"The Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters" is a succinct summary doctrine by which Buddhism was introduced to China. Each of the 42 sutras begins with “the Buddha said”. This particular sutra deals with “20 Difficult Things to Accomplish in this World” and Osho takes us through each verse, and dissects it line by line, never omitting to explain--in clear modern terms--the real meaning of the verses.

In the age of Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and email, personal letters seem somehow out of date, or at least far from most people''s everyday experience. This book is a rare and unique collection of letters personally written by Osho to participants from his early meditation events. These are not letters to people and their personalities, these are letters to our souls. Osho addresses essential issues and concerns that arise on the path of meditation and self-discovery. The letters are encouragements to continue the process of meditation, and address subjects like Self-Acceptance, Wisdom, Consciousness, The Quest for Life, A Life of Freedom, Earth Is Our Home, Dropping Fear!, Dealing with Anger, Rebellion, and many more in a direct and penetratingly personal way.Osho explains this about the value of writing letters:"If I write anything, I write letters, because a letter is as good as something that is spoken. It is addressed. I have not written anything except letters, because to me they are a manner of speaking. The other is always there before me when I write a letter."The OSHO works consist almost exclusively of the spoken word, addressed directly to individual people or larger audiences. These talks were recorded and then transcribed and published as books. This book represents one of the rare exceptions in the collected works of Osho, in which his written personal letters are published. Each one of these letters is like an condensed Osho Talk in haiku form.He would meet with these correspondents time and again at his meditation camps or while staying in their homes. This volume is a selection of his replies to their letters, queries, and calls for help. His words are intimate, incisive, poetic, playful, and loving. His encouragement to his correspondents to keep going on their chosen path of meditation and awareness while living, loving, and working in the ordinary world – to keep their flame of commitment burning brightly when he is not physically present – can inspire whomever opens this book.

One needs a very sympathetic ear and a very sympathetic heart to understand these beautiful parables, which are a rarity in Osho''s work because they don''t come from the talks that have made him so famous -- the parables are actually written by him. Mystics like Buddha and Jesus talked in parables -- and in his book Osho provides us with sixty parables, anecdotes, and stories that speak directly to us -- contemporary people of the modern age. These parables and their metaphors are all very simple, and because they are so simple they have a purity, they are unpolluted by complicated rationalizations of the modern mind. They are straightforward and direct, aimed to the heart like an arrow. In these parables Osho says in a poetic way things that cannot be said in prose. He is expressing things from the heart, things that cannot be expressed by the head. Each parable is a lesson to bring insights into one of the most important issues we face in life.As he points out, a parable is a way to talk in pictures and not in words. And in our dreams, we are again living in parables because the unconscious understands only pictures. Your conscious has become trained for language, words, but the unconscious is still that of a child. When a mystic like Osho wants to communicate something from his innermost depth to your innermost depth -- he uses parables. They function like a seed, hovering around the consciousness and emerging into sharp focus when our everyday life experiences bring an opportunity to apply their lessons. It is very easy to remember them.In the preface to this book, Osho writes: "What do I find when I look deeply into man? I find that man, too, is an earthen lamp! But he is not just a lamp made of clay; in him there is also a flame of light that is constantly rising towards the sun. Only his body is made of earth, his soul is that very flame."

Eleven classic anecdotes provide starting points to demonstrate the relevance of Zen to every aspect of 21st-century life. From the professor so full of his own ideas that he has no room for any new learning, to the monastery cook who solves a koan by kicking over a jug of water, readers will see themselves, their friends, and even modern-day celebrities and politicians reflected in the characters who populate these fascinating Zen stories. In each chapter, following the discussion of the story at hand, Osho responds to questions from his audience about matters of love, life, relationships, and “the search.” Throughout the book he emphasizes the importance both of honoring our "roots" in the simple pleasures of everyday life, and nourishing the "wings" that allow us to experience our connection with that which is universal, transcendent, and eternal.

