The Great Hunger in nineteenth-century Ireland was a major human tragedy of modern times. Almost a million perished and a further two million emigrated in the wake of potato blight and economic collapse. Acute famine also gripped the Scottish Highlands at the same time, causing misery, hardship and distress. The story of that lesser known human disaster is told in this prize-winning and internationally acclaimed book. The author describes the classic themes of highland and Scottish history, including the clearances, landlordism, crofting life, emigration and migration in a subtle and intricate reconstruction based on a wide range of sources. This book should appeal to all those with an interest in Scottish history, the emigration of Scottish people and the Highland Clearances.

Francis Hutcheson (1694–1745) has traditionally been celebrated for his moral philosophy, which greatly influenced David Hume and other thinkers of the Enlightenment. But he was also the founder of modern philosophical aesthetics, the source of many of Adam Smith’s economic ideas (Smith was one of his students) and the major philosophical influence on eighteenth-century North America, especially on the abolitionist movement. For these reasons, British, American and European philosophers have reassessed his philosophy, and this volume provides a comprehensive and rounded collection of his essays on all aspects of his thinking. The essays dealing with aesthetics and ethics are drawn from Hutcheson’s four Treatises and Reflections upon Laughter written in Dublin 1725–28. Essays dealing with his legal, political and economic ideas are taken from A System of Moral Philosophy (published posthumously in 1755) and from A Short Introduction to Moral Philosophy (1747).Professor Robin Downie provides an analytical introduction to Hutcheson’s thought and locates it in the culture and chronology of Hutcheson’s life and times.

This collection of innovative essays celebrates the New Town of Edinburgh over the 250 years since its original creation. The contributing authors discuss the intellectual, economic and political contexts which provided the impetus for the city of Edinburgh to expand north of the Old Town, and analyse the New Town’s unique architectural status in terms of its size, monumentality and degree of preservation. For centuries, Scotland has pursued innovation, improvement, commerce and contact with England and the Continent; and since medieval times it has been an urbanising land of planned towns. This book reflects on the constantly changing dialogue between Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns, from the eighteenth century to the present time, as the city became increasingly commercialised. It also compares Edinburgh’s New Town with more recent new towns elsewhere, notably nineteenth-century Dunedin in New Zealand and Scotland’s planned new-town movement of the twentieth century. The age of conservation is another of the central themes.By drawing on different approaches to the new town phenomenon in Scotland, this volume pays tribute to Scotland’s vibrant capital, and offers insights into new research on Scotland’s urban development.
