Mr. Ebert discusses the relation of art and politics and some of the common perspectives which unite filmmakers of different cultures and of diverse artistic and political temperaments.Among the subjects of these wide-ranging talks are: the choice between popular and experimental forms of narrative; the filmmaker's responsibility to society; blacks and women in the movies; the rise of third world filmmaking; Hollywood's left and progressives; the conditions of filmmaking in different societies; the challenges of independent production; different forms of censorship, from the U.S. to Poland; trends in criticism and auteur theory to feminism; the power of the reviewer.

Millions of Americans enjoy liberties off and on the job that were pioneered by a working class organization that few of them are familiar with—the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).The standard of living for most working Americans was grim when the IWW was founded in 1905. Wages were low, housing squalid, civil liberties limited, safety regulations nonexistent, and job security tenuous. Employers routinely denied their workers the right to unionize, much less to strike or picket. Few major labor disputes ended without death playing a hand.In Solidarity Forever, a score of IWWs tell how they fought against these injustices while advocating a new economic system in which production would be geared for the public good rather than for private profit. They speak at length of the life and culture of a modern working class during its formative years, often touching on historic labor struggles as well as more humble local conflicts. Told with vigor and humor, these first-hand accounts attest to the IWW passion for mass education, popular culture, and grass roots democracy, and they reveal an IWW far more ideologically sophisticated than is generally acknowledged.Historical essays preface these personal stories and place them in the context of the IWW commitment to civil liberties, women's rights, organizing the unorganized, and racial equality. An oral history based on interviews done for the award-winning documentary, The Wobblies, by filmmakers Stewart Bird and academy-award-winning director Deborah Shaffer, with historical introductions to each section of interviews by labor historian Dan Georgakas, co-editor of the monumental Encyclopedia of the American Left.

When People and Folks first appeared, William Julius Wilson called it "the most insightful book ever written on inner-city gangs" and "required reading for anyone seeking an understanding of gang activity in our large urban centers." It was also praised by Ron Huff as "a vicarious journey into the underbelly of a rustbelt city, the breeding ground of gangs—Underclass America." This gritty and poignant portrait of gang members has become a major contribution to the academic literature. The first edition of People and Folks broke new ground, influencing a generation of researchers. This expanded edition also offers provocative new insights into race and class, challenging accepted theories with fresh data from one of the most extensive studies ever undertaken of street gangs in a single city. In particular, Hagedorn questions prevailing assumptions about gang violence, drug use, and the cultural differences between the inner-city "underclass" and the suburban middle classes. Unlike many other gang studies, he explores the nature of gender for both male and female gangs members and examines the differences between male and female gangs.

Jan Myrdal, the son of Nobel Laureates Gunnar and Alva Myrdal, has become widely regarded as Sweden's most important writer and intellectual, with a national importance possible only in a country like Sweden. When he had a heart attack a few years ago, the largest daily newspaper, a sensational tabloid, Expressen, had its front page completely filled with a headline about it. On his 60th birthday cabinet ministers, labor leaders, religious leaders as well as writers and artists came to his door with gifts (he lives two hours from Stockholm). In this country, he is known mainly for his writing about China (Harrison Salisbury called Report from a Chinese Village a social classic) and Confessions of a Disloyal European, which the NY Times Book Review chose as "one of ten books of particular excellence and significance in 1968" in its Christmas book issue. But in Sweden he is the author of over 60 volumes of political commentary, art and literary criticism, history, novels, autobiography, poetry and plays, and has also curated exhibitions and regularly does documentaries for Swedish TV (recently a 13 part series on the history of political and social caricature, also printed as a coffee table book). Most recent volumes in Sweden are his collected art criticism and a huge art book "Five Years of Freedom," on a period in the 1830s when there was press freedom in France. Myrdal also curated an exhibition on the subject and was recently awarded the coveted honor, Chevalier des arts et des lettres, by the French government.Coming to terms with the third world has been a continuing concern of Jan Myrdal's books since the publication of Report from a Chinese Village, which Harrison Salisbury has called "a social classic."India Waits is an impassioned view of today's India—its complex origins and future prospects. It was written over a period of twenty years in which the author returned many times to the same places, the same people and the same questions.Myrdal visits the poorest villages and the largest cities, stays in a peasant guerilla camp and visits a model capitalist town. His talks with peasants and politicians, revolutionaries and capitalists show an India which will be strange and often shocking to readers accustomed to viewing India through British eyes.Myrdal confronts Western distortions of Indian culture and history; as he traces them back to the first encounters of East and West, both are revealed in the process. Here the people of India are encountered with an excitement of discovery made possible only by the greatest respect.

Forsaking Our Children is the story of what happens when an activist sociologist—and former welfare rights organizer—is hired to reform a child welfare system. Written for social workers and activists as well as for academics and policy makers, this book combines often gut-wrenching personal stories and a compelling narrative of a hard-fought reform struggle with a critical history of child welfare. Despite today's adverse conditions, Hagedorn argues against defeatism, proposing a concrete and attainable blueprint for reform of the U.S. child welfare system. How and why our child welfare system fails children and their families are central questions of this book. Chilling stories of these failures are combined with a new theoretical perspective which shows how welfare bureaucracies adapted to changing political conditions, substituting punitive interventions for the delivery of needed services. Hagedorn critically examines the history of public welfare from the 19th century through the New Deal, the Anti-Poverty Programs of the sixties, and the "discover" of child abuse in the seventies. The logical conclusion of this history is the current emphasis on removing children from their families and the creation of a new system of orphanages. Applying lessons learned from restructuring modern businesses to the reform of welfare bureaucracies, Hagedorn argues that genuine reform does not involve either massive cutbacks or infusion of new funds.

Female Gangs in America begins by reprinting classic, and hard to find, essays that chronicle the earliest research on girls, gender, and gangs. Included in this section are essays by Thrasher, Rice, Brown, and Quicker as well as a retrospective piece by Fishman on African American girls in Chicago gangs of the sixties. The theoretical issues exposed by a focus on the role of gender in gang research are explored in essays by Giordano, Campbell, Messerschmidt and Curry. These works explore the degree to which gangs are sites for "doing gender" while also revisiting of the emancipation versus victimization theories as they apply to young women's crime. Other important issues explored in the collection include the role of economic marginalization in girls membership in gangs as well as an understanding of the family life of girls in gangs. Ethnic and geographic variations in girls experience of gang membership are also reviewed in essays by Moore, Portillos, Joe and Chesney-Lind.A consideration of girls and violence is inescapable when girls' membership in gangs is considered in a series of important papers by Campbell, Deschenes and Esbensen, and Hagedorn and Devitt. Finally, the media construction of girl gang membership, as part of the larger backlash against girls and women's issues, is explored in a concluding essay by Chesney-Lind.This book establishes a new high water mark for research on gender and gangs, rejecting simplistic over-generalizations in favor of detailed and thoughtful considerations of the ways in which girls' lives, girls' troubles, and girls' gang membership are inextricably connected. The focus on girls and gang membership also illuminates important similarities and differences between the female and male gangs, thereby building a richer understanding of the role of gender and gangs in the lives young people on the racial, political and economic margins of this country.
