India is familiar ground for Granta, having devoted two classic issues to the country, though much has changed since the last dispatch, published on the cusp of the Modi era. 173 will feature exceptional contemporary fiction and poetry in translation, as well as articles dedicated to the Indian space program; the bloody twilight of the Naxalites in Jharkhand; archaeology wars, Bollywood, jingoism, and national myth-making; the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia; the delicate and fraught care for an ailing parent; as well as a historical introduction by the editor that situates contemporary controversies and aesthetic fault lines in perspective. Plus, in-depth interviews with leading writers and historians, alongside work from emerging and established photographers. Contributors will be drawn from across the country, with a focus on vernacular authors as opposed to the elite enclaves of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

When Sigmund Freud died, Auden wrote 'he is no more a person now but a whole climate of opinion'. Something similar could be said for therapy today. We live in a therapeutic age. It is generally accepted that the world of subconsciousness plays into all of our thoughts and actions, and that, in the hands of experts, it can be directed along more fruitful pathways. But as a science and a practice, therapy has always been fraught with dilemmas and crises. It has been bound up with power and manipulation, though its finest practitioners and participants counter that it contributes to human liberation. This issue of Granta explores all of these dimensions of therapy. The issue includes non-fiction from Sheila Heti, Jesse Barron, Paul Keegan, Elfriede Jelinek, Deborah Levy and Dushko Petrovich Córdova; interviews with Christopher Bollas, Juliet Mitchell and Jonathan Lear; fiction by Benjamin Kunkel, Camilla Grudova, Anne Serre and Missouri Williams; photoessays by Louise Bourgeois, Rinko Kawauchi, Musuk Nolte (introduced by Guadalupe Nettel) and Nigel Shafran; plus poetry by Robert Hass, Natalie Shapero, Victor Heringer and Olive Franklin.

America was a country dreamed up by religious fanatics and realised through violence. Philip Roth gave a name for this 'blessed rage for purity': the 'indigenous American Berserk'.Granta 176 looks at what's left of this vicious drive, in all its most virulent and florid strains. The American Berserk is the true psychogeography of the country, its dark underbelly. It's what's not fit to print, the stories that cannot be squeezed into the frame of nightly news. For years America has tried to tame itself - commodifying its rage through leisure and politics - but the wild side remains.

Granta once laid down the rules for how not to write about Africa (Binyavanga Wainaina, issue 92), but it has been less explicit about how one ought to write about it. In this special issue, the magazine turns to the literary richness of one African country rather than the continent in the abstract: Nigeria.177 marks a return to the land that produced some of Granta's finest contributors - Adewale Maja-Pearce, Buchi Emecheta, Helon Habila - with fiction and poetry in translation, reportage from the Fulani heartlands of the north, dispatches from a Lagos newly reconfigured by entrepreneurial fervour, and reflections on the oil frontier whose corrosive effects on the body politic continue to shape the delta and the nation alike.

Granta's spring issue, guest-edited by award-winning writer Rana Dasgupta, explores membranes of the tissue, self, collective, nation, species and cosmos. It features new poetry by Andrew McMillan, Tishani Doshi and Ida Börjel, a new translation of Vladimir Mayakovsky by Ilya Kaminsky and Katie Farris, as well as photography from Anita Khemka, Arturo Soto and Mónica de la Torre. Granta 151: Membranes showcases cutting-edge fiction from Lydia Davis, Fatin Abbas, Steven Heighton, J. Robert Lennon, Mahreen Sohail and Chloe Wilson, plus a host of thought-provoking essays: - Emanuele Coccia on birth, metamorphosis and the very strange miracle of life- Mark Doty on gentrification and homelessness in New York City- Anouchka Grose on infidelity and the idea of the unwanted third- Ruchir Joshi on all those kids his son once was- Kapka Kassabova on Lake Ohrid- Anita Roy on the great crested newt- Esther Woolfson on the relationship between humans and animalsPlus: Eyal Weizman in conversation with Rana Dasgupta, on contemporary architectural strategies for repelling and dividing people.

Psychoanalysis famously privileges the vertical relationship between a child (the patient) and their parents over the seemingly equal and unproblematic horizontal connections between siblings. Baby-boomers, gen-X, millennials, zoomers: the dividing lines among generations in literary culture have become stark to the point of parody. Granta 166 tests the limits of each generation's given definition in popular culture against the reality of its most sharply observed fiction.Stories by Andrew O'Hagan, Brandon Taylor, Nico Walker and Lillian Fishman fill an issue that captures the change in values, aesthetic emphasis and technological experience among different age cohorts, all the while questioning the legitimacy of the generational conceit. Non-fiction includes meditations on the short history of the idea of 'a generation', as well as on the relative absence of youth revolts in our time, and the shadowy rule of the old - gerontocracy - in societies across the globe.
