This is the first progressive book to argue that the BDS movement (boycott, divestment and sanctions) is the wrong way to broker peace in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The BDS movement against Israel has gained traction and publicity worldwide. Yet here, Philip Mendes and Nick Dyrenfurth – politically progressive commentators – argue that BDS is too blunt an instrument to use in a such a complex situation. Instead, they propose a solution that supports Israel’s existence and Palestinian rights to a homeland, urging mutual compromise and concessions from both sides.

No matter where you look in Australia, you're more than likely to see a eucalyptus tree. Scrawny or majestic, smooth as pearl or rough as a pub brawl, they have defined a continent for thousands of years, and they continue to shape our imagination.First Nations Australians have long known the abilities of the eucalyptus. And as part of the raft of changes wrought by the arrival of colonial Australia, botanists have battled in a race to count, classify and own the species – a battle that has lasted more than two hundred years.Gum: The Story of Eucalypts and Their Champions is the story of that battle and of so many other eucalyptographers – explorers, poets, painters, foresters, conservationists, scientists (and engine drivers) – who have also been obsessed by these trees and who have championed their powers. Gum trees have been feted as a cure for malaria, as a solution for the drainage problems that defeated the Roman emperors, as the tree that could forest the Sahara, the tree that could divine gold. This new edition of Gum, from award-winning author Ashley Hay, is a powerful and lyrical exploration of these magical, mythical, medicinal trees, and the story of new worlds, curious people and big ideas.

Henry Reynolds’ ground-breaking re-examination of Australian colonisation from the north down. When acclaimed historian Henry Reynolds moved from Hobart to Townsville to teach Australian history in the 1960s, he discovered the books of the period covered very little about northern Australia and First Nations peoples. After recognising the importance of local history and frontier violence, he ended up transforming Australian history in ways he could never have imagined. In Looking from the North Reynolds again turns Australian history on its axis in an exploration of colonisation north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Reynolds explores the stories of the European, Chinese, Japanese and Pacific Islander people who were vital to the settlement of the north. Along with the experience of First Nations peoples, from employment on stations and as native police, to the land rights and homelands movements. Reynolds shows how the colonisation of the north, beginning in 1861, was a very different venture to settlement in the south, and argues that it provides profoundly important lessons for the world we live in today.

Brave and controversial, this account argues that Australians’ collective obsession with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) has distorted their perception of national history. Delving into the history of ANZAC and the mythologies surrounding it, this detailed record explores topics such as the formation of Australia’s national holiday—ANZAC Day—and the way in which the spirit of ANZAC is taught in the nation's classrooms. Ultimately, this informative narrative claims that ANZAC has become a conservative political force in Australia and questions whether ANZAC’S renowned foreign battles were worth all of the bloodshed. Daring, intelligent, and thought-provoking, this is a must-read for those interested in Australian or military history.

‘Australian governments find it easy to go to war. Their leaders seem to be able to withdraw with a calm conscience, answerable neither to God nor humanity.’ Australia lost 600 men in the Boer War, a threeyear conflict fought in the heart of Africa that had, ostensibly, nothing to do with Australia. Coinciding with Federation, the war kickstarted Australia’s commitment to fighting in Britain’s wars overseas, and forged a national identity around it. By 1902, when the Boer War ended, a mythology about our colonial soldiers had already been crafted, and a dangerous precedent established. This is Henry Reynolds at his searing best, as he shows how the Boer War left a dark and dangerous legacy, demonstrating how those beliefs have propelled us into too many unnecessary wars – without ever counting the cost.

A gripping journey through the past, present and future of vaccines.Vaccination is arguably the greatest public health achievement in history, yet the disappearance of many diseases has also seen an increased focus on the side effects of vaccines and the rise of the anti-vax movement. The COVID-19 pandemic propelled anti-vaccination sentiment into the mainstream – including from some leaders in the medical profession – in an explosion of pseudoscience and disinformation that’s made it increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction. In Vaccine Nation<\i>, internationally acclaimed epidemiologist Raina MacIntyre examines the history of vaccines and how they work, vaccine safety, public policy, cutting-edge new technologies, and the miraculous new developments in vaccines to fight cancer and other chronic diseases. At a critical time when vaccination rates are falling globally, MacIntyre argues that science must reclaim the stage or we will lose centuries of gains that vaccines have brought to the world.

