Waterworks, an exploration of New York City’s water supply and wastewater treatment systems, was originally published in 2003. This new and expanded edition is a complete reworking of the book, featuring 362 photographs made between 1992 and 2024, and two new large folded insert maps. Greenberg visited reservoirs, aqueducts, tunnels, gatehouses, water supply and sewer pumping stations, water tanks, wastewater treatment plants, stormwater retention facilities and maintenance covers throughout the watershed and around the city. The maps identify over 400 sites in the system, from upstate reservoirs to abandoned systems and tunnel shaft sites. In the late 1990s, Greenberg received unprecedented access to photograph the system, which made much of this work possible. After 9/11, all facilities were closed to the public. Since then, Greenberg located hundreds of sites in plain view but largely unknown and unidentified; anonymous street furniture invisible to most people. The book and map — a field guide for anyone called to their own exploration — show a mostly underground and hidden system. The map is based on field investigations and historical documents and is designed by Greenberg and Larry Buchanan.Stanley Greenberg (b. Brooklyn, NY) has been photographing the built environment since the early 1980s. He is the author of Invisible New York, Olmsted Trees, Springs and Wells, CODEX: New York, Time Machines, and Under

I was born in Brooklyn, New York to working class Egyptian parents in the last week of 1969. When I beganphotographing in Cairo, my intention was to reclaim my identity as an Egyptian and to engage in a dialogue about the environmental conditions that make up the city of Cairo. I set down my camera in public space imagining that I too could be objective. I was led to question my “American” way of thinking by events unfolding around me: a revolution, a military coup, and also, by the ways and generosity of everyday people.Anthony Hamboussi  is a photographer, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1969. There is something seductive about a temporary apocalypse, the kind you can enter knowing it is not yours. Knowing that you can return to your unburned, unflooded, uninterrupted world. For now.Eventually there will be no escape from the climate crisis or the conflagrations that rise from thecompounding, cascading issues of consumption and overpopulation that light up our laptops and phone screens in endless feeds of images like mine. And yes, I know it was more than our changing climate that burned LA. It was Santa Ana winds, the urban-wildland interface, arson and power lines, and all the other elements of this perfect storm. But I also know that our climate will continue to remind us of our consumption with events like these, closer together and more extreme. And that story is bigger than the details of each chapter or the individuals in the images. I had already decided I would start following that larger story when I saw the city on fire that first night and started packing my bags for the airport...

The sky over the Pacific Palisades had turned the color of rust, with the thick smoke blocking the late afternoon sun. When I arrived just a couple of hours after the first reports of the Palisades fire had come in, multimillion-dollar homes and the hills above them were already on fire as I turned off Sunset Boulevard and entered a residential neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades. The roads leading out of the hills were filled with evacuation traffic that clogged the winding streets. In contrast, others had abandoned their cars altogether, shouldering backpacks, pets, and whatever they could carry…

“An artist tends to never think about the breath of their career in a fully flourished way. From start to finish, Beginning to end, inside and out.But all in all, there is a process to brilliancy as an artist. Starting out with the simplest forms of ideas then slowly evolving those ideas one by one, thought by thought until you have reached another plateau of knowledge. I don't know if there is ever a lineal destination of an artist's work, but I know there is always an early start. These works are prime examples of what I consider "early work". The stage of work that I am currently moving within will further be considered as such once l have reached new plateaus. My understanding of this stage allows me to give myself grace and belief in my growth and progress as an artist…”Oji Haynes (b.1999) is a cultural practitioner with a focus in the photographic medium.
