Bradford’s figures swim, float and wander through the dark and dreamy landscapes of their canvases

Since the 1970s, painter Katherine Bradford has unapologetically blazed her own path in the art world: painting daily and building a community of like-minded artists in both Maine and New York. Bradford paints with a formal inventiveness and a shifting sense of figure and ground, giving narrative weight to her characters who may appear as heroes or lovers, families or couples, businessmen or isolated individuals. Her chromatic scenes, painted in many transparent layers of acrylic, transmit a light-filled quality and offer metaphorical possibilities as they veer between humor, pathos and abstraction. This reference monograph of her work features an essay by London-based art critic Allie Biswas that reflects on the metaphysical nature of Bradford’s work, an interview with fellow artist and writer Daniel Gerwin, a narrative biography text by her children, Laura and Arthur Bradford, that offers a personal look at the artist’s life and work, and an overview essay by Austrian curator Sandro Droschl. The book compiles over 100 artworks surveying Bradford’s paintings from 2015 until today, focusing on her recent series entitled Swimmers and Mother Paintings dealing with her own vision of motherhood and womanhood.Katherine Bradford (born 1942) lives and works in New York City and Brunswick, Maine. She has exhibited at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum and most recently in a solo exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art, which traveled to the Frye Museum in Seattle. Bradford was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 and a Joan Mitchell Fellowship in 2012.

Reyes’ lush and colorful paintings, featuring human beings in harmony with nature, disavow an anthropocentric, Eurocentric worldview

A self-taught artist, Emma Reyes (1913–2003) made an impression on such luminaries as Lola Álvarez Bravo, Gabriel García Márquez, Frida Kahlo, André Lhote, Enrico Prampolini and Diego Rivera during her nomadic life. This first publication on her artwork is an introductory overview to the unique practice she developed from the mid-1940s to the early 2000s in Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Colombia and France. Her work can be associated with the aesthetics of 20th-century Magic Realism, adopting a formal vocabulary that combined elements of post-Cubist and pre-Columbian art. She drew on memories of her journeys across South America in the early 1940s to depict individuals set among lush vegetation. Featuring her signature spidery lines and colorful compositions, the human being and surrounding jungle are one, telling an ancestral story of kinship. Far from calling for a return to the wild, she aimed to reject the anthropocentric worldview and return humanity to its rightful place in dialogue with its environment.

A superb facsimile of Dorothy Ianonne’s 1970 comic-book tale of censorship, sexuality and female autonomy

As much as Love and Eros have defined my work since its beginnings, so too has censorship, or its shadow, accompanied it," recalls Dorothy Iannone (born 1933) in her introduction to this facsimile publication of her legendary The Story of Bern, [or] Showing Colors. First published by Iannone and her then companion Dieter Roth in 1970, in an edition of 500, the book documents the censorship of Iannone's work The (Ta)Rot Pack (1968–69) and the subsequent removal of all his works by Roth, from a collective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern. For his exhibition titled Freunde, Friends, d'Fründe, legendary curator Harald Szeemann invited Karl Gerstner, Roth, Daniel Spoerri and André Thomkins to exhibit artist friends; Roth chose Iannone. The censorship of Iannone, and Roth's protest, eventually led to Harald Szeemann's resignation as the director of the institution. Telling the story of this act of censorship as well as the context of the exhibition in Bern and its iteration in a non-censored version in Düsseldorf, The Story of Bern is emblematic of Iannone's distinctive, explicit and comic-book style, and of her openness about sexuality and the strengthening of female autonomy.

Variations on the face: downtown legend Kenny Scharf’s permutational exploration of character

This new book by cult artist Kenny Scharf (born 1958) debuts his latest body of work, MOODZ. Comprising more than 330 circular paintings of faces—each one different—this ensemble gives form to a population of moods, feelings, expressions and colors. Scharf explains that the characters reflect aspects of his own personality: some days he needs to release his aggressive energy and they may reflect his anger; other faces reflect his exuberance and love of painting. Organized chromatically, the publication gathers the entire series of MOODZ, as well as exhibition views and documentation related to the project. It features an essay by American gallerist and cultural figure Jeffrey Deitch. A poster (28 x 21.5 inches)—on which all the faces are reproduced together as if to form a color chart—accompanies the publication.

