The custom of my family is to tell stories at Christmas. Specifically, stone stories. Tales whose nativity and metaphor, narrative and scene, are rooted in what appears to the casual observer unremarkable stones. Every year we gathered...to hear the stones. - excerpt from ""Christmas Stones & The Story Chair"".History is retold through the gift of story at Christmastime in award-winning writer Justin Isherwood's ""Christmas Stones & The Story Chair"", when he places the farm's great aunts and uncles upon the hard seat of the story chair and they tell their homespun tales to the next generation.""In my family it was this chair that raised us up and made stories of us, despite we were no else but farm folk. When set in our midst, the noise of us ceased, children unaccountably grew quiet, menfolk hushed their politics. Wars, if there were some, went off so far in the distance as to momentarily cease. In the presence of this chair it seemed all creation slowed and drew near with us. The cows listened, the trees crept close crowded with expectant birds, the children folded their knees beneath their chins - all waiting to hear. Jupiter was seen eavesdropping at the window...Every Christmas it was so. The story chair was brought forth, set in the center of the parlor and the stories began."" - excerpt from ""Christmas Stones & The Story Chair"".

The Sturgeon Bay Memorial Bridge on Michigan Street has long been an object of controversy in Door County, Wisconsin. Time after time, the 80-year-old landmark has had to prove its worth to avoid the wrecking ball. Since 2005, songwriters from across the United States have come to Sturgeon Bay on the second weekend in June with one purpose in mind: to save the old bridge. The Construction Zone is a week of collaborative songwriting that is part of the annual festival. Writing takes place in motel rooms, coffee shops, down by the waterside, and all over town. Internationally known artists like Jackson Browne and Jane Wiedlin hang out with local and emerging musicians, including national acts. The Steel Bridge Songfest has rapidly become a new Door County tradition, and now more people seem to be loving that old bridge--now recognized by the Wisconsin Historical Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Steel Bridge Songfest, with its infusion of new songs written solely for the event is truly a first-of-its-kind festival, merging musical inspiration with historic preservation and creating the world's largest collection of music inspired by a bridge. The writers and artists all volunteer their time, energy, and creativity to this project. Royalties are donated to the Steel Bridge Fund. Songs by: Jackson Browne, pat mAcdonald, Liv Mueller, Mo Rose, Allan MacPhee, Cat Braaten, Corey Carlson, Paulie Rocco, Charlie Cheney, Andy Lubahn, Kim Manning, Adam Mackintosh, J.J. Verner, Rob Atwood, Troy Therrien, Ilan Laks, Jason Berken, Bruce Reaves, Mike Bleck, and Tom Schriner-Schmitt

Singer/songwriter/one-man-band pat mAcdonald performs here under the name of an alter ego called Purgatory Hill. On these thirteen tracks he plays a Lowebow "Purgatory Hill Harp," which consists of a cigar box and two poles with three guitar strings and a bass string attached. Slide guitar, banjo, and bass seem to erupt from its massive amplified sound. Add neck-rack harmonica, electrified foot stomp, and partner melaniejane (http://www.melaniejane.com) on tambourine, maracas, keyboards, and backing vocals and you have, in the words of one critic, "a sexy little freak show of a duo!"
