Jobst Brandt (1935-2015) was a California cyclist and engineer whose passion and intellect changed the way we ride bikes today. Years before the evolution of mountain bikes and gravel bikes, his legendary 'Jobst rides' took riders and their bikes to places they hadn't gone before. Jobst spent almost fifty summers in the Alps, lightweight touring and adventuring over 2,000 miles each time, always carrying a camera to document his trip. He was also the brilliant mind behind many innovations such as the bike computer and smooth tires, and he even influenced the birth of the mountain bike.

The hidden history of modernism in the mountainsIn southern France, high above the villas and the pleasure palaces of the Côte d’Azur, there is the Alpine Extension of the Maginot Line. These little-known fortifications were built before the Second World War to protect France from Mussolini. But nobody has successfully invaded over the Alps since Napoleon, and things didn’t quite turn out as the French expected…Now, the bunkers are marooned, forlorn and crumbling, in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of France. They are disappearing into the landscapes they once commanded, stray facts from a future passed, still waiting for an onslaught that never came.Join writer Max Leonard and photographer Camille McMillan as they uncover and document these hidden sites…New, expanded edition with additional photography120pp with a 24pp insert on grey paper stock75 full colour photographs and 30 one-colour photos by Camille McMillan, plus maps and diagramsEssay by Max Leonard227 x 170mm, portraitSoftcover with flaps

In the 1980s, Hackney was one of the most deprived parts of the UK, its citizens ignored by Margaret Thatcher's new vision of Britain. But at Dalston's Rio - London's oldest community cinema - the Tape/Slide Newsreel Group was giving unemployed local youth a voice. Set up in 1982, it taught photography and sound-recording skills, and championed an alternative, left-wing perspective on Hackney life. In 2016, thousands of slides were found in a filing cabinet in the Rio's basement, a legacy of this ground-breaking project. The book presents the best of the slides that were shown in newsreels before the main feature at the Rio, alongside recollections of the Tape/Slide Newsreel Group participants. This important oral history places the photos in the cultural and political context of Hackney in the 1980s, meaning that, unlike some photobooks about East London, it is connected to the communities it portrays and remains true to the original radicalism behind the Tape/Slide Newsreel Group. There are introductory essays by Andrew Woodyatt (of The Rio), about the cinema's activities in the 1980s, and by Alan Denney (the photographer and local historian who digitised all the slides) putting the archive into the context of the contemporary movements in radical community photography, plus forewords from Michael Rosen and Zawe Ashton. The archive is presented chronologically and themes include: activism, parades and protest marches; art, culture, music and festivals; social problems and community action; street life and style; urban landscapes and dereliction; work and everyday life; young and old.

The Rough-Stuff Fellowship Archive volume 2. A second volume of photos and stories from the archive of the oldest off-road cycling club in the world. The original members of the RSF, founded in 1955, were the godfathers and godmothers of off-road cycling as we know it today - mountain bikes, gravel and bikepacking all follow in their tyre tracks. Since we published the first book, more that 25,000 new and unseen slides have come into the archive, dating from the 1920s to the 21st century. Volume 2 will have more photographers, more photos, more stories- and more bikes where bikes don't normally go!

VINTAGE ALPINE POSTCARDS celebrates our relationship with Europe's great mountain range. These dispatches from the Alps take us from men in bowler hats with stout ropes nonchalantly crawling over crevasses, through the gilded age of grand hotels and sleigh rides, to the modernist concrete infrastructure of mountaintop restaurants and cable-car stations - framing the changing the way we've experienced landscape and leisure over more than a hundred years. Underlying the Alpenkitsch is a serious examination of our relationship to nature and how we have used and abused the beauties of the natural world. Postcards travel through time as well as space, they arrive with messages from our former selves. But, like sun-burnished memories of holidays past, they do not necessarily correspond to reality. Postcard makers have always combined reality with artifice to conjure fantastic spaces, worlds in which the sky is always blue, the pine trees resplendent and there is always plenty of fresh powder. These skaters, skiers, sledgers and St Bernards will surprise and delight mountain aficionados, transporting them to a high altitude holiday wherever they are.

