Hans Ulrich Obrist is a marathon runner of daily discussions, conversations and exchanges with artists, architects, scientists, thinkers and writers. The elements of language that he accumulates offers a generic lexicon in which he draws alternately words or expressions that are as many vocal punctuations as exclamations of style. Are you here? compiles for the first time the stamp drawings that Hans Ulrich Obrist has composed for years, sometimes organized in clusters or lists, to flirt with concrete poetry. Sometimes rendered illegible, these leitmotivs come to black almost the whole of the page as a result of performances close to trances. This practice, which can be likened to stereotypy, is an outlet for the author, in which he uses, in the manner of a shaman, the elements of language that are his own. Are you here? is introduced by Etel Adnan, poet and artist, who gives us keys to reading this parallel and yet central practice in the construction of one of the most important curators of our time.

de l’amour of Franck Leibovici is an attempt to organise the literary production of love at the digital age. Through four chapters, we dive into a combination of reader-voyeur in a shady world, totally connected to the epistolary traditions but radically upset by the immense production of contemporary text. One of the chapters of the book takes up the well-worn epistolary style of the “Spanish prisoner” or the “letter of Jerusalem” that has been rife since the 16th century in the West and is nowadays in the form of unwanted solicitations from young women who invade e-mail boxes. Here, the work of Franck Leibovici is to systematically answer his e-mails by imposing on himself a writing protocol - to which they bend - pushing this writing of fraud to unprecedented poetic extremes. Two other chapters find their raw material in a dating site and a forum for dating encounters. By searching these thousands of pages of sentimental autobiographies and organising them - without ever altering the original text - de l’amour offers us the heart-stories of today, in the spirit of those who live them. The last part of the book is the conversational analysis of an erotic amateur video found on the Internet. Here remains only a partition that allows to replay the action, an opera libretto of a sex scene during which the silences are millimetered and the groans reproducible to the identical. All these avatars of love portray the portrait of a generation that renews the codes of the meeting and the production of peripheral texts to these sentimental relationships. Through an ambitious “writing without writing” (Kenneth Goldsmith), Franck Leibovici signs his first book for Jean Boîte Éditions.

The Imaginary Sea confronts the interrelation between the arts, the sciences and the ways in which the modes of exposure of the natural world condition our relation to the subaquatic kingdom, at once dreamlike and endangered. "Far from a wholesale critical condemnation of anthropocentrism, the exhibition seeks to present a balanced, multifaceted perspective of our evolving relationship with the natural world. It operates if not in different temporalities, then, let’s say, different imaginaries. Akin to the emotional range of a Shakespearian comedy – or tragedy –, it intends to evoke joy, mystery, wonder, and, inevitably, melancholy as well as loss. Because, it goes virtually without saying, our relationship to the natural world, especially the sea and its enigmatic and unfathomable contents, is quite complex and fraught. " - Chris Sharp, curator of the exhibition

Miquel Barceló’s work is entwined with the intimate bond he has maintained with the sea since childhood, and which he continues to study and explore every day. This book offers an immersion into the profuse production of an artist who is passionate about fishing, swimming and diving, for whom the aquatic world remains the primordial environment, omnipresent in his work from his earliest paintings to his most recent creations. Between abysses and shores, ocean floors merge with the water’s surface, underwater caves turn into waves, the forms and fauna of the deep adjoin fossil compositions and seafood banquets. Featuring unseen contributions by Marie Darrieussecq and Chantal Thomas, an interview with Patrick Mauriès and a critical review by Björn Dahlström, Guillaume de Sardes and Stéphane Vacquier, Miquel Barceló: Oceanographer invites us to discover fifty years of artistic experimentations by this essential contemporary creator.

