Barbara Ann Quinlan was born in the sheltered world of upstate New York in the 1950s. When the family moved to California, she easily slipped into the embodiment of a 1960's wild child. Yet far from a typical story of sex, drugs and rock and roll, she was to travel extensively in Europe and Israel, study under the innovative and influential theatre director, Jerzy Grotowski, have affairs with high-profile actors, and an icon of Israeli music before his tragic demise. Hers is a story of triumphs and tragedies, mountain-top joy and deepest pits of misery, outlandish behaviors, destructive compulsions, foolishness and ultimately, miracles. Urging her through it all was the relentless pursuit of what she was hungrily seeking; love, peace, and her place in the world.

However, at age eighteen, she commences her registered nurse training at King's College Hospital, London, to escape from a difficult home life and become independent.Training in midwifery, tropical diseases, and cardiothoracic nursing, her love of art and music mingle with her nursing life, as she sings to the dying, makes Christmas decorations for the wards, and turns her room in the nurses' home into a miniature art studio. She emigrates to Australia in 1977.From nursing leprosy patients at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London, to suturing wounds on Heron Island, Queensland, Hazel writes candid stories of triumph, tragedy and hilarity, and expounds the close human connections that are formed between nurse and patient.

At the age of 57, Peter Keating set out to sail, single-handed, across the Atlantic. It was a lifelong dream of a lifelong sailor and though it was to be a solo journey, his waking and sleeping hours were spent in the 'company' of his memories and erstwhile companions and friends. From Werner and crocodile surfing, to Gerhardt and the Gulag. From Charlie of Morova Lagoon, to Fred from Fransesca. Their stories, along with the Mafiosa of Malta, Leo from the Chesapeake, the myth of Napoleon on St Helena and many more besides, were weaved into Peter's as they hauled along, day after day, from horizon to horizon on the voyage from Norfolk, Virginia to Lisbon, Portugal. They were there to help and inspire him and, when he was caught in the middle of Hurricane Barry, to ensure he reached out and survived. When at his lowest ebb, along came the ghost of Sam, a friendly old sailor who kept Peter entertained through the long, lonely hours of the dog watch.Together they fill the pages of this book, yet this is not simply a sailing log of a trip from the New World to the Old. This is a story of individuals who have all lived on the edge. It shows what happens when you are brave enough to push yourself beyond your current boundaries and above all, go out on a limb. Yes, it will help you to understand more about deep oceaning, its joys and terrors, but perhaps it will also help the adventurer inside you to reflect on how you would cope in similar circumstances. Ultimately, this is not just Peter Keating's journey alone, but the journey of us all when we go out on the edge - to peer over any horizon - and to finally emerge the better for having left our safe harbour.

This collection of fascinating reminisces captures the school days of those girls who attended the Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC) in Armidale, New South Wales during the period 1936 to 1964. Were their experiences to occur today they would surely cause gasps of horror. Not that there was anything immoral or illegal happening, the standards of accommodation, meals and uniform requirements were simply of their time; a time which included the war and post-war years with its attendant shortages, rationing and family losses. Despite the strictures, what shines through is the abiding emotional attachment the Old Girls have for their school and the friendships made, as well as the school's emphasis on encouraging individual strengths and talents, its stress on the belief that women should pursue a career and its complete lack of social snobbery. There are tales of girls 'getting up to no good' and as well as being amusing, these forays into naughtiness indicate that spirit and risk-taking cannot be extinguished, whatever the prevailing conditions. Ultimately it was these very conditions that provided a test of character and resilience. Ask PLC Old Girls of the 1936-1964 period what they think of it all and they'll laugh, give a shrug and say, as they do in some of the memories within this book, 'We survived.'

