If a young person is to become a skilled and responsible self-learner, who finds joy and success in education, there is no way around the frequent use of dictionaries. Studies clearly show that understanding the meaning of words is the key to success as a student. But when you first open a dictionary and look at the various symbols, grammatical terminology, and small print, you may be discouraged. But one does not need a degree in linguistic to enjoy the liberal use of dictionaries with crystal clear understanding. In fact How to Use a Dictionary makes it simple enough for anyone from age eight on up to find his way through the basics of grammar and the small print of wordbooks. And while this book can be understood by young people, it is of no less value to the advanced learner because honestly, do you understand every bit of what you see printed in a lexicon?

Grammar is a subject that has been getting more and more lost in modern school teaching. But it is vital for a student to clearly understand grammar and the structure of the language if he wants to have any chance of success in education and life. Language is the medium that we use for communication. A lack of command of language impedes any activity of life, be it education itself, professional life or personal relationships. Grammar however must be taught in a way that it is easy to comprehend. This is where Grammar and Communication excels! While the book was originally designed to address a rather young audience, given todays standards of education (of lack of them) the books is in fact of great value to anyone, regardless of age, who wants to improve his ability to express himself and understand others.

Imagine an age where the predictability of science and the wisdom of religion combine. Scientology is called a spiritual technology for a reason. Scientology provides tools to assist you to find your own answers to your questions about existence, your own truth about your life and you. The word Scientology comes from: Scio (Latin) 'knowing, in the fullest sense of the word', logos (Greek) 'study of'. Thus Scientology means 'knowing how to know'. Although modern life seems to pose an infinitely complex array of problems, Scientology maintains that the solutions to those problems are basically simple and within every man's reach. Difficulties with communication and interpersonal relationships, nagging insecurities, self-doubt and despair each man innately possesses the potential to be free of these and many other concerns. This book was designated by L. Ron Hubbard as the Book One of Scientology. It gives the basic philosophical principles of Scientology, and shows practical application how to improve conditions in life. It covers concepts like the relation of mind body and spirit, it gives you the analysis of what understanding consists of and how understanding can be mended or achieved, and all other essential concepts of this amazing study, merging science and spirituality.

L. Ron Hubbard goes beneath all these "solutions" to provide the basic knowledge of what actually constitutes understanding. What can you do with this knowledge? By knowing what understanding really is, you have the tools to handle life itself. This means that you have the tools to increase your understanding of just about anything - including the people you know and come into contact with. This knowledge will enable you to help others who are experiencing the travails caused by misunderstandings, differing viewpoints, broken relationships and other ills that make man's life a string of successive hardships. You will learn the components of understanding, how they interrelate and bring about understanding. With the skills one can acquire from a study of the fundamentals contained herein, you can help bring others back into understanding with their fellow man and the world around them.Although only a portion of the full technology Mr. Hubbard developed on this subject is contained here, it is enough to change your approach to life. And its use will help you flourish in any aspect of human activity. If lack of understanding is, indeed, a source of man's problems, imagine his potentials without this hindrance. Millions of people who apply this knowledge are reaching heights they once only dreamed of - and are successfully assisting others to do the same.

How often have you heard someone say, "I don't understand him"? Sometimes irrational, unforeseen acts seem to be the norm among our fellows. The fact is, there has never been a workable method to invariably predict human behavior-until now.L. Ron Hubbard developed just such a method, and it is applicable to all men, without exception. With this data, it is possible to accurately predict the behavior of a potential spouse, a business partner, employee or friend - before you commit to a relationship. The risks involved in human interaction can be avoided entirely or minimized when you can infallibly predict how people will behave.By understanding and using the information in this chapter, all aspects of human relationships will become more productive and more fulfilling. You'll know who to associate with, who to avoid, and you will be able to help those who are mired in uncomfortable situations with others. Imagine knowing, after a very short time, how people will behave in any given circumstance. You can. Each and every time.

