There are many mysteries at Glastonbury, but they are all rooted in one great mystery: how is it that this small place, isolated among the Somerset marshes, plays such a leading part in the spiritual history of Britain? Here the ever-living Mystery is given historical context. Its themes and characters – King Arthur, St Joseph of Arimathea, the Grail Quest, the Zodiacal Twelve, the Enchantments of Britain, the Ritual of the Chalice and the Prophecy of Restoration – are traced from their beginnings, against the background of religious and social changes from prehistoric to modern times. As veils are removed, the traditions of Glastonbury are seen in a new light, as symbols of an ancient magical rite for the invocation of paradise on earth.
