Mobility and migration, hardly new phenomena in Southeast Asia, both raise intriguing questions about experiences of place, home, and belonging. The term 'homeland' can refer to the modern nation of citizenship, but often 'homelands' may be places of origin socially memorialized in people's lives in far-distant locations. 'Homeland' may even refer to a sense of belonging painfully re-worked with respect to these new locations. The essays in this volume consider various forms of 'home' and 'homeland' that are meaningful for some of the peoples of archipelagic Southeast Asia, with particular reference to Indonesia and East Timor.

A recent series of terrorist attacks, the uncovering of a large terrorist network, and a string of continuing regional conflicts have raised an awareness that Southeast Asia is amongst the world's most troubled areas. Since the mid-1990s, tertiary education in Malaysia has experienced great transformation. Legislation was introduced to make the system more democratic and international. Focusing on public universities, this book analyses recent reforms in the sector, and seeks to initiate an urgently-needed debate on how the reforms should be implemented. this study is based on extensive interviews with academics from public universities at Malaysian institutions, because it is individual academics who play a crucial role in developing and maintaining the credibility and reputation of universities. Their stories give a clear picture of public universities that are juggling different expectations and pressures from the social, political and economic environments. The question is how this elusive balance can be achieved.

Over the last two decades, China's extraordinary rate of economic growth has been driven by the 120-150 million people who have flocked into China's cities from the surrounding countryside in search of a better life. This book examines the manner in which these people live, work, and interact with their urban cousins. A particular feature of the book is its comparative focus, with interesting parallels drawn between China's experience with mass internal migration and labour market restructuring and the experiences of India, Mexico, and France.

Every year on 22 December, Indonesia celebrates Women's Day. The date marks the recognised beginning of the organised women's movement by commemorating the start of the first Indonesian women's congress in 1928, leading to the first federation of women's organisations. Although this fact is quite well-known in Indonesia, the details of what happened at the congress are not, because the record of the congress has been lost to view. This book restores to light the contemporary account of the congress as reported in the women's federation publication of 1929. The original version of the report, included here, is worth studying for what it reveals of the discourse of the time, as young women spoke publicly in the new national language, Bahasa Indonesia, an unfamiliar exercise for most of them. The report also shows the ideals of national unity and progress for women that inspired the congress participants, and the ideas that divided them, especially those relating to Islam and marriage laws. Reading these speeches gives lively insights into the minds of young women at the start of the women's movement and highlights the concerns that have continued to motivate women's organisations in Indonesia. Susan Blackburn has translated the congress report into English and prefaced it with an introduction that sets the background to the congress and analyses its proceedings.

In telling the personal stories of Australians in Japan and Japanese in Australia, this book explores issues of race, identity, and ambition in times of war and peace. The essays collected here illuminate a variety of fascinating lives and individual achievements, from trade to literature and the arts, the media, and the justice system. For over 150 years, people have been shaped by and contributed to the breadth, strength, and diversity of the Australia-Japan relationship. As the editors and their contributors contend, a transnational relationship is ultimately constituted by hundreds of untold, seesawing, and yet fruitful, personal encounters that overcome prejudice, and blur the boundaries set by official and unofficial racial mores.

This will appeal to those interested in Thailand, critiques of travel writing and the Anna Leonowen's legacy.

One Indonesian soldier was particularly nice to me. He gave me pretty clothes and sweets and used to take me for walks and to his office. Then one Sunday, it was just after my first communion, I was coming out of church with other children when soldiers took me and put me into a vehicle. My uncle tried to stop them. I remember screaming and being very frightened. They took me to the nearby airfield and then in a helicopter. As we took off I threw the handkerchief my uncle had given me out of the helicopter. In Dili I stayed for some time in the soldiers’ barracks in Taibessi where there were East Timorese women, one of whom cared for me. On one occasion I tried to run away and find my way back home. After some time the soldier was finished in Ainaro; he collected me from the barracks and took me back to Indonesia by plane.'— Biliki, in Jakarta (2003) recalling her last recollections of her life in East Timor as a sevenyearold child in 1978.Biliki was one of approximately 4,000 dependent East Timorese children who were transferred to Indonesia during the occupation of East Timor by Indonesia between 1975 and 1999. This book is the first detailed account of the history of the transfer of these children to Indonesia.
