In 2012, a book debuted that would go on to canonical status and usher in a new way of writing about film. Kier-La Janisse's HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN explored hundreds of films through a daringly personal lens. In this pioneering work, anecdotes and memories interweave with film history, criticism, trivia and confrontational imagery to create a reflective personal history and an examination of female madness, both onscreen and off. Cinema is full of neurotic personalities, but few things are more transfixing than a woman losing her mind onscreen. Horror as a genre provides the most welcoming platform for these histrionics: crippling paranoia, desperate loneliness, masochistic death-wishes, dangerous obsessiveness, apocalyptic hysteria. Unlike her male counterpart - 'the eccentric' - the female neurotic lives a shamed existence, making these films those rare places where her destructive emotions get to play. This sharply-designed book, including a 48-page full-colour section, is packed with 680 rare stills, posters, pressbooks and artwork throughout, that combine with family photos and artifacts to form a titillating sensory overload, with a filmography that traverses the acclaimed and the obscure in equal measure. Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog called it 'groundbreaking', no-wave icon Lydia Lunch called it 'a masterpiece', and Molly Ringwald said she 'devoured this compelling, surprising, and moving book'. Re-issued on its 10th anniversary in hardcover to great acclaim, featuring new writing on 100 more films - many of which were inspired in part by the book itself - and hundreds of new images, the expanded edition of Kier-Janisse's renowned text is now available in paperback.

This guide to the films of Ruggero Deodato takes his masterpiece Cannibal Holocaust, the seminal 'found footage' film and famously wrongly accused of being a 'snuff movie', and studies it alongside his other movies. For centuries, mankind has been chilled by tales of vampires. A fixture of literature, art, and folk tales, the vampire was a natural early choice for a movie monster at the dawn of cinema and has remained popular ever since as the screen's most enduring and sexually charged nightmare figure. Within these bloodstained pages, you'll discover that vampires of the silver screen are far more complex and diverse than variations on Dracula and other staples like Carmilla and the Countess Elizabeth Bathory. All the icons are here, from Bela Lugosi and Max Schreck's pioneering fiends to the heyday of Hammer Films, but that's just a sanguinary taste of what's to come as you explore macabre offerings from Hong Kong, India, Italy, France, Germany, and more. Along the way you'll meet vampire-fighting musclemen, rock 'n' roll bloodsuckers, plasma-craving infants, creepy canines, and supernatural strippers. It's all served up on a blood-spattered silver platter by author and film historian Nathaniel Thompson, who also delivers a globetrotting introduction to the history and evolution of vampire cinema from the silent era to the modern age of undead heartthrobs and vampire assassins. Sweetening the bloody deal is a foreword by legendary writer and monster expert Kim Newman, who dragged vampire literature into the daylight of the modern age with his Anno Dracula series. Take our hand, if you dare, and accept our invitation to explore the dizzying array of frightening, hilarious, and often beautiful sights and sounds of the undead on film.

In this candid memoir, horror legend Stuart Gordon gives a vivid account of his remarkable life, from a student manning the barricades during the civil unrest of the 1960s, via an infamous extended stint as an experimental theater maverick that included his arrest on obscenity charges for a satirical 1968 reimagining of Peter Pan, to ultimately becoming an iconic figure in cult cinema. Along with actors Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, producer Brian Yuzna, and screenwriter Dennis Paoli, Gordon shocked the world with his wickedly witty 1985 debut feature Re-Animator. The smash hit film immediately established Gordon as the pre-eminent cinematic interpreter of legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft. He went on to undertake a succession of horror, science fiction, and thriller productions that saw him working across the globe, from Italy (Castle Freak), Hungary (Daughter of Darkness) and Australia (Fortress), to Ireland (Space Truckers) and Spain (Dagon). Gordon recalls a wealth of anecdotes, revealing what it was like to direct actors such as Anthony Perkins, Dennis Hopper, Oliver Reed, Lance Henriksen and William H. Macy. Stuart Gordon's memoir is an authentically funny, disarmingly honest glimpse into the life of a director pushing the limits of what the mainstream would accept. It's the story of a bona fide original, an uncompromising artist with the common touch, and of a loving family man who delighted in disturbing us all with his restless, brilliant imagination. Gordon's filmography ranges from the iconic Lovecraftian horror From Beyond (1986), to science fiction action flicks including Robot Jox (1990), gruelling period pieces such as The Pit and the Pendulum (1998), the brutal drama King of the Ants (2003), and his David Mamet adaptation Edmond (2005). Gordon has left behind a unique, subversive cinematic legacy. Naked Theater & Uncensored Horror is Stuart Gordon's final completed work, presented by FAB Press unexpurgated, and fully endorsed and approved by the Gordon family trust.