Over the years, Daniel Blaufuks (b. 1963, lives in Lisbon, Portugal) has engaged in a daily exercise of poetry, introspection, meditation. Each day, on a sheet of paper, he meticulously creates a composition combining his instant photographs, found images, documents and words in the languages he speaks (English, Portuguese, German, French), before stamping it with a number.Entitled The Days Are Numbered, this vast project resembles an imprecise daily notebook - Blaufuks refers to it as a “non-diary” - at the intersection between individual and collective memory. Nourished by a succession of states of mind, manifesting the eternal return of things, seasons, places or facts, The Days Are Numbered challenges our programmed amnesia. This book contains pages no. 1840 to 2206 from the year 2023.“A diary is also an act of resistance.”— Daniel Blaufuks

Between the late 1980s and 2020, from the end of the Reagan era to the beginning of the of the coronavirus, the artist Kenneth Goldsmith collected in the streets of New York hundreds of classified ads and other advertising posters. Hilarious, offbeat, absurd, even downright outrageous, sometimes breathtakingly beautiful, they all have in common their unpredictability as much as their total lack of utility. Borrowing either their codes to art brut, cubism or concrete poetry, they align in any case with the watchword of artistic modernity: to take an object and to divert it from any practical aim. Through this personal collection of “street poets and other visionaries”, Kenneth Goldsmith traces almost forty years of American history, questions the limits between what is art and what is not, and draws a history of the margins that is far from being as homogeneous as one might think.

Kim Jong Il Looking at Things is one of the most followed, shared and imitated monothematic Tumblr in recent years. Uninterrupted series of photographs of North Korea's Dear Leader looking at things, this series fascinates with its formal rigor and intensity.Without removing these photographs their primary function - to raise Kim Jong Il to an iconic rank - this series forces a shift in the purpose of propaganda. The icon changes to taxonomy, the viewer is being watched, and the meaning of this images breaks away.Accompanied by an essay by Marco Bohr entitled Looking at Kim Jong Il Looking at Things, the book reveals the springs of our fascination for these accumulated images on the Internet - these memes - analyzing how a series of apparently innocent photographs become viral and attractive. By publishing Kim Jong Il Looking at Things in the collection FOLLOW ME, Collecting Images Today, JBE Books continues to highlight another art scene, which establishes the online collector as a creator, and the ephemeral in the perennial.

Designed for screens and most popular on the Internet, Hyper Geography is an arrangement of images that immerses us in a unique digital and mental landscape, designed to be repeated ad infinitum. The artist concieved with Jean Boîte Éditions a monumental landscape in a book. Pages are not to be tuned anymore but unfold over four meters long, like the map of a new unexplored world. On the other side of the book, an unreleased essay by Nicolas Thély illuminates the challenges of this development and our fascination for this territory. With Alain Roger and Jean Baudrillard, digital creation and mental landscapes are the subject of an aesthetic quest that completes the visual exploration of this Hyper Geography.

#artselfie opens with an incisive remark by Douglas Coupland, who warns us that ‘“Selfies are mirrors we can freeze. (. ) Selfies allow us to see how others look at themselves in a mirror making their modeling face when nobody’s around . except these days, everybody’s around everywhere all the time. ”#artselfie emerged in 2012, right as the recent photographic phenomenon known as the selfie reached it’s tipping point. It was subsequently activated by New York based collective DIS, as an aggregated mode of art-tourism and documentation. These selfies and their dialogue with art are an opportunity to revisit fundamental questions such as: if art is a mirror, what happens when we place ourselves between it and the camera? The traditional trajectory from photographer to subject via the camera has been subverted, and with it, the nature of images and our perception of them. The #artselfie makes every participant both protagonist and collaborator, consumer and producer. Including an introduction by Douglas Coupland (author of Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture and ruthless observer of contemporary society) and a discussion between Simon Castets (director of the Swiss Institute in New York and co-founder of the 89+ project) and DIS, #artselfie allows us to experience how significant — and seductive — this viral phenomenon is.

"I used to be an artist; then I became a poet; then a writer. Now when asked, I simply refer to myself as a word processor," Kenneth Goldsmith (born 1961) writes in "Theory." The acclaimed conceptual poet, who is the founder and editor of UbuWeb, a professor of Uncreative Writing at the University of Pennsylvania and the former host of a weekly radio show at WFMU, was also appointed MoMA's very first Poet Laureate in 2013. Goldsmith may be a word processor, but he has also proven to be a highly influential literary figure over the past two decades. His latest publication, "Theory," is a series of 500 texts-from poems to aphoristic thoughts to short stories-published on 500 sheets of paper and gathered unbound as a paper ream. This artist's book is the first of Goldsmith's publications to consolidate his diverse practices-from the radio to the Internet to his "uncreative" writing-in a single volume.

