With this Festschrift we, a circle of students, friends and colleagues who have valued Dieter Schuh since we met him in his lectures, at symposia or in his institute, would like to congratulate the jubilarian on his 80th birthday and honour his enormous contribution to Tibetology. We would also like to express our gratitude for his openness, his passion for dis-cussion, his willingness to share with us his insights and analyses, and not least the valuable support which he has always and unreservedly been willing to grant us. He has had a significant influence on our work and our understanding of scholarship, he opened up paths for us, and not infrequently he led us to explore ideas which would play a crucial role in our studies. Sundari Chowk is a beautiful courtyard in Patan which is historical and at the same time aspirational for Nepal. It represents a part of our past when we were prosperous through a land linked economy, food surplus and control over the currency used in the trans-Himalayan trade. This past gives every Nepali the needed motivation to strive into the future with collective excellence as a core value. By purchasing this book, you are helping to sustain the history and architecture of Nepal through the Patan Museum’s effort to conserve and manage these beautiful courtyards.

The early buildings that were constructed over three decades after the Kathmandu Valley opened up in the 1950s, demonstrated an aspiration towards modernization. they expressed the practical requirements of new building types, engineered construction methods and modem architecture forms derived from the contemporary functions. This exhibition is the first documentation of buildings built between 1945 to 1985 that demonstrate important architectural achievements of early modemization in Nepal.
