CHamoru Legends retells twelve CHamoru legends and features personal reflections from author Teresita Lourdes Perez, unique illustrations of each legend by Guam artists, and versions of the legends in the CHamoru language by Maria Ana Tenorio Rivera. The book includes CHamoru classics like the story of the siblings who created the universe; the two lovers who were pushed to the edge of a cliff because their union was forbidden; and the tale of the son who leapt an island away to escape his jealous father.CHamoru Legends is the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards Bronze Medal recipient for Best Regional Fiction for Australia/New Zealand/Pacific Rim.It is a reversible book featuring the legends in English on one side and in CHamoru on the other. Through multiple layers of interpretation, the book weaves together strips of wisdom and cultural lessons like the leaves used to shape the CHamoru guåfak, or mat, upon which the earliest CHamoru storytellers sat sharing their versions of these timeless tales.

On February 1, 1975, National Security Adviser Henry A. Kissinger informed the Departments of Defense, Interior, and State that President Gerald R. Ford had decided that the United States "should seek agreement with Guamanian representatives on a commonwealth relationship no less favorable than that which we are negotiating with the Northern Marianas." This presidential decision was based on a year-long classified study by these agencies, which concluded that the national security and defense interests of the United States required that Guam's legitimate complaints about its political status be promptly addressed. Two years later, when President Ford left office in January 1977, this directive remained unimplemented and unknown to Guam's elected officials. This book explores the origin and fate of this important and previously undisclosed study of Guam's political status.

Ulithi Atoll, Micronesia draws together rich and varied sources of information on this important Pacific Island community. Representing multi-disciplinary research and literary traditions, the 12 authors report on various aspects of life, culture, economics, human development, island challenges, and the ecology of Ulithi. Experiences of Ulithians are traced through successive periods of competitive explorers and traders; the Spanish, German, Japanese, and US colonial periods; and finally, Ulithi's emergence into its self-governing status within Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Each author of this book has had significant experience within Ulithi Atoll and among Ulithian people. Three of the writers– Eulalia Harui-Walsh, Joliene Hasugulayag, and Joshua Walsh– bring their own indigenous experiences and wisdom to their chapters. Each chapter is enriched by information about or provided by contemporary Ulithians.

Van Peenen’s little book is one of the few records of Chamorro oral tradition and is therefore an invaluable source for cultural memory as well as the study of how Chamorro identity changed from centuries of cultural submergence, and clearly bears the marks of cultural domination. . . . Despite her politically incorrect diversions, Van Peenen has done a great service for Chamorro culture and identity."" —from the Introduction by John A. PetersonText in English and Spanish

For more than two thousand years the Samoan Islands were among the most forgotten places on earth, but by the late nineteenth century they suddenly attracted the attention of some of the most powerful nations on the globe. Germany and the United Kingdom became interested in the western islands, but it was the U.S. that eventually obtained suzerainty over Pago Pago harbor on the island of Tutuila in the east and began its one and only South Seas colonial experiment. In the Pacific and elsewhere, native populations have traditionally and actively sought independence from their invasive colonial co-partners or have, at the very least, passively but begrudgingly tolerated them. But the relationships between the Samoans of the eastern islands and their American administrators were remarkably different: The Samoans chose boycott over outright belligerence and elected to outlast (and sometimes outwit) their colonial partners while pressing for changes that would bring them into the American family. The story of how this all came about was not without its share of problems, but colonial neglect, native resistance, two world wars, and even administrative madness did not derail an association that somehow continues to this day.

The structure known as the Governor's Palace during Guam's Spanish period and Government House during its American naval period, has remained an integral part of present-day Agana. This volume records the findings of archaeological excavations that began in 1983.