A gesture reiterated: François?Xavier Courrèges chooses a photograph of a young man from the 1970s or 1980s, which figures among the many he has collected from specialist dealers. He matches it with a piece of wallpaper from the same period. He then affixes the image to the wallpaper with glue so that it forms a frame along its borders. Through this collection of portraits, François?Xavier Courrèges restores forgotten lives and lifestyles. He unearths these pictures from their historic limbo. These erotic photos do not feature in the major history of images. They are absent from the museums, public collections and artistic institutions. And undoubtedly, the viewer who watches Vague souvenir will also remember it comes from him — it is also his history. But the memory remains hazy and the questions are sentenced to melancholy: what do we know of these boys? What can we do against time that passes and the accompanying relentless force of forgetfulness?

1 the Road is a book written using a car as a pen. Ross Goodwin is not a poet. As a prominent Artificial Intelligence creator, he outfitted a Cadillac car with a surveillance camera, a GPS unit, a microphone and a clock, all connected to a portable AI writing machine that fed from these input data in real time. Together, they traveled from New York to New Orleans, in an experimental automation of the American literary road trip. As they drove, a manuscript emerged line by line from the machine’s printer on long scrolls of receipt paper that filled the car’s rear seats over the course of their journey. 1 the Road offers the first real book written by an AI, which captures us from the first page, when the journey begins:“It was seven minutes to ten o’clock in the morning, and it was the only good thing that had happened. ”Rooted in the traditions of American literature, gonzo journalism, and the latest research in artificial neural networks, 1 the Road imposes a new reflexion on the place and authority of the author in a new era of machines.

Peanuts minus Schulz : Distributed Labor as a Compositional Practice brings together a selection of comic strips home-brewed by over one thousand deskilled microworkers from twenty different countries commissioned through digital labor services. The operation consists in the reproduction of iconic comic strips using a number of variations devised by Ilan Manouach. Artist and researcher Ilan Manouach advances conceptual comics as an artistic practice devised to disrupt the myth of the solitary genius through the glorification of craftsmanship and fictions of artistic ethos and integrity. Conceptual comics aims to distance source artworks to make the claim for an expanded agency, in this case for the sake of microworkers as a whole. The operation Peanuts minus Schulz reveals the mechanisms at work behind creativity in the making and the potential of the art form in flux when it is informed by the peripheral vision of the interconnected precariat.

A revelatory, long-overdue survey of the bold and explicit feminist painting of Betty Tompkins, from the late 1960s to the present. This first monographic work on the New York–based feminist painter Betty Tompkins (born 1945) presents around 50 paintings and drawings made during her career. Tompkins is best known for her large-format Fuck Paintings, a series launched in 1969 depicting close-up sex, the source images of which are taken from pornographic magazines. The series is famous for having been censored many times. In this and other series, such as the Cunt Paintings and Pussy Paintings, Tompkins uses a cold and restricted palette of black, white and gray for the pornographic images that she appropriates. Stylistically close to photorealism, the images are cropped and produced with an airbrush on pastel backgrounds. Sometimes the artist covers up the image with misogynistic texts. Although her paintings were rarely shown, due to their explicit content, Tompkins has influenced a younger generation. She has not ceased to question persistently since the 1970s what determines the codes of representation of female bodies. This work thus takes on a new dimension within the framework of the recent #MeToo movement. In this essential volume, collages and drawings reveal Tompkins’ work processes, highlighting her grid work, a major form of minimalism and formalism. Among the works on paper, the 2014 Photo Drawings series is unveiled here for the first time.

Sunset Cocktails is an invitation to transform contemplation into a sensory experience of assimilation of the world to literally drink the sunset. Based on Guillaume Aubry’s esthetic research on the artistic and mystical yet daily figure of the sunset, Sunset Cocktails presents 12 cocktails devised by mixologist Sterling Hudson. From the dazzling Regulus, whose saffron ice cube spreads its light in the vermouth, to Grand Soir, a political sunset that infuses the charcoal into the vodka. In a luminous afterword, Ryoko Sekiguchi awakens our senses and our bodies to receive fascination for an aesthetic and gustatory experience. The circular outline of the sun becomes visible to the naked eye. The blinding light softens and ceases to burn the pupil. The heavenly body melts and dilutes its bitterness into a sensorial experience of the world. Astonishment of an esthetic sunset.