Kabir is a 15th-century Indian mystic. Born a lower-caste weaver, Kabir opposed superstition, empty ritualism and bigotry. His teachings include scathing attacks against Brahmanical pride, caste prejudice and the very concept of untouchability, as well as exposing the dogmatism and bigotry he perceived around him. Unusually, even for his time, he was embraced by disciples who had been raised in both Hindu and Muslim traditions, who saw in him the embodiment of a life-affirmative approach that transcended the narrow dogmas that divide people and set them against one another. Here, Osho introduces readers to this extraordinary mystic and his songs, bringing both to light in such a way as to show how they are both timeless and utterly relevant to our time. The path of love as described by Osho, and though the songs of Kabir, is a journey that seeks out and celebrates the divine that is hidden in the ordinary, the love that becomes not just a feeling one has, but ultimately a state of being that one is.

Understanding our minds and consciousness are topics high on everybody''s list of important issues. Science and psychology are delivering every day captivating news of understanding in this area. In this extraordinary series of talks, Osho lays out a clear understanding of the difference between mind and consciousness, and the role that the brain plays in the two - a difference that Western science has been struggling to define for decades, but that Zen has known for centuries through first-hand experience. Along the way he also sheds light on the differences between meditation as practice and as a state of being, and what choiceless awareness really means in everyday life and relating.Osho relates to a classic Zen work, Hsin Hsin Ming, Verses on the Faith-Mind by Sosan [Seng-t’san] which is considered to be the first Chinese Zen document. It is extraordinarily straightforward in its message, cutting straight to the point of where it aims to take the Zen experience - to a state of thought-free awareness in the present moment.

While nonviolence is a philosophy to Mahatma Gandhi; it is not a philosophy to Osho, but an experience. Osho talks about his understanding of reverence for life, he does not use the word non-violence.

How to explore the higher states of consciousness? According to Osho there are not many ways to explore higher levels of consciousness, there is but one: the way of awareness. "Man is almost unconscious. I say “almost” – there are moments, situations where he becomes conscious, but they are momentary".

Osho analyses the function of the human mind in connection with meditation. Responding here to a question related to a space of 'no-mind' or mindfulness he says: "meditation covers a very long pilgrimage. When I say "meditation is witnessing", it is the beginning of meditation. And when I say "meditation is no-mind," it is the completion of the pilgrimage. Witnessing is the beginning, and no-mind is the fulfillment. Witnessing is the method to reach the no-mind. Naturally you will feel witnessing is easier. It is close to you. But witnessing is only like seeds, and then is the long waiting period. "

Watch and wait are two well known maxims from the world of meditation. Osho responds her to questions on ''Relaxing and Waking Up'' and ''The Difference between Instinct and Intuition''.It is the simplicity and personal impact which makes Osho''s works so accessible for every reader."In meditation you are not going anywhere. You are simply being here, relaxed, utterly centered in yourself. Everything stops. For this, no "how" is needed."

In the OSHO Singles series of selected talks, Osho addresses major questions and issues of our daily life. With depth and his usual humor we get a chance to look at an issue from a new perspective. Communication between lovers is an issue almost everybody has to deal with and Osho gives a very unique insight to this question:"Communication as such is difficult. Of course it is more difficult between lovers. But first you have to understand the general difficulty of communication. Each mind has been conditioned by different parents, different teachers, different priests, and different politicians...and when two minds try to communicate, as far as the ordinary mundane things are concerned, there is no difficulty. But the moment they start moving beyond things into the world of concepts, communication starts becoming more and more difficult."

Can hypnosis support meditation? This is the focus and question of this Osho Talk.Osho speaks about a time when hypnosis was a recognized door towards meditation. In the Middle Ages hypnosis was condemned alongside witchcraft. That condemnation still lingers on. Osho speaks here about hypnosis as a very helpful tool to enter into meditation. he discusses hypnosis and self-hypnosis as useful tools, combined with modern audio recording technology to support the process.

Time is that in which we live -- it is horizontal. It is from A to B to C to D; it is in a line. Eternity is vertical. It is not from A to B and from B to C. It is from A to more A to still more A. It goes on upwards. The moment is rare because it happens only when meditation has reached ripening, maturity, when you have touched your innermost core. The vertical line opens a door to eternity. Taken from a series: Hari Om Tat Sat, by Osho

Why am I always running so fast? Is there something that I don’t want to see?Listen to this amazing response from Osho and how he unfolds a deeper understanding for the questioner and us. " ...it is not only you; almost everybody is running as fast as he can from himself. And the problem is, you cannot run away from yourself. Wherever you go you will be yourself. The fear is of knowing oneself. It is the greatest fear in the world."

