional understanding. The author also examines a number of positions that lie on the boundary between the middlegame and endgame. As in the other books of the series, he uses examples from his own games and those of his pupils, together with original analyses of episodes from other player's games. "My books may or may not be liked, but it is unlikely that they could have been any different. I demonstrate examples that are memorable to me in the way that I myself see them, and I describe the chess and psychological mechanisms in the same way that I explain them in lessons to my pupils. I am sure that an attempt to deliberately correct, and artificially simplify the material would have led to a significant lowering of its quality, and a distortion of the chess patterns generated in the mind of the author, and, I hope, subsequently also in the mind of the reader ..." -- Mark Dvoretsky

"Compared with the other books in this series, substantially more space is given to the analysis of the opening problems that confront a player in a particular game. The first half of the book is altogether devoted to opening preparation (although, as you will see, not only to this), and also in the second half nearly every game is accompanied by detailed opening information. The main attraction of chess is its thematic content. I hope that this book, like the preceding ones, will provide a guide for you through the rich and diverse world of chess ideas, will help you to perceive the depth and beauty of schemes generated at the board, in tournament or match play, to disclose the causes of mistakes and to be aware of the hidden forces that determine the plans of chess encounters. As a result you will significantly improve your understanding of chess, and your practical playing strength will rise." -- Mark Dvoretsky

When Mikhail Botvinnik lost the world championship in 1960 to the dazzling attacking player from Riga, Mikhail Tal, there seemed little chance of him regaining his title. Yet in the Return Match a year later, with a surprising demonstration of aggressive chess, Botvinnik completely outplayed his young opponent and ran out the easy winner. All 21 games of the match are deeply annotated.

The Leningrad System is one of the sharpest and most interesting replies to 1 d4, and since this typical set-up is also playable against the flank openings 1 c4 and 1 If3, it provides the Black player with a genuine universal weapon. A repertoire for Black based on 7... Ee8 in the main line of the Leningrad System is presented here, but since the typical motifs and ideas for both sides are fully explained. White players too will benefit from a study of the book.

The well-known grandmaster and theoretician Evgeny Sveshnikov has used the Closed Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5) more than 150 times in tournament play with a score of more than 70%. Many theoretically important games have been excluded by the author from official' chess databases, and here they are exclusively published for the first time. Volume 1 (Basic Course) contains the following main chapters: Historical Overview of the Closed Variation; Plans for White and Black on the Basis of Thoroughly Annotated Games; A Lesson on the Blockade; 70 Test Positions: What Would You Play?

Text in English, German & Spanish. Octavio Ocampo is one of Mexicos most prolific artists. Octavio was born on 28 February 1943 in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. He grew up in a family of designers, and studied art from early childhood. Ruth Rivera, daughter of artist and muralist Diego Rivera, and Maria Luisa Mendoza encouraged him to attend the School of Painting and Sculpture of the National Fine Art Institute. The talents of Octavio Ocampo are not limited to painting and sculpture, but also extended to acting and dancing. At the Art Institute of San Francisco, he studied all these disciplines and pursued both a film and theatre career. In 1976, he began to devote himself solely to painting and sculpture. He now works primarily in the metamorphic style -- using a technique of superimposing and juxtaposing realistic and figurative details within the images that he creates. Ocampo is known for several works in his sometimes wryly sardonic, sometimes evocative paintings in which detailed images are intricately woven together to create larger images -- the optical illusions fading back and stepping forward as you study the pieces, notice the details, and finally recognise the large scale intention. This is what Octavio Ocampo terms his "metamorphic" style. The Visions Fine Art Gallery in Sedona, Arizona represents Octavio Ocampo in the United States. Several collections in Mexico contain his work, and individual works of his have been commissioned for former President Jimmy Carter, Jane Fonda, Cher and others.

"For a long time I used to go to bed early": possibly the most famous opening line in the French language and the first words of a masterly work whose author himself would even compare to a cathedral. In Search of Lost Time, the work of a man: Marcel Proust, the man of the work. Never before had a writer taken introspection and the workings of memory to such a level, and in the course of this prodigious quest brought a quasi-mystical aura to the taste of the humble Madeleine for generations of readers around the world. A work of keys, famously obscure -- that famous Proustian phrase -- and yet overflowing with fantasies, "In Search of Lost Time" gives us an invitation to penetrate the mysteries and secrets of its author. He is often described as a nervous, painfully shy individual, hiding away in his cork-lined bedroom; but between his fantasies and his real life experiences, who was the real Marcel Proust? And what can we learn from the famous Questionnaire to which he replied and which now carries his name? Containing many photographs, manuscripts and other unique documents, some of them never before published, this book -- the first of its kind about this literary genius -- celebrates the life and an era that have become timeless through the magic of the author's unique style.

Gustave Eiffel was the man behind the landmark that became the symbol par excellence of Paris and so the dominant image of France around the world. However, the work of Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) is obviously not limited to the tower that bears his name. From 1856, when he was commissioned to design a railway bridge in Bordeaux (his first large-scale metal construction), he imposed his style all over the world. The bridge over the Douro in Portugal, the Garabit viaduct, the church in Manila, the Manaus Municipal Market in Brazil and even the framework of the Statue of Liberty are just some of his over 300 masterpieces. Then disaster struck in 1892 when a report directly linked him to the Panama scandal that had come to light three years before. This was the start of a nightmare that would ultimately turn out to be completely unjustified. Deeply wounded, Eiffel withdrew, cloaking himself in his pride. His eldest daughter Valentine stuck by him, not only offering support, but also building up a remarkable collection of memorabilia and documents. She left this precious legacy to her beloved nephew Philippe Coupérie-Eiffel, having partly brought him up. For the first time, to mark the 90th anniversary of his famous ancestor's death, Philippe Coupérie-Eiffel has updated this treasure trove and offers us the chance to get to know the great architect and family man through a wide range of previously unpublished archives.