Jo Burt's comic strips detailing the adventures of Mint, a mountain-biking sheep, have amused and delighted readers for over three decades. Join Mint as he rides through an enchanting, bucolic world in which Death stalks the whaleback hills of the South Downs and Summer is a beautiful, capricious goddess. Cheerfully wistful, wilfully surreal and obsessively detailed, Mint Sauce covers the broad gamut of existence, with ungulates on bikes the backdrop to love, loss, death, the weather, joy, sadness and some more weather. Jo Burt has been drawing the Mint Sauce cartoon since 1987 and this is the first time it has ever been collected in a book. Featuring a new six-page story, a selection of classic strips from 1987-2023, calendar images, plus commentary and an introduction by Jo. 'Cartoons are an odd thing. On the one hand, they are brief, ephemeral, enjoyed for a short minute and thrown away. On the other, they can resonate and be stuck on the fridge, remembered, loved, kept close, and somehow become a tiny touchstone in your life.' 'Mint has always been about gently immersing yourself within the landscape and experiencing all of what that may bring. Mud, brambles, rain, the odd glimpse of sunshine, roots, nettles, and very immovable trees. And a necessary stillness. While others might see mountain biking as a way of owning something or smashing it Mint has always seen a ride as a way to disappear, dissolve into the hill and become an intimate and quiet part of the scenery.' - Jo Burt

The first book to celebrate the history, vintage style and visual heritage of the UK's outdoor clothing brands. When a British expedition reached the summit of Everest in 1953, it put British mountaineering at the top of the world. In the decades that followed, there was an explosion in the popular love of the outdoors, and outdoor clothing boomed. What hikers and mountaineers wore evolved from woolly jumpers, army surplus and cotton or tweed into highly technical specialist gear. Mostly responsible for this was a small group of climbers, who couldn't buy the products they needed and so decided to make them, sowing the seeds for the global brands - Berghaus, Craghoppers, Karrimor, Mountain Equipment, Rab, Sprayway and others - we know today. Still worn in the toughest environments imaginable, British outdoor clothing is also now ubiquitous - equally seen on hikers, everyday dog-walkers and vintage gear lovers in east London, Manchester's Northern Quarter or Tokyo. Mountain Style: British Outdoor Clothing 1953-2000 is the first illustrated book to tell this story, from the days of postwar austerity, through the colour explosion of the 1980s, to the 1990s, when outdoor clothing became embedded in football and rave subcultures and crossed into the mainstream. It celebrates the outsiders, the problem solvers and the mavericks: the manufacturing pioneers and the mountaineers who from humble beginnings went further, faster and higher -setting the template for what we all wear in the outdoors, and inadvertently creating style classics along the way. Alongside interviews with those at the birth of the brands, Mountain Style features vintage brochures, adverts and photos, plus new studio photography. From down jackets that summited Everest in 1953 to the first Gore-Tex and multicoloured fleeces, via logos, materials and more, it is an indispensable companion for outdoor and style lovers in the UK and beyond.

Founded in 1955, the Rough-Stuff Fellowship is the world's oldest off-road cycling club. Its archive contains thousands of stunning images, hand-drawn maps and documents - an unexpected treasure trove of incredible value and beauty that is now being brought to a wider public by Isola Press. The photos are evocative of a bygone age and a bygone style - a time when you might set off on a bike ride wearing a shirt and tie or a bobble hat, and no ride was complete without a stop to brew up some tea and smoke a pipe. They are also a record of intrepid adventures. RSF riders explored the Lake District, the Cairngorms, the Alps and further afield, and their exploits were beautifully documented by amateur and professional photographers. In their own very British way, these men and women were pioneers, pedalling and carrying their bikes where angels feared to tread. Mountain bikes, gravel bikes, adventure bikes all owe them a debt. This book celebrates their style and their spirit. It is a stunning visual resource of cycling heritage that will inspire new adventures.
