The long-awaited, definitive, shocking history of SS Atlantic, the worst shipwreck in Nova Scotia's history, authored by the vessel's recognised authority. In the pre-dawn hours of April 1, 1873 - as the lookouts looked, the steersman steered, and the captain slept - something was happening to the SS Atlantic. The tide had quietly carried the White Star Line ocean liner twelve miles off course, and land was closer than anybody realised - or was willing to believe. The wreck of the SS Atlantic would become the worst transatlantic passenger ship disaster before Titanic, and although it happened almost 150 years ago, there are still many unanswered questions, but that is changing.Ten years after co-authoring the most celebrated book to date on Nova Scotia's worst shipwreck, author Bob Chaulk has uncovered never-reported information that answers the question historians have been grappling with for over a century: why a state-of-the-art steamship, with all equipment in perfect working order, in good weather, and commanded by officers of the world's leading seafaring nation, ended up striking rock outside Halifax and sinking, resulting in some 550 deaths.Over a five-year period, Chaulk tracked down many descendants of those on the scene and aboard the ship, patiently piecing their stories together to reveal a shocking conclusion. This richly illustrated work, featuring maps and colour photos, includes many firsthand accounts from passengers, crew, officers, and local rescue people.

The South End house where Elsie Brooks and her big, complicated family live is bursting with secrets. Elsie's banished husband lives in the basement. Her lonely sister lives in the attic. Her twenty-something daughters come and go as they please. Bestselling author Lesley Crewe has created a mixed-up, frantic, ultimately lovable East Coast family. But as Aunt Hildy would say, "Life is not something that needs to be tamed. It's messy. Always was, always will be".

Mabel Murple won the Ann Connor Brimer award for children's literature.

The threat of disaster has long been a fact of life for Atlantic Canadians, especially the countless numbers who earn their livelihoods on the unpredictable seas or in the volatile mines. And even with continuing improvements in technology, disasters can still strike at any time, as 1992's Westray mine explosion and 1998's Swissair crash have shown. A History of Disaster chronicles 43 of Atlantic Canada's most deadly disasters, many well-remembered and none ever forgotten. Included are not only the region's iconic disasters like the Halifax Explosion and the Springhill mine collapses, but also lesser-known events, such as the 1977 Saint John jail fire. Photos and illustrations of the aftermath, the rescue efforts, and in some cases, of the disaster itself, reveal the heartbreak and bravery that accompanied these life-altering catastrophes. Now in a new size.

It was a frigid night in February 2013 when the lights aboard the Miss Ally, a 12-metre fishing boat, malfunctioned. The Miss Ally's crew, five young men from southern Nova Scotia, knew a wicked storm was approaching, but they also had thousands of dollars of fishing equipment baited and set on the ocean floor. Instead of gunning for shore, they decided to stay until morning and try to locate their buoys, nets, and hooks by daylight; the decision proved fatal. Sometime overnight, following calls to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and their loved ones on land, the Miss Ally capsized. Despite an extensive search, the vicious winter storm prevented any form of rescue from sea or air, and all five fishermenKatlin Nickerson, Joel Hopkins, Cole Nickerson, Tyson Townsend, and Billy Jack Hatfieldwere lost at sea. Their bodies were never found.Through interviews with the crew's families and co-workers, the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Co-ordination Team, and members of the tight-knit fishing communities of Woods Harbour and Cape Sable Island, award-winning journalist Quentin Casey pieces together the night the Miss Ally foundered, weaving in the backstories and the aftermath of this tragic accident. Includes 10 black-and-white photos.