Dream-inspired book covers for imaginary pulp novels by Americana connoisseur-bricoleur Jim Shaw

Since the 1970s, American artist Jim Shaw (born 1952) has used his multimedia artistic practice as a means of exploring and exploiting pop-culture iconography. This publication focuses on one of the key series in Shaw’s corpus, in which he draws inspiration from the Anglo-American graphic design and illustrative tradition of cheap paperback books. Inspired by the artist's intense dreaming life, the Paperback Covers series (1996–2013) recreates the lurid imagery associated with pulp novels, with vertical canvases that depict fantastical and irreverent imagery: in one, a werewolf in suspenders is struck by an oncoming 18-wheeler; in another, a line of chorus girls dance in front of a vampire and a woman in red as the couple is in engulfed by flames. Though these “books” bear no text, Shaw’s paintings evoke exciting narratives within a single image. All the inventoried Paperback Covers are collected in this softcover volume along with a text by Charlie Fox.

Subtle interventions with humble materials: 25 years of performance art from the European duo

This volume provides insight into the collaborations of French artist Marie Cool (born 1961) and Italian artist Fabio Balducci (born 1964), offering the first comprehensive overview of the performance duo’s action-oriented works since 1995.

A comprehensive overview of the French artist's investigation into objects, value and art forms

Paris-based artist Isabelle Cornaro (born 1974) works across mediums such as installation, painting, sculpture, video, wall painting and drawing to investigate themes of representation, perceptual experience and reproduction. Cornaro also explores the translation of forms and languages, for example an old master painting into a 3D installation, a film into a graphic score or the vocabulary of Minimalism into a more emotional language. Informed by her studies of Renaissance and classical aesthetics, Cornaro is often drawn to the still life genre, constructing her objects in a manner that invites a multiplicity of vantage points.Ranging across Cornaro’s manifold oeuvre, this monograph includes essays by art critic Tim Griffin and art historian Cécile Debray; interviews with curator Fabrice Stroun and editor Clément Dirié; as well as comprehensive descriptive texts by art critic Benjamin Thorel.

The first monograph on the influential Romanian artist and teacher

This is the first comprehensive monograph on the Romanian-born, UK-based artist Paul Neagu (1938–2004), whose oeuvre transcends traditional artistic disciplines, and who was for several decades an important source of inspiration for young artists, curators and intellectuals. Neagu's philosophical approach led him to push the boundaries of the Western abstract tradition, which he first discovered clandestinely in Communist Romania. He continued to explore abstraction after relocating to London in 1971, where he became an influential teacher at the Slade, Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College (among his students were Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whiteread).Neagu's practice included performance, sculpture, drawing, painting, video, photography and poetry. He often promoted physical engagement with his more tactile works, underlining one of his enduring aims: to refute what he perceived as the primacy of visuality in art.

A compact introduction to the LA conceptualist’s deadpan explorations of the American popular imaginary

Part of the same milieu as Allen Ruppersberg, Guy de Cointet and Bas Jan Ader (with whom he edited the magazine Landslide in 1969–70), William Leavitt (born 1941) is a decisive figure of the Los Angeles art scene. Through his installations and videos, drawings and paintings, play and sound performances, Leavitt reexamines the production of the Western imaginary as imposed by the "Hollywood factory." Also at play in his exploration of “the theater of the ordinary” is the coexistence of nature and artifice, exemplified by such landmark works as Forest Sound (1970) and California Patio (1972).This publication offers a retrospective overview of Leavitt’s art from the early 1970s to his most recent works and installations. It highlights thematic resonances ranging from science-fiction to the notion of décor, and gives a prominent place to his writings and scripts for plays and videos.

A meditation on consumerism, from an artist known for her longtime engagement with the fashion world

Swiss conceptual artist Sylvie Fleury (born 1961) juxtaposes avant-garde garments by designers such as Thierry Mugler, Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier with an iconic work of Minimalism by Walter de Maria. Showcasing them side-by-side in the Bechtler Foundation (Zurich) window, Fleury transforms relics of consumerism into historical objects worthy of display in the art world. It is also an unprecedented insight into the artist's eccentric 1990s fashion collection.

