A magnificent, richly illustrated large-format work on the Virgin Islands of the United States. The book takes as its point of departure the buildings and monuments of the former Danish West Indies but also presents the landscapes, people, and history of the islands from the last decades of the seventeenth century until today. Specifically, the book tells the stories of selected sites where typical architecture can be seen, sites that are important points of access to the history of the Danish West Indies and the people who created that history: the masons who built the forts, the architects behind the design of cities and schools, the mapmakers, the officials of the Danish West India–Guinea Company and the Danish state, the plantation owners, the enslaved workers, the free coloured artisans, and others.

The Thief tells the story of Niels Heidenreich, the mastermind behind the theft of the audacious theft of the Golden Horns, cultural treasures so revered in Denmark that the Danish National Museum showcases replicas in their absence. From his tumultuous upbringing as the son of a drunken pastor in rural Jutland to his transformation into a goldsmith in Copenhagen, the narrative delves into his ventures in counterfeiting as a desperate means to support his family, his incarceration, and his obsession with gold. The story offers a profound exploration of 17th and 18th-century Copenhagen and Denmark. The Thief captivates with its vivid portrayal of a bygone era, weaving together elements of intrigue, honor, and self-discovery against the backdrop of Copenhagen. Ulrik Langens's masterful storytelling paints a rich tapestry of Denmark's most infamous thief, intertwining threads of history, innovation, and personal redemption. In the hands of one of Denmark's foremost contemporary historians, The Thief emerges as a compelling testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Unbounded Jews is the story of Denmark's (failed) engagement and exchange with Morocco in the 18th century. The story is told through two Jewish family clans, Sumbel and Buzaglo, whose members were adventurers, cosmopolitans, merchants, and diplomats. Denmark became the first country with which the sultan made a trade and peace treaty in 1753, and Denmark played a central role in the African country's efforts to establish diplomatic relations and trade with other European countries. The 18th century was marked by strong competition among the European powers for colonies and trade with overseas countries. The Danish king Frederik V invested heavily in trade with Morocco – both economically and militarily – but today the adventure has been forgotten. The Danish-Moroccan adventure and its dramatic human consequences add significant chapters to Jewish and Danish history. Based on Danish and a wide range of international archives, Bent Blüdnikow follows the Sephardic Jews across much of the globe to understand their motives, actions, and significance.

There are many romantic notions regarding the Danish West Indies, and surely such notions played a part in convincing thousands of Danish men to let themselves be recruited and become soldiers or gendarmes serving in the Caribbean region. In 1755, the Danish state took over the islands from the trading company Vestindisk-Guineisk Kompagni, the West Indian–Guinea Company, and the first soldiers were sent out the same year. After this, with the exception of two brief periods of British military occupation in times of war early in the nineteenth century, the Danish authorities maintained a military presence on the islands until they were sold to the United States in 1917 and changed their name to the Virgin Islands of the United States.Service in the West Indies was characterized by high mortality, not least as result of various tropical diseases, and many of the soldiers ended up regretting signing their contracts. This book describes the organization of the military, the individuals who were hired and how they were recruited, their uniforms and equipment, their lodgings, and their experiences during their service. For the most part, serviee in the Danish West Indies did not offer great challenges, and boredom and homesickness were kept at bay with local rum, soldiers in the islands did confront serious situations several times.

Why is the world order always under transformation? Life-Modes in a Changing World Order describes how the formation of people's distinct cultural life-modes and the states' distinct defence modes contribute to the continuous and uneven transformation of the state system.Elaborating the concept of 'neoculturation', this work analyses how people strive to sustain, improve, and defend the conditions of existence of their own life-modes – with the unintended result that these modes are changing. It scrutinises how, when, and why the neoculturation of each life-mode is also changing the conditions of existence for the other life-modes with which it coexists – and the society these form together. The neoculturation concept is part of a theory on how struggles for recognition at the global level splits into self-defending states whose cultural modes of life condition each other. This fission theory – in critical dialogue with other classical and contemporary theories of culture and society – aims to explain why the formation of state forms constantly develops and dissolves into inter dependent socio-cultural wholes of necessary life-modes. To do this, Life-modes in a Changing World Order elaborates the concepts of state, mode of production, and culture in analyses based on comprehensive ethnographic description and ethno logical expla nation of how modes of life are changing. Fieldwork has been conducted in Denmark and China providing insights into people's?contrasting?ideas of what makes up 'the good life': The good family life, the good professional life, the good community, the good society.Life-Modes in a Changing World Order demonstrates how and explains why peoples' life-modes have been changing from the cold war, high modernity period of the 20th century to the 21st century characterised by neoliberal political economy, great power rivalry and the global challenges of rising inequality, climate change and biodiversity loss.