‘The sea was rough, waves a few metres, falling on top of us. We were just waiting and hoping and praying that we were going to make it.’ – Taozen, proud Australian, proud HazaraSmuggled offers a previously unseen glimpse into the dangerous and shadowy world of people smuggling. It shares harrowing true stories of those fleeing persecution to seek asylum and reshapes our idea of those –sometimes family, sometimes mafia – who help them find it.People smugglers have such currency in Australian politics yet they remain unknowable figures in our migration history. But beyond the rhetoric lies a rich past that reaches far from the maritime borders of our island continent – to Jews escaping the Holocaust, Eastern Europeans slipping through the Iron Curtain, ‘boat people’ fleeing the Vietnam War, and refugees escaping unthinkable violence in the Middle East and Africa.Based on revealing personal interviews, Smuggled provides a compelling insight into a defining yet unexplored part of Australian history.

‘The Earth is a Common Treasury’, proclaimed the English Revolutionaries in the 1640s. Does the principle of the commons offer us ways to respond now to the increasingly destructive effects of neoliberalism? With insight, passion and an eye on history, Jane Goodall argues that as the ravages of neo-liberalism tear ever more deeply into the social fabric, the principle of the commons should be restored to the heart of our politics. She looks in particular at land and public institutions in Australia and elsewhere. Many ordinary citizens seem prepared to support governments that increase national debt while selling off publicly owned assets and cutting back on services. In developed countries, extreme poverty is becoming widespread yet we are told we have never been so prosperous. This important book calls for a radically different kind of economy, one that will truly serve the common good.Topical and constructive – this book argues for the restoration of the principle of the commons as a way of reclaiming the social fabric from the ravages of neo-liberalismQuestions why so many citizens support governments that increase national debt while selling off publicly owned assetsAsks how and why our political culture and economic policies have become so hostile to communal resources and public ownershipHas an eye on the history of the commons as well as those who advocate for it in a modern form: Bill Shorten and Sally McManus for example in Australia; Jeremy Corbyn in the UK and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the US.

These days, it’s easy to get the impression that people are really very anxious. Who? you ask. Well, people you hear about. People who tell you they are. Friends. Lovers. Acquaintances. Colleagues. The Youth. The term is around and people are applying it to themselves, or having it applied to them, willy-nilly.What would it mean to be able to live a plain life? Would a plain life just be an unambitious one – a drab or routine life, without colour, variation, unknowing or luck? Or would a plain life be one in which we’d fret slightly less, suspect ourselves less, and thus listen to ourselves and others in new ways? We may not need to do more and be more – in the quiet spaces already within us, lurking in the interstices of our days and conversations, there are ways and choreographies to nurture a plainer, saner, odder, less reactive and therefore less terrifying life.In Plain Life, Antonia Pont questions our thinking about capacities, virtue, envy, wanting, love and kindness – suggesting that it might be fine, more than enough, indeed so much, to live a plain life.

Melbourne’s a city you get to know from the inside out — you have to walk it to love it. My favourite time to do this is at night. That’s when you capture glimpses of people — eating, laughing, talking, arguing, watching TV and reading — through halfopen terrace house doors and windows. That’s when you see a shaft of moonlight shoot bright down a bluestone lane, though, as often as not, by the time you look up to see the source of the light a cloud has moved across the sky and the moon has disappeared. It is a city of inside places and conversation. Of intimacy. It’s a city that lives in its head. Melbourne begins on Black Saturday, the day that bushfires tore through the outskirts of Melbourne, destroying the townships of Marysville and Kinglake and shattering thousands of lives. In this bestselling book, Sophie Cunningham writes about what happened over the year that followed. She tries to capture the texture of the city, journeying into her own recollections of the city she grew up in and its history, along the way. Sit through a heatwave, visit the drains underneath the city, participate in a letterpress workshop, wander alongside the Yarra now protected by its traditional custodians the Wurundjeri, cycle alongside tram tracks and cheer at the footy. Live through the drought before the storm, the rain before yet more fire and days of searing heat. Along the way Cunningham shares her Melbourne, its stories and its characters, loving and hating its weather all the while. City of conversations, city of literature, layered and connected, Melbourne evokes the city’s spirit and heart. In her new Introduction Cunningham returns to Melbourne after a period away and reflects on how much her city has changed since Melbourne was first published in 2011: it is hotter, growing more trees and well and truly on the rise. A deeply personal portrait of Melbourne by renowned writer and previous editor of Meanjin, Sophie CunninghamExplores the major influences that have shaped the city – Indigenous water management, weather, music, laneways, AFL, theatre, coffee, food, books, the Yarra River, creeks, cycling, pubs, suburbia and transportConsiders how bushfires and drastically changing weather patterns have affected MelburniansAuthor is one of our most prominent writers and essayists, and a regular at writers’ festivals and literary eventsUpdated edition of a classic with a new Introduction in which Cunningham reflects on how Melbourne has changed since her book was first published in 2011Melbourne was the bestselling title of all the books in the City SeriesShe notes that Melbourne is on track to become Australia’s most populous city