Surveying the decades-long oeuvre of an artist whose multidisciplinary practice is interwoven with the written word

A key representative of conceptual painting, French Swiss artist Agnès Thurnauer (born 1962) incorporates writing into her paintings, sculptures and installations, which investigate the power of language, interrogating how we give form to the act and process of thinking, and questions related to art, politics, the body and self-investigation.

A total environment-cum-woodland utopia created by an all-star team of “mad sculptors” led by Jean Tinguely

Created by sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925–91) in collaboration with Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) and their artist friends Bernhard Luginbühl, Larry Rivers, Jesús Rafael Soto and Daniel Spoerri, among others, Le Cyclop is a monumental sculptural work that dominates the forest of Milly-la-Forêt outside Paris. Elaborated upon for three decades, the collective project generated a total environment. Its exterior presents an immense head bedecked in sparkling mirrors, built almost entirely from found and industrial materials. Its interior houses a surprising universe punctuated with sound sculptures, a small automatic theater, machinery with scrap metal gears as well as homages to Duchamp, Klein and Schwitters. This definitive publication tells in detail the story of Le Cyclop, gathering new essays by an array of international art historians and scholars, an extensive chronology as well as remarkable archival materials.

Dan Walsh makes a painting: a fascinating account of the acclaimed abstract painter’s process

With this publication, New York–based painter, printmaker, bookmaker and sculptor Dan Walsh (born 1960) allows the reader to enter his studio and follow his idiosyncratic artistic process. By showing different stages of painting—until the very final one—of a group of 12 recent works (2019–22), he offers a way to understand how a painting is built, how colors and forms merge together, how photography is a precious tool for painterly thinking and how composition and structure are organic processes, even if the result in his case is fundamentally geometrical and grid-based. In his essay, critic and curator Bob Nickas traces the genealogy of such unveiling of the painting process from de Kooning to the present and analyzes in depth Walsh's specific way of making a painting.

Vibrant, colorful and explicit, Iannone’s work is a touchstone for 60 years of feminist art and theory

For more than six decades, Dorothy Iannone (1933–2022) represented ecstatic love, the union of gender, feeling and pleasure. Today, her oeuvre is widely recognized as one of the most provocative and fruitful bodies of work in recent decades in terms of the liberalization of female sexuality, and political and feminist issues. A narrative element fed with personal mythologies, experiences and feelings runs through all of her work, unified by her distinctive colorful and graphic style. As Fluxus artist Robert Filliou declared in 1972, “she is a freedom fighter, and a forceful and dedicated artist, skillfully blending imagery and text, beauty and truth. Her aim is no less than human liberation.” This publication sheds new light on the legendary artist’s practice by dealing specifically with her idiosyncratic takes on performativity and transdisciplinarity. New essays by Alison Gingeras, Ana Mendoza Aldana and Joanna Zielinska, together with a selection of texts written by Iannone, offer new approaches to celebrate her work and life.

Embodying her visionary philosophy, Yoko Ono's landmark artist's book is a companion for life

Thus she continuously shares with us her vision and philosophy toward life: one that is made of pivotal experiences, unstoppable optimism and a love for the other. Following several volumes that have proved to be life companions for many, Everything in the Universe Is Unfinished reflects on her most recent feelings through a delicate interweaving of poems, aphorisms, short stories and drawings.Born in Tokyo in 1933, Yoko Ono moved to New York in the mid-1950s, where she quickly became a critical link between the American and Japanese avant-gardes, participating in Fluxus and achieving new idioms in performance and art. Her boundary-pushing early works include the pioneering performance work Cut Piece and her book of collected conceptual instructions, Grapefruit (both 1964). Ono’s artworks and films are widely exhibited internationally and are included in numerous prestigious museum and private collections. In 2009 she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Venice Biennale. Ono’s groundbreaking work greatly influenced the international development of conceptual art, performance art, and experimental film and music.

Reminiscent of modernist sculpture and theatrical displays, Proenza’s subtle and sophisticated installations propose a space for dreamlike thinking

Published on the occasion of her solo exhibition at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne, this monograph on French Colombian artist Gina Proenza (born 1994) encompasses her sculptural work drawing from specific narratives blending anthropological research, ancestral tales and literary influences. Through playful forms and theatrical displays, Proenza creates a sophisticated yet sensual visual language.

