No quilter can resist a stack of beautifully co-ordinated fabrics all neatly folded into a bundle and tied with a bow. As more fabric stores specialise in combining and marketing their own custom bundles of fat quarters, it leaves many quilters with just a ‘taste’ of many fabrics in the form of these 18 x 22’’ cuts (called fat quarters) but not really enough to make an entire quilt out of. Emma, a former fabric shop owner in Australia herself, inspires quilters to create one of her 12 quilts specifically designed to showcase these fabulous cuts whether they are from a single fabric collection or a complementary combination of many fabric lines. Emma’s patterns cross over beautifully between the modern and the new traditional quilt maker alike.

Piecing with intention simply means taking the time to think about how you cut your fabrics and where they will end up appearing in the finished quilt. From fussy cutting particular design elements from commercially manufactured fabrics to working with selvages and stripes effectively, Amy offers readers unique patterns (quilts, a clutch and even a tote with 10 interchangeable paper piecing patterns to customise—perfect for gifting) that feature precise piecing for graphic and sometimes whimsical results. Fabric is the focus of this book: how to work with your favourite fabrics effectively to achieve the patchwork results you want. Foundation paper piecing is the most effective way to achieve perfect blocks even from the smallest pieces of fabrics, so most of the patterns are created using this method, but there are some traditionally pieced and appliqué projects as well. Amy includes both smaller projects and larger quilts—truly something for everyone.

The second in Lucky Spool’s best-selling series, Scraps, Inc., Volume 2 features 15 well-known designers who are sharing a new quilt pattern using their favorite fabric scraps that they can’t bear to throw away. Most quilters present their finished quilts as gifts to friends and loved-ones, but often these projects leave extra fabric scraps that quilt-makers can’t bear to just throw away. Scrap-based quilting titles are consistently best-sellers as quilters are always looking for new and innovative patterns to feature these treasured fabrics. Most often, these are the quilts that get kept by their maker as a reminder of all of the other quilts they have gifted over the years. Scrap quilts can be tricky to design due to the variety of color challenges that random scraps can introduce, but these patterns solve those issues through clearly illustrated color schematics. The book includes a range of projects from simple to advanced and beautiful patterns to make color harmony easy.

Quilters love the look of textural, detailed stitching that adds to the beauty of the quilt top design. This stitching is actually the “quilting” in quilting, and many quilters feel that paying a professional for machine quilting is one of their only options. The walking foot is an accessory for sewing machines that’s often used for machine quilting, but many quilters only use it to stitch around their designs. But the walking foot can do so much more, and author Jacquie Gering shows all of her tips, tricks and techniques to master all of the skills needed to quilt with a walking foot. This book cover the basics of using the walking foot, in addition to preparing the quilt, marking, managing large quilts, preventing puckers and keeping lines straight. Chapters include a variety of types of walking-foot quilting, including channel quilting, matchstick quilting, and decorative stitch quilting. Quilters won’t be limited to straight line quilting, either! They’ll learn how to quilt spirals, simple curves, and and marked curves like braids and clamshells.

If you are like authors Nichole and Elisabeth, your favourite part of quilting is fussy cutting – and it usually involves figuring out how to enhance an interesting quilt block by framing a favourite element in your most-loved fabric! Let fussy cutting become more than just showing a single design. By following along with how to create drastically different samplers from each of their 48 unique patchwork blocks, see how those same 9'' blocks can easily be adapted to your own personal taste. Compare their blocks (and their samplers!) side by side and get inspired to use the fabrics you love to create your own sampler blocks. Learn how to navigate those pesky stripes, how to work with either a limited palette or an eclectic scrappy one, and how to incorporate improvisational piecing to fussy cut even the smallest parts of your favourite designs. Plenty of clear illustrations and how-to photographs, along with several examples of different types of fabrics, will guide you through each of the lessons. Suddenly, you'll see the endless possibilities in your fabric stash and won't be able to resist creating a fussy-cut sampler all your own.
