The art of Jeff Koons imagined anew, alongside more than 200 works from the acclaimed Pinault collection This new volume brings together the work of one of the most iconic living artists with over 200 pieces from the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseille, France. Although his art encompasses a wide range of satirical sculptural work as well as digital collages and paintings, American sculptor Jeff Koons (born 1955) is best known for his unmistakable large-scale recreations of familiar objects in stainless steel. These famous mirror-finish works and other pieces from his oeuvre are placed in conversation with a series of selections from the Mucem archives, the result of a meticulous curatorial effort by the artist himself. The publication takes advantage of the richness of the Mucem’s collections, with everyday objects, traditional art, documents and photographs, encouraging readers to compare and contrast the artworks on levels both formal and symbolic.

From the blue of Giotto’s frescoes to the monochromatic canvases of Lucio Fontana, Klein found a natural niche for his work in ItalyFollowing Yves Klein USA, Yves Klein Germany and Yves Klein Japan, this book, prepared in collaboration with the Yves Klein Archives, presents nearly 150 archival documents, photographs and letters linked to the artist and his travels through Italy. Through his travels, his exchanges and his artistic or personal encounters, the reader discovers the relationships that Klein was able to create there, in particular with artists such as Lucio Fontana or Piero Manzoni who, like him, knew how to leave a lasting impression on their time. Assisi, Venice, Rome, Milan: each of these cities left a mark on the life of the artist of the blue, whose first exhibition abroad in 1957, Proposte monochrome, epoca blu, took place at the Galerie Apollinaire in Milan.

Free-spirited, utterly unconventional and nondogmatic, Arte Povera radically transformed the language of contemporary artIn the mid-1960s, various Italian artists began to exhibit together under the banner “Arte Povera,” or “poor art,” a term invented in 1967 by the art critic and curator Germano Celant. The 13 principal artists associated with this movement—Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario and Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini and Gilberto Zorio—were mainly interested in the intersections of art and life, of nature and culture. They expanded the fields of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography, and created the first “installations” in the history of art, as well as performance works and actions. Arte Povera retraces the history of this movement, from its birth in Italy to its spread across the world, through a large selection of major works by the 13 main protagonists.

Across sculpture, film and print, Pape consistently places the audience at the center of her immersive practice rooted in social realitiesA sculptor, engraver and filmmaker, Brazilian artist Lygia Pape (1927–2004) began her career within the Grupo Frente movement in Rio de Janeiro, influenced by her training with Fayga Ostrower at the Rio Museum of Modern Art school. She conceived the idea of “weaving space” as a form of perception that becomes a living interaction. Thus, her luminous installations, square reliefs and experimental films, as presented at the Bourse de Commerce, are staged not as finished objects but as immersive experiences.

A dialogue between two virtuosos of formal simplicityIn 1990, Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957–96) visited Roni Horn's (born 1955) solo show at MOCA Los Angeles and saw for the first time her iconic 1982 work Gold Field—a thin piece of gold foil placed on the ground, without any cordon or protection. Deeply affected by the simplicity, strength and beauty of the work, Gonzalez-Torres met Horn in 1991 and told her of the impact the piece had on him. A few days later, Roni Horn sent him a square of gold foil as a mark of their burgeoning friendship. Later, in response, he created “Untitled” (Placebo – Landscape – for Roni), a carpet of candies wrapped in gold cellophane, available for visitors to take. In turn, Horn replied with Gold Mats, Paired – for Ross and Felix (1994–95), this time with two pieces of gold foil placed atop each other. This volume celebrates their friendship, reproducing installations, photographs and sculptures.