A manual for Zen meditation, self-consciousness and intellectual speculation

This artist’s book by Bea Schlingelhoff (born 1971) gathers together 366 capping phrases used for koan practice, a fundamental part of Zen Buddhism. Schlingelhoff invites us to think about the contents of the phrases, but also to reflect on such a practice in our contemporary times.

Cheng's genre-defying practice challenges our perceptions of environmental change and the role of technology in society

Carl Cheng (born 1942) first developed his art practice in Southern California in the 1960s amid a booming postwar aerospace industry, political unrest and an interdisciplinary art scene. In 1966 he incorporated his studio as John Doe Co., and from then on created sculptural "products" that reflect his conception of technology as an artistic tool. Originally recognized for his photographic sculptures, his inventive lexicon includes "art tools" employed in the production of ephemeral artworks, "nature machines" that anticipate an artificial world shaped by humans, kinetic installations and public art intended to reach broad audiences and question the relevance of art institutions.Nature Never Loses surveys six decades of Cheng’s prescient, genre-defying work and accompanies the eponymous traveling exhibition organized by the Contemporary Austin. It is the definitive guide to Cheng’s career, including a detailed overview of his most impressive works and an abundance of never-before-seen archival material. This book was published in conjunction with The Contemporary Austin

A central figure of the New York art scene of the 1960s and ’70s, Castoro experimented in painting, sculpture and performance: subversive even for her time

As a self-titled "paintersculptor," Rosemarie Castoro (1939–2015) had a singular take on Minimal and Conceptual art. She initially explored the potential of abstract and monochrome painting, going on to expand their sphere and modes of operation to incorporate the body, and even the exhibition space, thanks to decisive sculptural experimentation, organic metal and Masonite shapes, street works and architectural interventions. In so doing, she distorted elementary forms through her haptic, integrated and sexualized treatment. Together with Christine Kozlov and Adrian Piper, she was one of the women artists featured in Ursula Meyer’s anthology of Conceptual art in 1972. Lucy R. Lippard included her in her famous Numbers exhibitions in 1969—championing Castoro as having "subverted or overridden Minimalism on its own turf." Archival documentation as well as new exhibition views and images of works complete this volume, published with MAMCO Geneva, to make it the most comprehensive monograph available on the artist.

Chiang’s meditative process creates detailed paintings with intricate webs of forms and vibrant ceramics fluctuating between fragility and strength

New York–based artist Julia Chiang (born 1978) is known for her paintings and ceramics, which use abstract compositions and organic forms to evoke a connection to the vastness of the universe. Her bulbous ceramics transport us through their sensual shapes and her organic imagery borrows from the physical—medical scans, internal body liquids and environments—as well as the psychological. A sense of connectivity, of the body in nature and the environment that surrounds us, has always been part of the artist’s approach and is fundamental to her work. “I’m always interested in our bodies as vessels, what we contain and what we cannot. All that comes out of us, all that is within us,” says Chiang. This first monograph on Chiang presents her work from the late 1990s to the present and features an essay by Eugenie Tsai, writer and former senior curator at the Brooklyn Museum.

Hyperrealistic, mesmerizing Los Angeles landscapes that highlight the city’s beauty and allure alongside its urban decay and materialism

Sayre Gomez (born 1982) is known for his semi-fictionalized and photorealistic paintings depicting his hometown of Los Angeles. At once beautiful and dystopian, the paintings utilize different techniques such as airbrushing and stenciling, similar to those used to paint Hollywood movie sets. Various signifiers are quintessentially Southern Californian, such as the strip malls filled with commercial business signage as well as large advertising billboards and cartoon figures. The flawless execution and luminescence of Gomez’s canvases, along with shifts between hard and sharp focus, are painterly reflections on the digital flattening and blurring of life and culture through screen-based technology. These works tackle issues such as nostalgia, authenticity and simulation. The first major survey dedicated to his practice, which also includes sculpture, video work and installation, this reference monograph on Gomez spans works created between 2016 and the present.