This book is about the starting point of all personal and spiritual growth, the realization of your own reality.Osho introduces George Gurdjieff, one of the most significant masters of this age. He used to say, "You are in prison." If you wish to get out of prison - the first thing you must do is realize that you are in prison... or you are the prison. Osho emphasizes this as something to be always remembered as one of the first principles for any seeker of truth. From a series of OSHO Talks titled: The Invitation. This OSHO Talk is complete in itself. Recorded at the Osho International Meditation Resort, Pune, India. The series The Invitation is available in audio format.

Intimacy generally refers to the feeling of being in a close personal association and belonging together. Everybody is afraid of intimacy. It is another thing whether we are aware of it or not. Intimacy means exposing yourself before a stranger. We are all strangers -- nobody knows anybody. We are even strangers to ourselves, because we don''t know who we are. This talk by Osho is an invitation to discover who you are.

Although Osho responds to a question related to compassion the main issue he addresses in this talk is ''love'' and he expands his response to elaborate a deeper understanding of sex, love and compassion. "Only compassion is therapeutic – because all that is ill in man is because of lack of love. All that is wrong with man is somewhere associated with love. He has not been able to love, or he has not been able to receive love. He has not been able to share his being. That’s the misery. That creates all sorts of complexes inside."

The qualities of a seeker of truth, the transmission of truth through spoken words, attachment to the physical presence of a master and a taste of silence are the subjects of this talk by Osho. "Every child is born with an innate search for truth. It is not something learned or adopted later on in life. Truth simply means, "I am, but I do not know who I am." And the question is natural -- "I must know the reality of my being." It is not a curiosity."

Osho responds to a question about the right way to help children to grow without interfering in their natural potentiality.

In this talk Osho takes his audience into the world of ZEN. "There are a few essential things which make Zen absolutely different from any kind of teaching. The most important of these essentials is that Zen is a revolution. All other religions are servants to the vested interests. The rich people and the powerful people, the politicians, have dominated all the religions. The priests have been nothing but servants to these criminals. It is such a worldwide conspiracy that no one recognizes it. It is so obvious and so simple that we are from the very beginning, from our very childhood, being programmed." From an original series: Rinzai: Master of the Irrational, by Osho.

Question: You say that love and hate are one; but I see more hate in the world than love. At the same time, you say that enlightenment is neither love nor hate. Are you speaking of two different qualities of love? How does this fit with your message of love?"Love and hate are just two sides of the same coin. But with love something very drastic has happened. It is unimaginable how this drastic step was taken by people who had all the good intentions in the world. You may never have even suspected what has destroyed love. It is the continuous teaching of love that has destroyed it. Hate is still pure -- love is not."

The story of Mojud which Osho introduces here is one of the greatest stories. It has that special flavor that only a Sufi story can have. It is incomparable. It is not just a story; Sufi stories are not just stories. They are not to entertain, but they are teaching devices. This story describes the path or the journey of spiritual discovery, personal transformation and growth.Osho says: "So listen to this story as attentively as possible. Let this story sink into your being. This story can open a door, this story can become such a radical change in your life that you may never be the same again. But the story has to be understood very minutely, very carefully, very lovingly, because it is a strange tale."

This eBook is a beautiful example and a fascinating insight into the work of a master with his audience of seekers. Osho responds to questions coming from his audience. A variety of questions and Osho''s responses give a taste of Osho''s insights and teachings on subjects of intelligence, the compulsion for power, questions re the personal experience of Osho and the ongoing game of questions and answers between the audience and Osho itself.

This is one of the most fascinating talks by Osho on meditation. We gain a deeper understanding and an actual experience about meditation through this talk which brings us into a space of meditation. He describes meditation as the very center of his teaching efforts; the very womb out of which one is going to be re-born. "To say something about meditation is a contradiction in terms. It is something which you can have, which you can be, but by its very nature you cannot say what it is. Still, efforts have been made to convey it in some way. Even if only a fragmentary, partial understanding arises out of it, that is more than one can expect." From a a series of talks: From Misery to Enlightenment, by Osho.

Osho describes love as transformation. It is painful because it transforms and transformation is going to be painful because the old has to be left for the new. While the old is familiar, secure, safe, the new is absolutely unknown. With love we will be moving in an uncharted ocean.