Part art history, part detective story, this gripping insider’s account of the Papunya art movement—which was centered around the 1,000 small, painted panels created at the remote northern territory Aboriginal settlement of Papunya during 1971 and 1972—goes beyond a mere discussion of the astronomical auction prices in the late 1990s that first drew many people’s attention to these pieces. Celebrating Australian art history, this study explores the background of the artists themselves as well as restoring the boards’ historical and cultural significance as the first inscriptions of the religious beliefs and sacred visual language of the Western Desert peoples. It additionally looks at the controversies that surrounded the paintings at the time of their creation, the role of teacher Geoffrey Bardon, the depiction of sacred imagery, what they mean to the artists’ descendants, and the distant worlds of art auctions and international exhibitions—telling the larger story of Aboriginal art in Australia and beyond.

Climate change is predicted to dislocate millions of people in regions already vulnerable to economic, political and environmental disruption. Already some communities, notably Pacific Islanders, are under direct threat of displacement due to climate-related factors. ""Stormy Weather"" looks at the effects of climate change as experienced by the people of Tuvalu, a tiny, picturesque Pacific nation. It looks at how the international community should respond to climate-related migration in Asia, the Pacific and Africa, and argues that Australia - in a region in which 60 per cent of the world's population lives and where the human implications of climate change will be played out - has a particular interest in ensuring that this new challenge is met. This title examines the dynamics and implications of climate- migration. It considers the effects of climate change at a micro level and paints a vivid picture of life in a small Pacific nation. It draws out the wider implications for Australia and countries across Asia, the Pacific and Africa.

Australia was born vulnerable. From its beginnings as a precarious convict settlement on the 'other side of the world', through the development of self-governing colonies, to Federation and beyond, recognising and dealing with vulnerability led Australians to embrace an insular attitude to the outside world, which in turn translated into state control over the economy and highly protectionist policies. So how did Australia transform from a protected, insular country to an outwardly focused, globalised one? And why, in the current economic climate, should Australia resist a return to its protectionist past? The Vulnerable Country begins with historical analysis of the interaction between politics and economics, covers the credit crunch of 2007 and culminates with the current global financial crisis. Tom Conley argues that now, more than ever, the state has a responsibility to promote diversification of trade while regulating economic activity and ensuring that the benefits of growth are spread as widely as possible.

It has been ten years since the 1999 Republican referendum failed. Whilst it was ultimately unsuccessful, it has engaged people in a debate that has spanned decades. Australians seem to want a republic, but there is uncertainty about what kind of republic we want. If we wish to understand the implications and future of republicanism, we need to know more about it. ""Choosing the Republic"" explores how the people in a constitutional monarchy may choose to become a republic, delving into republican philosophy, the history and practicalities of constitutional change, and the politics of popular debate. This is a thoughtful, insightful and practical account of where we've come from and what needs to be done if Australia is to become a republic. Glenn Patmore offers an accessible contribution to the republican debate from a new perspective.

Contracts are vital to the construction delivery process; they direct and govern every move. This book strips the legal mystique and jargon from contracts and exposes their basic logic. It is presented in three parts, covering issues that arise during the three stages of contract administration: the components of contracts and methods of project delivery; tendering and sub-contracting; specific contracts and dealing with contract disputes. It is an essential guide for tertiary students of construction management, civil engineering, building and architecture, but also covers topics that are essential for practitioners in the construction industry.

The August Offensive was the last attempt by the Allied forces to break the stalemate with the Turkish defenders that had developed since the Anzac landings in late April 1915. It resulted in some of the bloodiest battles on the Gallipoli peninsula - which included the battles for Leane's Trench, Lone Pine, The Nek, Chunuk Bair, Hill Q and Hill 971. Drawing from letters, diaries and official reports from both Commonwealth and Turkish sources, David Cameron recreates in compelling detail the first five days of the offensive.

In this fascinating account, leading Australian military historians tackle 10 of the most enduring historical zombies, or national myths, that have staggered their way through the halls of military history for more than 200 years. From Aboriginal resistance and invasion to Australia’s recent involvement in East Timor, this record disproves the incorrectly memorialized and so-called gallant deeds of past Australian servicemen. Provocative and opinionated, this record attempts to correct the historical record.

