In this book, Peter Rathmann shows us pictures of America. They are not 'spectacular' but very much worth seeing and the rewards gleaned from them will be commensurate to the attentiveness they call for. Rather then indiscreet glimpses and superficial views, one finds strange -- in the positive meaning of the word -- graphic compositions. This is the work of a photo-designer whose daily tasks include arranging things before the camera in a commanding way. In so doing, he cannot rely on the inherent optical attractiveness of the products that are advertised. Often he has to provide settings, ingeniously arrange and artificially present them to what seems to their best advantage. This requires a creativity-consuming degree of professionalism.

Musicians and photographers are listed in a perpetual calendar that provides an opportunity to celebrate their birthdays or commemorate their deathdays. A major part of the book is comprised of 12 interviews conducted by Karl Lippegaus selected from almost 200 interviews, the priority being to present the most diverse musical characters whose personal data could be integrated in the structure of the calendar. Apart from the conversation with Henri Texier and Michel Portal, which were conducted in French, all the interviews in this book are published in the original English.

... When lava mix, water, sulfur and ice to figures, faces, and spaces are created from a repellent purity that allows the viewer's breath away. ... The water appears in an almost infinite variety of forms in the states of the cloud of mist, the waves and smooth mirror, the caves, the bulky chips, the melting of the dancing figures and gas. The photograph creates its play with time, additional states by freezing sparkling splash on ice molds, currents and waterfalls evaporated in a long exposure. ...

The Swiss photographer, Dany Gignoux has developed a very close relationship with Dizzy Gillespie and accompanied him during his travels with his orchestra. This book shows mostly unusual and private situations which give a good impression of the nice character of the father of bebop.