A man is as alive as he can communicate," L. Ron Hubbard wrote. And communication is a facet of life which he explored very deeply indeed, ultimately writing hundreds of thousands of words about this vital subject. Communication skills are essential in any sphere of human interaction. In fact, when all is said and done, on whatever level, communication is the sole activity all people share. The benefits of effective communication are too numerous to list, for they enhance all aspects of life from the personal to the professional. The ability to communicate is vital to the success of any endeavor. In this section you will learn what good communication consists of and how to recognize the bad, what the component parts of communication are and how to utilize them, and why more communication, not less, brings the individual greater freedom. Also included in this chapter are numerous drills that Mr. Hubbard developed which improve one's communication level and have great practical application to life. A thorough understanding of this data will provide you with tools you can use forever.

To say that drugs have become the major affliction of society is not stating the situation too strongly. No sector of life is untouched by this epidemic. Crime and violence are the most obvious byproducts, but amorality, aborted educations and, indeed, ruined lives are no less serious and just as widespread. And the problem is not limited to street drugs; the effects of medical and psychiatric drugs, whether painkillers, tranquilizers or "antidepressants," are as disastrous.L. Ron Hubbard addressed this problem, not with the objective of resolving the physical ills of individuals but as a continuation of his quest to free man as a spirit and handle, along this route, any barrier that needed to be resolved. Drugs were such a barrier.Until Mr. Hubbard developed a workable drug rehabilitation program, there was no solution. Psychiatric-inspired programs had many more failures than successes and some only created worse addictions. Other people, more well-intentioned, found that good intentions weren't enough. They lacked a technology that worked.Mr. Hubbard's program provides that technology. From helping the person discover why he took drugs in the first place, to eliminating the mental and spiritual damage done by drugs, to detoxifying the body of long-term drug residues, to providing the person with tools that will enable him to stay off drugs for good, it is without doubt the most thorough and effective program in the world. Today, for the first time, as hundreds of thousands will attest, those addicted to drugs and alcohol can free themselves of this tyranny and face life with renewed vigor and hope. This section contains some of the elementary principles of this program and provides the first real understanding of substance abuse problems.

It seems that people often have trouble getting along together. Families argue, neighbors come to blows, countries lob weapons at each other. Is this the way it has to be?Anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists and others say it is. Having observed a long history of man's quarrelsome behavior, they claim that man has animal instincts, or that he is antisocial and violent by his very nature. In truth, man is rather peaceful. But he can be driven, individually and collectively, to hatred and violence. In researching the causes of violence, L. Ron Hubbard unearthed a fundamental and natural law of human relations which explains why conflicts between people are so often difficult to remedy. And he provided an immensely valuable tool that enables one to resolve any conflict, be it between neighbors, co-workers or even countries. In this chapter, you will discover how to help others resolve their differences and restore peaceable relations. Peace and harmony between men can be more than just a dream. Widespread application of this law will make it a reality.

We live in a perilous world, a dangerous environment. Watch television news or read your daily newspaper and you are subjected to a daily diet of robberies, rapes, riots, murders, fires, earthquakes, floods and famines.Do you find yourself becoming disturbed by what is happening around you? Do you feel helpless, unable to control these events? Do you even sometimes feel afraid? In this section, L. Ron Hubbard dissects this phenomenon of the dangerous environment, providing methods that will not only help you overcome your fears, but allow you to help others. Applied on a broad scale, this information brings about an enormous calming influence and enables people to lead happier lives. Used on an individual scale - by you - it will enhance the lives of your family, friends and associates.

Many people go through life in a rather hit-or-miss fashion, casting about for ideas to explain why their projects improve or decline, why they are successful or why they are not. Guessing and "hunches," however, are not very reliable. And without the knowledge of how to actually investigate situations, good or bad, and get the true facts, a person is set adrift in a sea of unevaluated data.Accurate investigation is, in fact, a rare commodity. Man's tendency in matters he doesn't understand is to accept the first proffered explanation, no matter how faulty. Thus investigatory technology had not actually been practiced or refined. However, L. Ron Hubbard made a breakthrough in the subject of logic and reasoning which led to his development of the first truly effective way to search for and consistently find the actual causes for things.Knowing how to investigate gives one the power to navigate through the random facts and opinions and emerge with the real reasons behind success or failure in any aspect of life. By really finding out why things are the way they are, one is therefore able to remedy and improve a situation-any situation. This is an invaluable technology for people in all walks of life.

Learning should be fun, and it sure is, if one clearly understands what one is trying to study.
