Manipulative Therapy provides a systematic overview of chain reactions which are the basis of a rational holistic approach. These reactions are closely related to the upright human posture and to the "deep stabilisation system" as shown in the work of Richardson et al in Therapeutic Exercise for Spinal Stabilisation in Low Back Pain. This approach has meant a considerable advance in the therapy and rehabilitation of patients.

It gives a balanced picture of the importance of musles, joints and soft tissues, under the control of the nervous system, the textbook aims to treat disturbance of function, the most common cause of pain in the motor system, in the most effective way.

Locomotor system dysfunctions are shown to be treated very effectively using manual medicine techniques. Spinal column and joint mobility can be restored, and pain triggered by the autonomic nervous system can be positively influenced.

This is a comprehensive source of information relating to pathogenesis, diagnosis, indications and treatment methods, incorporating the latest research findings. Radiological diagnosis is is shown as laying the foundation for successful diagnosis and treatment with manual medicine techniques. Typical conditions associated with pain in the locomotor system is presented and described in functional terms for the first time. The book concludes with chapters covering preventative aspects and expert assessment.

Manipulative Therapy: Musculoskeletal Medicine is the follow on from: Manipulative Therapy in Rehabilitation of the Locomotor System, published by Butterworth Heinemann, 1985.

This title is directed primarily towards health care professionals outside of the United States. It departs from the usual principles-based approach and instead takes a predominantly consequentialist (harms and benefits) approach. It aims to be free of abstract philosophy, but will use the analysis of cases and a reasoned approach to examine alternative arguments. Whilst the book deals with issues in some depth it uses plain language and many clear examples of good and less good practice to illustrate points. It is at a level useful to both beginning and more experienced researchers.

In A Myofascial Approach to Thai Massage, the author takes a radically different approach to Thai Massage by redefining the sen lines in myofascial terms. He provides a coherent system illustrating the function and benefits of Thai Massage through its actions on the myofascial network, lymph and blood flow. In addition, the author questions some of the more dubious moves in Thai Massage; looks at the ‘spiritual’ aspects of Thai Massage in terms of presence, attention and the therapist/client relationship; takes a unique view of Thai Massage and opens the way for further exploration of massage in the myofascial field; and includes some examples of working with clients to illustrate the themes. Although specifically about Thai Massage, content covers many aspects of the therapist/patient relationship - well explored in psychotherapy but surprisingly little covered in massage courses. To support the therapist:the book includes references to anatomy, physiology and therapeutic processes such as neuromuscular technique and covers massage and relaxation and the techniques and relationship skills that make good massage.the author has distilled the techniques, discarded what he considers dangerous or disturbing for the patient and concentrated on understanding the techniques and ways of working necessary to promote complete relaxation for the client.

Headache, Orofacial Pain and Bruxism: Diagnosis and multidisciplinary approaches to management has been written by clinicians for clinicians. It contains the collective knowledge of hundreds of years of clinical experience. The authors are drawn from a range of disciplines which regularly encounter patients with headache, orofacial pain or bruxism. They have described evidence-informed clinical practice derived from anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical concepts.

Patients who present with headache, orofacial pain or bruxism provide a clinical challenge to make sense of symptoms, sources, and contributing factors. There are many structures associated with problems in this region and patients may call on any of a number of health practitioners for diagnosis and treatment. It is often beyond the expertise of a single practitioner to address all facets of the problem without the assistance of colleagues.

This book provides clinicians with the theoretical and clinical information required to appreciate the role of each discipline involved in the management of patients with headache, orofacial pain and bruxism.

Clinicians are encouraged to use a multidisciplinary approach and to collaborate in the comprehensive management of these patients.