The majority of us now die in hospitals and many of us will end up in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the last few days of our lives. Yet for most people, what happens in an ICU remains a mystery. This collection of stories about the experiences of intensive care patients, their families and carers, is about ordinary people facing terrible tragedies and the ways they cope with them. The author, a practicing intensive care clinician, takes the reader on a journey inside an ICU and reveals to the public, for the first time, what really happens inside ICU. The book traces the personal tragedies of ICU patients and their families and the struggles of staff providing care in this critical environment. The core function of the ICU has slowly changed from being life saving to becoming life sustaining - even when there is no hope of a meaningful recovery. Admission to the ICU is often sudden and unexpected and there are few guidelines for dealing with dying under these circumstances. ICU patients are often in a coma or sedated, which means decisions relating to their care must be made by their families. Many of the stories in this collection are about the dilemmas associated with withdrawing and withholding treatment that are faced by family and medical staff in ICU each day. They are about the ways we die and the ways we deal with death. They are about the people who care for us in our last moments: not only our friends and family, but the doctors and nurses who care for us and face these tragedies daily. The book carefully details the pressures on staff and the ways they cope with the intensity of providing this level of care. It is brimming with moments of humour and sadness that cut through the institutional reality of ICU, revealing the very human experience of this institution.

What is it that makes a person a boy or a girl? From our cradles to our graves, a pair of letters, either XX or XY, will define much of our lives. "It's a girl!" or "It's a boy!" will be the first label applied to us, the first thing said about who we are as an individual. For every person in every society, gender has a fundamental affect on what we choose, how we live, and how we think about the world and how the world sees us. Sex is one of the most powerfully defining concepts that we have. Of course, we assume that we know what this gender thing is: boys are boys, girls are girls. Sex is fixed, biologically determined, simple. But what if it isn't? As Jane McCredie moves from laboratories to cafe tables, trying to find out exactly what sex is, the picture becomes much more complicated. Evolutionary psychologists, trans-gendered people, children playing with trucks and dolls, hormone specialists - they all have different stories to tell about what makes us girls and boys. These stories force us to stop and ask, 'is it really so straightforward?' Are we all really just stamped out in blue and pink?Leading us on a remarkable exploration of the ground where biology and culture meet, intertwine and ultimately blur, this book examines the new science which is helping us answer these important questions. Showing that we are far from "opposite" sexes, Making Girls and Boys will challenge everything you thought you knew about men and women.

Dog-keeping may be as old as hunting, grunting and cave-painting, but keeping domestic dogs in family homes is a complex business. One family may lavish attention on their dog while another virtually ignores theirs. One person within a family may be a great trainer while another, within the same household, may be inconsistent or incompetent. Written with clarity and humour, ""A Modern Dog's Life"" offers a new approach to owning and training a dog, drawing on the latest research on dog behaviour and the author's expertise as a vet and animal behaviourist, to explain why dog's behave they way they do. The book takes the time to explore the challenges for the modern dog (and their owners) while exploring what motivates dogs, how to train them effectively, and how to meet their needs for fun and exercise. In short, it is the thinking person's book for dog lovers. It will appeal to every dog owner, vet, trainer or breeder that is genuinely interested in dogs and wants to understand why they behave the way they do. ""A Modern Dog's Life"" also explains how our own behavior can be mystifying to dogs, and establishes why dogs may never comprehend some of our habits. It examines features of dog management that many owners struggle to get right - and sets out some blunt home truths about the realities of keeping a dog. Ultimately, ""A Modern Dog's Life"" is for anyone who wants to understand more about their dog. Its aim is to help you to become a better dog-watcher, team-player, care-giver, companion and life-coach by knowing when and how to intervene. Although 'dog books' abound there are few that address why dog's behave they way do in a scientific yet accessible way. This book provides true insight into dog behaviour offering practical tips and advice throughout.

A major new account of the 1940s in Australia. In this landmark book, Stuart Macintyre explains how a country traumatised by World War I, hammered by the Depression and overstretched by World War II became a prosperous, successful and growing society by the 1950s. An extraordinary group of individuals, notably John Curtin, Ben Chifley, Nugget Coombs, John Dedman and Robert Menzies, re-made the country, planning its reconstruction against a background of wartime sacrifice and austerity. The other part of this triumphant story shows Australia on the world stage, seeking to fashion a new world order that would bring peace and prosperity. This book shows the 1940s to be a pivotal decade in Australia. At the height of his powers, Macintyre reminds us that key components of the society we take for granted – work, welfare, health, education, immigration, housing – are not the result of military endeavour but policy, planning, politics and popular resolve.

What rights do artists and creators have in a world where everything is free?Copyright is one of the central economic and creative issues of our time. We expect to be able to log on and read, watch or listen to anything, anywhere, anytime. Then copy it, share it, quote it, sample it, remix it. Does this leave writers, designers, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, artists and game developers with any rights at all? Have we forgotten how to pay for content? Is the concept of making a living from creativework outdated? Without effective copyright protection will key Australian businesses collapse? And perhaps the biggest question: has illegal downloading become the largest industry of all and copyright violation a way of life?Copyfight brings together writers, musicians and others from creative industries, media companies, cultural institutions, law firms and universities, including John Birmingham, Linda Jaivin, Clem Bastow and Lindy Morrison.