The wicked problems of our time - climate change, migration, inequality, productivity, and mental health - remain stubbornly unresolved in Western democracies. It’s time for a new way to puzzle. This book takes the reader on a journey from London to Berlin, and from Rome to Washington DC and Copenhagen, to discover why modern politics keeps breaking down. We’re tackling twenty-first century problems with twentiethcentury ideas and nineteenth-century institutions. In search of answers, the author gate-crashes a Conservative party at an English estate, visits a stressed-out German minister at his Mallorcan holiday home, and listens in on power gossip in Washington DC’s restaurant scene. The Puzzle State offers one of the most engaging and thoughtful analyses of Western democracies in recent years. Based on over 100 interviews with top political players, surveys conducted across five countries, and stories of high-profile policy failures, it uncovers a missing link in reform efforts: the absence of ongoing feedback loops between decision-makers and frontline practitioners in schools, hospitals, and companies. But there is a way forward. The author introduces the concept of the Puzzle State, which uses collective intelligence and AI to (re)connect politicians with the people implementing reforms on the ground. The Puzzle State tackles highprofile wicked problems and enables policies to adapt as they meet messy realities. No one holds all the pieces in the Puzzle State. The feedback loop must cut across all sectors - from civil society to corporations - just like solving a complex puzzle requires commitment, cooperation, and creativity.

Christian VI ruled Denmark-Norway from 1730 until his death in 1746. As King he was enthusiastic about construction projects - he built the first Christiansborg Palace, Hirschholm Palace, and the Hermitage Palace. As an adherent of the Pietist religious movement, he believed it was sinful to enjoy oneself and life at his court was reminiscent of life in a monastery. He took a number of measures to combat a long-lasting economic slump, one of which was the introduction of the hated system of adscription known as the stavnsbånd. As the first Danish absolute monarch to do so, he managed to avoid war throughout his entire reign. Frederik V reigned over Denmark-Norway from 1746 until his death in 1766. For the most part he was a ruler in name only however, as he had developed a pattern of alcohol abuse as a young man that rendered him unable to administer his power in an independent fashion. He therefore had to transfer power to competent ministers and in particular to his High Court Marshal, Adam Gottlob Moltke, who functioned as the real head of state throughout Frederik V's entire reign. The kingdom experienced a general economic upswing during this period, and the court came to be characterised by elegant splendour, while trade and industry benefitted from Denmark-Norway's policy of neutrality toward warring parties. Moltke organized the Construction of the palace quarter of Amalienborg and Frederiksstaden in honour of the King. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Christian VII was King of Denmark-Norway from 1766 until 1808, although we was unable to rule because of mental health problems. He acceded to the throne when he was just sixteen, and his accession was followed by a few years of scandal and drama at the royal court. The physician J.F. Struensee took complete control of Christian VII at the start of his reign while at the same time beginning an affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde. Struensee was executed in 1772, and the King subsequently had to accept being controlled by members of his own family - first by Dowager Queen Juliane Marie and Hereditary Prince Frederik, and then by Christian VII's own son, Crown Prince Frederik (VI).This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Frederik VI ruled as King of Denmark from 1806 until 1839. Before that he had ruled as Crown Prince on behalf of Christian VII after having seized power by means of a coup d'état in 1784. Frederik began his long regency by implementing far-sighted measures, including the great agricultural reforms, in cooperation with competent advisors. In contrast, the Napoleonic Wars, which for Denmark meant the Battle of Copenhagen of 1801, the Bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, and the relinquishing of Norway in 1814, did not go well for Frederik VI. Frederik VI did not care for revolutions, but he reigned in an age in which absolute monarchy became controversial, and as King he had to take action to confront contemporary demands for social reforms. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid were the Danish royal couple from 1947 until 1972, when King Frederik died and was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Queen Margrethe II. In contrast to his predecessors, Frederik IX was seen as a man of the people, and thanks to the influence of Queen Ingrid he endowed his reign with kingly dignity. Together they modernised the Danish monarchy and came to symbolise an exemplary modern Danish nuclear family. They mastered the art of being both popular and royal in a time in which handling of the media became increasingly important for the monarchy. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Frederik III reigned from 1648 to 1670 and introduced absolute monarchy in Denmark-Norway. Absolute monarchy established itself in many countries in Europe during the 17th century, and in Denmark-Norway it was established unusually quickly and firmly as a result of a military defeat by Sweden that cost the realm the provinces of Scania, Halland, and Blekinge. Frederik III and his queen Sophie Amalie were two very different individuals who were very capable when it came to realizing their political goals. The rival couple Corfitz Ulfelt and Leonora Christina were among those who experienced setbacks because of this. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Christian VIII ruled Denmark from 1839 to 1848 as the country's last absolute monarch - in 1814 he was also briefly Norway's first constitutional king, and he took the initiative to introduce the constitutions of both Norway and Denmark.Christian VIII and Queen Caroline Amalie lived during a time that was characterised by political unrest but also by cultural richness, and their circle of acquaintances included Hans Christian Andersen, N.F.S. Grundtvig, Bertel Thorvaldsen, C.W. Eckersberg, Adam Oehlenschläger, and H.C. Ørsted. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Christian IX and Queen Louise were the first couple of the Glücksburg line on the Danish throne. They had a difficult beginning as they ascended the throne in 1863, immediately prior to the military defeat by Prussia and Austria in 1864. However, they eventually became popular with the Danish people, not least because they secured such advantageous marriages for their six children that, within their own lifetimes, they became known as ""Europe's parents-in-law"". Today there are not many European royals who are not descendants of Christian IX and Queen Louise, who died in 1906 and 1898 respectively. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Christian X and Queen Alexandrine were Denmark's royal couple from 1912 to 1947. They reigned during a period in which the world was dramatically changing. Two world wars and serious economic crises left their mark on their reign and contributed to the royal couple's great significance as a centre around which the nation could gather.During the same period, the role of the monarchy was fundamentally changed; the Danish monarchy found its place in a modern parliamentary democracy, and following the advent of modern mass media the royal couple became a public presence. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Christian V reigned from 1670 until 1699. He was the first to accede to the throne as a hereditary king following the introduction of the hereditary and absolute monarchy by Frederik III. During the reign of Christian V, state power became centralised and the absolute monarchy was consolidated, and he made a competent but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to reconquer Scania, Halland, and Blekinge, territories that had been lost during his father's reign. Though there is an equestrian statue of him at the centre of Kongens Nytorv, the square the King had built, there are probably not many Danes who are familiar with the details of Christian V's life. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Frederik IV reigned from 1699 until 1730. None of the other absolute monarchs in Danish history ruled in as headstrong a fashion as he did. Frederik IV took it upon himself to make as many of the realm's decisions as possible, and this worked remarkably well. With the help of Tordenskjold, he brought Denmark-Norway safely through the bloody Great Northern War, which would be Denmark's final showdown with its arch-enemy Sweden. In his love life, too, he was extremely headstrong - he abducted his beloved Anna Sophie Reventlow, with whom he entered into a morganatic marriage and whom he later made his Queen. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