BEHIND THE PINK CURTAIN takes the reader on a wild joy ride deep into the hinterlands of Japanese culture, society and radical politics by way of the weird and wonderful world of the country's distinctive sex film movements. Jasper Sharp's definitive study focuses on one of the most notorious sectors of Japanese filmmaking, the erotic Pink Film, or pinku eiga genre, and the closely related Roman Porno films produced by Nikkatsu studios from 1971 to 1988. From the early '60s onwards major Japanese film studios and independent producers alike have kept up a conveyor belt level of output of pornographic features intended purely for cinema release. Up until the 2010s, just short of 100 such titles were shot on 35mm every year intended for screening in a specialist network of adult cinemas across the nation. Many such films have been released on home video in the West or screened at international film festivals, while a significant number of Japan's most noted filmmakers today cut their teeth in this industry. Based on extensive interviews with many of the leading figures in the field, BEHIND THE PINK CURTAIN is a colourful and exhaustive expose of Japan's most vibrant and prolific filmmaking sector. Read about: The ins and outs of Japanese censorship from the wartime onwards; How topless deep sea diving girls came to woo local audiences in the '50s; How a TV nature documentary maker made nude female Tarzan movies; How '60s mavericks Koji Wakamatsu and Masao Adachi met John and Yoko; How one of Nikkatsu's leading directors went it alone to make a film about powerboat racing and ended up in the bad books of the yakuza; How the sex farce Horny Home Tutor: Teacher's Love Juice was re-titled The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai and became one of the most talked-about Japanese films ever, playing at more than twenty international film festivals.

There is no shortage of loaded - and often gendered - symbolism in the sport of cockfighting. And this becomes a starting point for author Kier-La Janisse (who broke new ground in film criticism with her acclaimed book House of Psychotic Women) to investigate the themes of obsession, competition, mobility and nobility that dominate the hyper-masculine world of Monte Hellman's existential and controversial film, Cockfighter (1974), based on the 1962 novel by crime writer Charles Willeford (Miami Blues). Infamously touted as the only movie that producer Roger Corman ever lost money on, Cockfighter stars character actor Warren Oates as Frank Mansfield, a career cocker who has taken a vow of silence until he can win the Cockfighter of the Year Award. Surrounded by fellow cockfighters played by Harry Dean Stanton, Ed Begley Jr, Steve Railsback, Richard B. Shull and even author/screenwriter Charles Willeford himself, the film traverses the underground cockfighting world of the Deep South, with a highly detailed documentation of this unique subculture brought vividly to life by esteemed cinematographer Nestor Almendros. Densely illustrated and featuring interviews with director Monte Hellman, producer Roger Corman and several surviving cast and crew members, Janisse's study explores the many mythologies that intersect in Cockfighter, approaching the story and its backdrop through a variety of lenses, using a combination of cultural criticism, production history and even personal anecdotes, as the author delves into the contradictory world of cockfighting in the American South. At its core it is a story about work, honour, conviction and finding religion and beauty in strange places. 'Janisse leverages her impressive scope of research toward a truly dazzling analysis of the film.' - LA Review of Books.

The western is America's definitive contribution to cinema, a bullet-spattered blueprint for the nation's image of itself and its place in the world. To watch a western is to witness the birth of a nation, overseen by square-jawed sheriffs and steel-nerved gunfighters, armed with six-guns and a clear moral vision. Their victories against outlaws and Indians were proof that might was right - so long as it was in the correct hands. Renegade Westerns shows the shadowy side of this picture, where heroes behaved like villains, where Indians were not always the savages we'd been led to expect.

The latest installment in the FrightFest series, take a terrifying tour of the past 120 years of ghost cinema.

Milligan, perhaps the most compelling lone wolf in cinema history, gets his due in this definitive work. A dressmaker, actor and puppeteer, Milligan cranked out titles like Bloodthirsty Butchers, The Body Beneath, and The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! on threadbare budgets. Due to their many limitations, his movies made Milligan the laughing-stock of the film industry. McDonough changed all that by providing the necessary context and pathos, allowing these chaotic yet highly personal movies (and their creator) to be seen in a new and sympathetic light. This book also serves as a history of the shadowy New York City sexploitation business, 1950s/60s cafe culture and Off-Off Broadway theatre. Starring a cast of unforgettable and elusive characters, the gripping narrative turns grimly personal. It's told with unflinching honesty by biographer and journalist Jimmy McDonough. McDonough's magnum opus is packed full of rare images. Dubbed best show business biography of the year by TIME magazine, The Ghastly One finally gets the wide exposure it deserves in this accessible and affordable paperback edition. Hilarious at times, deeply unsettling, and ultimately heartbreaking, The Ghastly One will haunt its readers long after the last page is turned.
