Come face-to-face with lions, tigers, and more in this gorgeous retrospective collection of narrated images from a renowned National Geographic photographer. 170 photographs, the best of Steve Winter’s award-winning images of the world’s charismatic felines, jump off the pages of this powerful large-format book. National Geographic photographer Steve Winter has spent his career photographing big cats around the world, from the graceful jaguars of Brazil’s Pantanal to the elusive Himalayan snow leopard. His photographs astound, his stories, even more so. In Big Cats, Winter and environmental journalist Sharon Guynup share experiences behind the lens. In chapters on every key species—cougar, jaguar, leopard, snow leopard, tiger, and lion—readers will witness the power of Winter’s work, including uplifting stories of how his photographs have made a difference and powered important conservation efforts on behalf of these mighty creatures, including: -The famous photo of P-22, the cougar in front of the Hollywood sign, which inspired construction of a wildlife crossing spanning 10 lanes of L.A.'s 1010 Freeway. -Photos of tigers at the infamous Thai Tiger Temple, part of an investigation that led the government to shut down the business. -Photos of American lion and tiger amusement venues (such as those in Tiger King) that contributed to the passage of a U.S. law banning big cats as pets. -Photos of the Himalaya's "ghost cat"—the snow leopard—that inspired local projects to protect this elusive animal. Winter and Guynup’s work has changed the world—and it continues to awe and inspire us. But you don’t have to be a serious-minded conservationist to be pulled into their new book. All animal lovers—especially those who love cats, big and small—are invited to look deeply into the eyes and lives of these iconic species, chronicled in this beautiful keepsake book.

Anna Quindlen first visited London from a chair in her suburban Philadelphia home—in one of her beloved childhood mystery novels. She has been back to London countless times since, through the pages of books and in person, and now, in Imagined London, she takes her own readers on a tour of this greatest of literary cities. While New York, Paris, and Dublin are also vividly portrayed in fiction, it is London, Quindlen argues, that has always been the star, both because of the primacy of English literature and the specificity of city descriptions. She bases her view of the city on her own detailed literary map, tracking the footsteps of her favorite characters: the places where Evelyn Waugh’s bright young things danced until dawn, or where Lydia Bennett eloped with the dastardly Wickham. With wit and charm, Imagined London gives this splendid city its full due in the landscape of the literary imagination.

Forever a Soldier captures the personal side of war in 37 extraordinary narratives that bear eloquent witness to both the life-changing experience of battle and to the unflagging spirit that sustained countless ordinary Americans plunged into the bloody conflicts of the deadliest, most destructive century in human history. Some tell of frontline action: a doughboy’s 1918 baptism of fire: a battleship gunner’s grim duel with Japanese planes; a female fighter pilot’s capture by Iraqis during the Gulf War. Others evoke moments of relief and reflection, or recall deeply moving episodes: two wounded soldiers—one German, one American—clasping hands in the wordless brotherhood of pain; a POW whose faith gave him the strength to endure torture in the notorious “Hanoi Hilton;” a GI’s lifelong grief for a buddy killed on the last day of World War II in Europe. Forever a Soldier presents famous incidents like the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and her survivors’ terrifying ordeal in the shark-infested Pacific, and heroic figures like John McCain, but it’s the long-untold stories of unheralded patriots that best reveal the universal truths of war: courage and fear, horror and exhilaration, sorrow and triumph—the shared legacy of every American veteran, and a debt of honor the rest of us must respect but can never repay.

In the episode Hiawatha and Megissogwon, the hero Hiawatha, sun of the West Wind, is grown to manhood-a powerful figure, righting wrongs and vanquishing demons. What follows is dramatic and packed with action, as Hiawatha slays serpents, evades ghosts, and finally confronts the mighty Megissogwon. Jeffrey Thompson's evocative scratchboard and computer colour illustrations combine with Longfellow's stirring poetry to create a stunning picturebook that will capture the readers' imaginations.

This photobiography of Thomas Edison continues the National Geographic children's photobiography series with an especially appealing and well-known subject. Thomas Edison (1847-1931) is thought by many to be one of the greatest inventors in history. Among his numerous achievements, he developed the light bulb, invented the phonograph, and made significant contributions to the fields of photography and filmmaking. His inventions helped lay the foundation for the modern national power grid, the recording industry, and the motion picture industry. He patented an astounding total of 1,093 inventions - more than any other inventor. His famous saying, "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration," encapsulates his attitude toward inventing. He developed his ideas through perseverance, trying things over and over again until he finally made a breakthrough. This approach gave birth to the modern research laboratory, where hypotheses are proposed and then tested. Edison's legacy is as much in his groundbreaking and gritty way of thinking as in his practical inventions. Thomas Edison was a character - a character who makes a great book subject. He slept little at night and so would catnap during the day, anywhere he felt like, even stretching out on his lab table for some Z's. He worked with many assistants, whom he called "muckers," and together they would work round the clock to feverishly develop inventions and beat out their competition. One bout of this earned a group the name, "the Insomnia Squad." Edison even nicknamed his first children, "Dot" and "Dash" after the symbols in Morse code. Thomas Edison was a significant influence on a developing industrial nation, and he was recognized for his achievements even in his own time. When he died at the age of 84, President Herbert Hoover asked all Americans to honor him by turning off their electric lights for a moment of darkness. Edison filled more than 3,000 notebooks with sketches and notes, and the best of that material is captured here. Compelling period images of Edison at work and of his life and times round out a humanizing portrait of a great American.
