Amid the beauty of Michigan's lakes and forested hills lurk spine-tingling stories of the supernatural. These tales of fright-filled folklore span the length and breadth of the Great Lakes State. Read about the Red Dwarf, a hideous harbinger of doom, who continues to be sighted in Detroit whenever tragedy visits; a cantankerous ghost that hampers renovations of an old farmhouse in Gladwin; and the mysterious growls and barks that haunt Dog Lady Island in east Monroe, where long ago a solitary woman began her legendary metamorphosis into a canine monstrosity.

From the pristine Outer Banks to the majestic Blue Mountains, North Carolina is a land of contrasts. Its history reflects this fact; historic landmarks abound, and through their preservation and restoration the past breathes again. Of course, in some places, the past doesn't need to be resuscitated, since it never left. North Carolina is home to a great number of ghosts and legends, which testify to the human experience: * The spectral Maco Light appears when the spirit of brakeman Joe Baldwin returns to search for his severed head. * In the Devil's Tramping Ground, the Prince of Darkness himself is said to roam. * In Bentonville and Fort fisher, sites of two of the bloodiest battles ever fought on North Carolina soil, Civil War specters rise from the mists to walk the earth again. * The Brown Lady, dead of a broken heart when her true love never returned from the Civil War, now haunts Chowan College. * A century and a half after their hanging, the bodies of 50 marauders still swing from the trees in Hannah's Creek Swamp, pleading for mercy. * These are but a few examples of hundreds of stories that comprise the Tar Heel State's haunted folklore.

In the mysterious shadows of the Appalachian Mountains, ghosts linger long after their bodies have been put to rest. This old, eroded mountain chain stretches from northern Alabama in the south all the way to Maine in the northeast. Veteran ghost writer Susan Smitten has written a spine-tingling collection of tales to thrill and entertain: in Tryon, North Carolina, a woman's great-grandmother continues to watch over her family from beyond the grave; East Tennessee State University has been called the most haunted campus in the southern United States; the old lunatic asylum in Weston, West Virginia, is a ghost hunter's paradise; old habits die hard -- or don't die at all -- for the founder of the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia ... and more, from all over the Appalachians.

More than 600,000 men died during the Civil War, but the conflict also displaced countless civilians. In this collection, noted authors Dan Asfar and Edrick Thay recount fascinating stories of soldiers, statesmen and star-crossed lovers, both ordinary and extraordinary, whose lingering spirits serve as a testament to America's most devastating war: * Eyewitnesses spot the ghosts of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis and Edgar Allan Poe at Fort Monroe, one of the few Union forts in the Confederate South. * In New Orleans, the spirits of General Pierre Beauregard and his fallen soldiers continue to fight the tragic Battle of Shiloh. * An anti-slavery crusader haunts Harpers Ferry, where he staged a munitions raid and was hanged before the war broke out. * 'Old Green Eyes,' the disembodied head of a fallen soldier, terrifies visitors to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Georgia. * In the cemetery of a former Ohio war prison, a battalion of Confederate dead rise from their anonymous graves. * An entire chapter explores the many specters of Gettysburg, the war's most infamous battlefield. * For anyone interested in the paranormal, Ghost Stories of the Civil War will prove a chilling and unforgettable treat.

The ghosts of the past still haunt the dusty gold rush towns and frontier outposts where the legendary West was born and died. Dan Asfar explores the haunted histories of some of America's most infamous gunslingers, lawmen and opportunists, as well as of the prisons, saloons and forts where the lawlessness of the Old West found its truest expression.
