Using concise terms, peace could be defined as freedom from hostility; security as freedom from danger; and kyosei as social responsibility. Can a new comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to peace studies be developed? Why is a new direction essential, and what kind of impact might it have? How can educational institutions reach across disciplines to educate students about these globally important concepts? In a pioneering cross-cultural, transnational and multifaceted endeavor, Japanese and American scholars from various disciplines jointly explore these challenging questions by redefining the three key concepts of "peace, security and kyosei." Based on academic analyses in Japan and the United States, the book offers new perspectives for interdisciplinary peace studies and stimulates a public dialogue on how to shape a safer and more peaceful future for individuals, communities, and nations.

Minneapolis has long been known as the “City of Lakes.” But all the city’s major lakes are, in fact, parks. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board also owns significant stretches of the banks of the Mississippi River and tributary streams within the city. Neighborhood parks and playgrounds dot the landscape as in few other cities. Encircling them is an extensive system of parkways, the Grand Rounds. In reality, Minneapolis is not just a city of lakes, but a city of parks. This vast system of open spaces was acquired by a park board largely independent of the rest of city government. The park board was created by the Minnesota legislature and ratified by Minneapolis voters in April 1883. The vote that created a park board with extraordinary powers culminated years of effort by a handful of park visionaries-and marked the beginning of a celebrated municipal park system.City of Parks tells the stories of many people who helped create Minneapolis parks and managed the turning points in park history. Among them were Horace Cleveland, the eloquent proponent of preserving land for public use, Charles Loring, known as the “Father of Minneapolis Parks,” and William Folwell, the first president of the University of Minnesota, who was a staunch advocate of park expansion. These extraordinary men were followed by an energetic superintendent of parks, Theodore Wirth, who managed the expansion and reshaping of parks, Clifford Booth, who helped establish an active park recreation program, and Eloise Butler, who created a wild flower garden of world renown. With foresight and determination the stewards of Minneapolis’s parks have adapted to evolving public demand for parks and for recreation programs-nearly always with an eye on the future. City of Parks is the story of how the people of a city not only met their own needs, but anticipated those of future generations.

A long-overdue collection of the great fiction writers who have been associated with Louisiana State University. Beginning with three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Penn Warren, this anthology records the journey of LSU's prestigious literary tradition.

Through the Crystal Ball of the Chancellor's Residence brings you inside the original 1928 Chancellor's Residence at 1803 Hillsborough Street to share the vision and the family life of each of the university's leaders, from President Brooks to Chancellor Woodson. Just as the glass globe on the newel of the staircase near the front door reflects a panoramic view of the rooms, the furniture, and the world outside, the house too is a crystal ball through which we can view North Carolina State's history through most of the twentieth century. Treasured photographs from the albums of the house's former residents convey the spirit of each family. The idea for this book was born in late 2011 as Chancellor Randy Woodson and his wife Susan moved from the residence to ""The Point,"" the new residence on Main Campus Drive at Centennial Campus. The stately Georgian Revival house had projected the dignified image of the leaders of the institution since its completion in 1928, and Susan wanted to celebrate the role of the old house during its eighty-three years. The old chancellor's residence on Hillsborough Street will be renovated and expanded as the home of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design. The Gregg's collection of over 25,000 objects includes major holdings in textiles, clothing, ceramics, folk and Native American art, photography, design, decorative arts, and self-taught art. The museum will be able to present more of its holdings as well as special exhibits in the 15,000-square-foot addition designed by the Freelon Group architects of Durham. This book also honors the other buildings and the plan of the historic North Campus along Hillsborough Street. Using documentary images from the NCSU Libraries Special Collections Research Center and recent images by photographers Edward T. Funkhouser, Roger Winstead, Craig McDuffie, Roger Manley, and others, it explores the university's architectural roots, beginning with the 1887 construction of Main Building (Holladay Hall), when one building held the entire college. During the Roaring Twenties, nationally known architect Warren Manning transformed the campus into a modern, harmonious ensemble of Neoclassical Revival educational buildings, Colonial Revival dormitories, gymnasium, and landscape courtyards. The former chancellor's residence stands as one of the final elements of the transformed campus, which served the university well until its growth boom after World War II.

In The Seven Lamps of Architecture, the famed Victorian art critic John Ruskin declared, "Watch an old building with anxious care, guard it as best you may."  Through a combination of riveting photos and descriptive history, Utah State Capitol curador Judith McConkie captures the anxious care that restored and preserved the Capitol building. The book begins with a personal introduction by the preservation project's executive architect, David H. Hart, who guided the project for nearly a decade.  The book features wonderful historic photographs of the Capitol's early 20th century beginnings, and stunning pictures by graphic design artist Michael Dunn of the recent preservation and restoration.  The history, art, and architecture of the building are eloquently presented to appeal to scholars, preservation enthusiasts, and Utah residents.

Jordan’s Point, a nearly triangular promontory in the James River, is situated in Prince George County, just east of the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers. A broad terrace overlooking the James, Jordan’s Point is bounded by small streams, tidal marshes, and protective uplands that rise to a height of 100 feet or more. In 1607, when the first European colonists saw Jordan’s Point, it was graced by the homes and cleared fields of natives they would call the Weyanoke. Virginia colonist Samuel Jordan established a community called Jordan’s Journey around 1621, giving his name to what became known as Jordan’s Point. In time, the settlement became a hub of social and political life. By 1660, Jordan’s Point had come into the possession of the Blands, one of England’s most important mercantile families. They leased their property to one or more of their agents, usually merchants and mariners involved in inter-colonial trade. Richard Bland I and his descendants developed Jordan’s Point into a family seat and working plantation they retained until after the Civil War. At Jordan’s Point enslaved men, women, and children toiled in the fields, enabling the Blands to prosper. Richard Bland IV went on to become a distinguished American patriot, and one of his sons became a physician.Featuring more than one hundred photos and illustrations, most in color, and intended for a general reader, Jordan’s Point, Virginia: Archaeology in Perspective, Prehistoric to Modern Times tells the story of Jordan’s Point, which spans thousands of years, through the cultural features that archaeologists have unearthed there. This is a book that will attract readers interested in Native American studies, Virginia and colonial history, and archaeology.Distributed for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources

The Land Trust for Tennessee set out in 1999, in the words of its mission statement, ""to preserve the unique character of Tennessee's natural and historic landscapes and sites for future generations."" In 2012, near the end of its fourteenth year, the Nashville-based non-profit organization had completed more than two hundred individually-crafted legal agreements with property owners in fifty-plus Tennessee counties, assuring that their designated tracts of land - about 75,000 acres in all - will be safeguarded forever. These family farms, native forests, mountains, waterways and historic sites, which together bolster the state's image as one of the greenest and most picturesque in the nation, will be perpetually sustained for the pleasure and benefit of all.To explain how these diverse conservation covenants work is a complex task, since each separate case is its own story, with its own narrative and cast of characters. Recognizing these challenges, The Land Trust decided to select a few 'typical' partner-families and present their stories in singular detail through the pictures of photo-documentation Nancy Rhoda and the carefully crafted verbal profiles of writer Varina Willse.Home to Us: Six Stories of Saving the Land invites us onto the ground and into the lives of the Crunks, the Neals, the Fishers, the Pierces, the Knights and the Ozburns - Tennesseans who have set aside their property to be preserved as a legacy to the future. Home to Us goes to the heart and soul of a universally recognized bond that connects all people to the places they call home.
