Written in 1928, H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu defined the ancient gods as dark creatures who came from the stars and ruled the world before mankind. When these ancient ones awaken, humanity is plagued by a nightmare of terrors etched upon an epic backdrop. The author’s concept deeply redefined the horror story with this thrilling, dense mystery that spawned a virtual genre. The artist Gary Gianni and designer Marcelo Anciano both felt that Lovecraft’s short story presented an opportunity to visually expand the Cthulhu Mythos and push the boundaries of illustrated books. Intense and fast-paced, the tale enabled them to explore graphic storytelling and illustrate the text in a unique way. It was a personal project for Gianni, who drew upon his decades of experience in illustrating numerous books and graphic novels. The Call of Cthulhu, as illustrated by Gary Gianni, is a fusion of cinematic design, the graphic novel and illustrated books. Over a hundred finished pencil drawings with color pieces enhance and bring to life the work of two visionaries—Lovecraft and Gianni—in an extraordinary feat of storytelling and art.

Covenant boasts the first collection of Allen’s personal drawings and paintings. Each of his fantastical characters is accompanied by a line of text, a poem or a brief story that captures their essence. These visual narratives are pulled to the surface through Allen’s renowned mastery of storytelling and his use of graphite, pencil and oils. The result is a fascinating journey into the mind of this intriguing artist. Allen’s strength comes from his mystical connection to his work. He views himself as a guardian and creates artistic personas that serve the well-being of others. At first sight, his mythological characters may look odd, monstrous or grotesque. Yet they represent the good that can be found when you look below the surface of an individual. Allen has always liked the underside of things. He embraces the bits of mortality that poke out from under the skin. The artwork collected here addresses Allen’s need to face the challenges that surround him while projecting himself into the art. He is driven by creating images based on the strength of an individual’s actions, regardless of how they may be perceived for not conforming to society’s semblance of beauty.

Gilt documents Cooper’s personal struggle through guilt, mourning and, finally, acceptance as the artist lost and then refound a love for their craft after taking a two-year hiatus. Through imagery revolving around the cycles of life and death, seasons, joy and pain, Cooper explores the relationship between making art and an unhealthy reliance on it for self-worth and identity. Cooper discovered that art is the result of one’s experiences on this earth and not the reason for them. This awareness fueled experiments with various media, psychologically driven concepts, and a love of animals and nature—all of which continue to typify Cooper’s work in their newest body of work. This collection highlights over 155 drawings and paintings that includes new art, plus a sampling of older, unpublished pieces not included in previous volumes. Spectres is a curated collection of over 110 small artworks made by Tran Nguyen in the past decade. Each painting is a means of exploration—a study whose purpose is to develop a deep understanding of new media. The works depict loosely rendered female portraits or, on seldom occasions, animals. They were created without the restraints imposed by extensive preliminaries that Tran often adheres to as part of her standard illustration process. This study series started out as an outlet for trying new ideas, materials, color palettes and substrates, without the looming pressure of perfection or deadlines. They fulfill Tran's need to be adventurous, which allows her to stumble with her brushstrokes and evolve as an artist. The time spent with each piece was brief—to capture the fleeting moments of her artistic curiosity. This series has helped Tran to freely discover unconventional and unique methods of art-making, which has been incorporated into her gallery and illustration work. This includes the application of pressed flowers and embroidery. What began with a few small-scale portrait paintings has become the stepping stones to hone the technical skills that inform her larger pieces. The works in this book serve as guides into Tran's artistic exploration.Spectres is produced with a premium spot color for interior text, includes blue gilt edges, and a blue foil stamp for the Spectres title on the front cover.