On the 25th August 1895, Ernest Alfred Hall was born into a pioneering Australian family that lived on a 313-acre property called 'Cloverdale' near the hamlet of Beech Forest, south of the Otway Ranges, some 200 kilometres south west of Melbourne, Victoria. As a child, it seemed he would be destined for the life of a farmer in a country that was just realising its independence through Federation, yet his path was to be diverted by the cataclysmic events that befell Europe and the British Empire. So it was, that one month short of his 20th birthday, Ernest caught the train to Melbourne and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. At only 5' 3" he was never going to be the biggest soldier in the army, but as his father said to him, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, son, but the size of the fight in the dog." Like so many, Ernest Hall embarked for the war to end all wars. Unlike so many, his letters and records survived. This is his story.

Bridgetown was gazetted 150 years ago in June 1868. Its history is rich and varied, with residents coming from every walk of life throughout those years. To celebrate the sesquicentenary of gazettal, Bridgetown Historical Society undertook an oral history project to demonstrate how a community was formed, what sustained it and how it grew into the vibrant town we now live in. Forty-three residents, both past and present, were interviewed and their stories, along with stories taken in the 1930s, 1970s and 1980s, have been woven into the chronicle of this town, showing that communities will survive if they care for each other, volunteer gladly and grasp opportunities when they appear. It is a tribute to the early settlers who were not put off by adversity, and the past and present Bridgetonians who choose to live here and make Bridgetown their home.

William Redfern, surgeon, sailor, mutineer, prisoner and pioneer. From his birth in approximately 1775 to joining the Royal Navy as a ship's surgeon, it seemed William Redfern was destined for a life of relative wealth and status, but all that changed in 1797, when he was swept up in the infamous Nore Mutiny. At odds with his fellow officers, Redfern was court-martialed for his actions and sentenced to be hanged. Due to his profession, the sentence was commuted to transportation for life and on arrival in New South Wales, his exceptional surgical skills quickly saw him granted a full pardon. He was soon central to the new colony's medical services, was appointed personal surgeon to the Governor and Assistant Surgeon of the Colonial Medical Services, but despite becoming a wealthy landowner in his own right, he would forever carry the `convict's stain' in the eyes of certain members of the British Colonial establishment. Mostly remembered for the Sydney suburb that bears his name, this outstanding new biography, in two volumes, breathes fresh life into the story of William Redfern and follows the rise and fall and subsequent rise again of one of Australia's most influential early settlers. A pioneer of immunisation techniques and an advocate for the role of hygiene and nutrition he truly was one of the first to understand that prevention was better than cure.

The festival tradition of Irish dancing has played a significant part in Ulster's culture over the past century. This historical account takes the reader on a journey from courtly ballrooms and cottage firesides across a landscape of barn dances, harvest homes, fancy dance classes, feiseanna and festivals, narrating how Catholic and Protestant children held hands in town halls, parochial halls and Protestant halls even when bombs splintered communities and deepened mistrust.Highlighting the various provincial towns that nurtured and helped grow the festival movement throughout the 20th century, Angeline's work explores significant figures in the development of both 'feis' and `festival', the champion dancers, influential teachers and unsung community `heroes' who kept this cross-community activity alive.Containing source and archive material drawn from newspaper reports dating back to the 1700s, Ordnance surveys, diaries, journals and interviews with more than 80 of the 20th century's festival dance teachers and pupils, this work will fill a significant gap in Irish dancing publications and appeal to the tens of thousands of current and former festival Irish dancers and Irish dancing enthusiasts in Northern Ireland and further afield.

"I didn't know they existed until recently. They've been hiding right under our noses all over the world. They are even here in Salem, hunting in the shadows removing all evidence of their presence as they go. The thing is though, they're on our side. We need them. The Order of Elysium is the only thing keeping those same shadows from swallowing us up. I've studied demons all my life, getting too close for comfort on more than one occasion, but the Wardens of the Order fight them every chance they get to keep us safe. Today I found out they used to be regular humans once, but each one of them died and were deemed worthy to be brought back by the angels to serve. To help fight a war against the darkness. A war they are losing... Now I've found myself right in the middle of it, and the lines between the dark and light are getting harder to see."Excerpt from Adley Black's personal memoirs.