Dance in the Mirror is an ultimate celebration of dance, and not least ballet, in all its many guises. In particular, it pays homage to Danish ballet photographer John R. Johnsen (1945-2016), whose work is presented here in collected form for the first time. Artistically, Johnsen towers above the vast majority of his contemporaries and, in the period 1967-96 during which he photographed the Royal Danish Ballet and leading international companies such as New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Martha Graham Dance Company, he was indisputably Denmark's foremost photographer of dance. His photographs uniquely document the work of these outstanding companies in that period. Johnsen's photographs show taut, lithely elegant bodies captured in mid-movement, beads of perspiration often visible on the skin, his camera preferring always to be as close as possible. This book presents 300 of Johnsen's finest photographs spanning his long career. Photographs ranging from the ballets of August Bournonville to those of Flemming Flindt – and depicting dance performances from Maurice Béjart to Japanese butoh. Each photograph has been carefully selected by Johnsen himself, aided by leading ballet critics and authors of the book's accompanying texts Anne Middelboe Christensen and Erik Aschengreen in collaboration with librarian Kirsten Sørensen of the Royal Danish Library – National Library of Denmark.

Textile artist and designer Vibeke Rohland has created both unique works and works for industrial production in collaboration with Marimekko, Kvadrat, adidas Kvadrat, HAY, Georg Jensen, and FDB Møbler, among others. She has set a new agenda for how to work with textiles at the intersection of art and design. Counterprint etcetera places Vibeke Rohland’s practice in a contemporary artistic and interdisciplinary context with Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, punk and pop culture as her starting points. The book depicts Rohland’s work from the artistic field to the commercial market.

In Denmark, Jan Bonde Nielsen’s name is primarily associated with the B&W Shipyard and, not least, with the accusations that led to a years-long court case against him. Fortunately, his life has been much more than that. He was fully acquitted but, disillusioned with the business climate, chose to leave Denmark to continue his business career abroad. First in the London property market – where he, among other things, bought the famous Wembley Stadium – and later in the oil industry in Russia and Georgia. Today he lives in Kenya, where, at the age of 87, he continues to be active in several business and charitable projects. In Start Again, Jan Bonde Nielsen tells his fascinating and extraordinary life story – a life sustained by family and strong friendships and filled with colourful and dramatic business adventures across much of the globe.

This book tells the story of Amalienborg and Frederiksstaden and the royal residents of the palace over the centuries.Amalienborg's palace square constitutes the central square of the monumental quarter of Frederiksstaden, which Frederik V had built starting in about 1750. The four palaces of the nobility that make up the palace complex were built simultaneously, but were taken over by the royal family after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794. Since 1920 Amalienborg has been the permanent residence of the Danish monarchy. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.

This book tells the story of Christian IV (1577-1648), who became King of Denmark and Norway when he was only 11 years old. He ruled for 60 years and was responsible for the construction of a number of Denmark's most beloved buildings, particularly in Copenhagen. When he died, he left behind a kingdom that had been impoverished by war and excessive taxation and had permanently lost its earlier status as a major European power. Nevertheless, he was considered a brave hero and martyr by generations that followed him, and he has gone down in history as the greatest king Denmark has ever had. This book is part of the Crown Series, a series of small books on the Danish monarchy and related subjects published in cooperation with the Royal Danish Collection.
