Paul Ewald's 1916-1917 masterpiece `On the Foundations of Crystal Optics' describes the selfconsistent interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals on a molecular level. While astonishing in its detailed predictions for X-ray diffraction, full appreciation of the theory and its utility had to await much later advances in measurement techniques and crystal growth. Concepts introduced in the theory, now known as the Ewald sphere, Ewald summation, and Ewald-Oseen extinction, have become mainstays in diverse areas of modern physics. This memorial volume, with contributions by leading figures in the field, is an affectionate survey of his life, scientific work, and role in the international crystallographic community.

Structural crystallographic studies can determine not only the full stereochemistry of chemical species but also details of their arrangement in the crystal. Such geometrical data provide an essentIAl basis for the interpretation of chemical, physical and biological properties of chemical species. This volume contains key papers presented at the seventh symposium on organic crystal chemistry at Poznań in Poland. Among the themes discussed were factors influencing molecular conformation and polymorphism, chemical and biological activity, intermolecular interactions, crystal chemistry of polymers and molecular modelling.

The International School on Crystallographic Computing was held at the Bischenberg Congress Center, close to Strasbourg, in 1990. This was the twelfth such school organized since 1960 under the auspices of the IUCR Commission of crystallographic computing. The school was a satellite meeting to the XVth Congress of the International Union of Crystallography in Bordeaux, at which lecturers and tutors gave conferences and demonstrated their programs. In selecting the contents of the school, the program committee took into account the increasing emphasis on the study of macromolecules of biological interests, a natural progression of the clear success of crystallographic methodology in small molecule crystallography. Themes covered include synchrotron data collection, the potentiality of imaging plate technology coupled with efficient software, maximum entropy phasing methods, refinement using molecular dynamics, and map interpretation using structural databases. This is the latest volume in a series of highly regarded volumes based on lectures given at the International School of Computational Crystallography. Here, international contributors have collaborated to provide a unique record of the state-of-the-art in this important area of crystallography.

Modern experimental and computational techniques are capable of determining bond lengths and angles with precisions of a few thousandths of an oangström and a few tenths of a degree. Such precisions are meaningful only if they are coupled with rigorous error analysis and careful evaluation of the physical meaning of the parameters. Here, internationally respected authors present all modern experimental and computational techniques for the determination of accurate molecular structures for the first time in one volume. They establish guidelines for accuracy requirements in answering broadly varying questions in current chemical research.

This two-volume work forms a comprehensive treatise on the theory and applications of electron-diffraction techniques, and has been organized under the auspices of the Electron Diffraction Commission of the International Union of Crystallography. All those embarking on research which involves the use of electron diffraction methods, including graduate students and more experienced researchers who wish to add electron diffraction to their array of research tools will find this an invaluable reference. Volume 1 contains introductory chapters and the sections on electron diffraction which are less dependent on considerations of imaging in electron microscopes. Volume 2 deals with those aspects where there is a stronger correlation of the diffraction phenomena with the electron microscope imaging.

A window on modern crystallography presents contributions given at the Vesprém School on Crystallographic Computing June 1992, Balatonfúred, Hungary. Nineteen review articles cover subjects of topical interest in the state of crystallographic software. The application to crystallography of windowing techniques and object-oriented programming is treated for the first time in this series. Recent advances in powder diffraction techniques, both structure and solution, and refinement are discussed. The tricky problem of dealing with disorder in the interpretation of diffraction data is given clear coverage. Further, introductory texts explaining new features in program systems are included, and in an age of ever-increasing quantities of data, the rationale behind the standardization and portability of crystallographcic data through the use of CIF files is explained.

This volume presents reviews of topical areas in structural determination and structural chemistry, edited from the Proceedings of the 8th Symposium on Organic Crystal Chemistry, held at Poznan-Rydzyna, Poland in 1992.In this volume the definition of organic crystallography is interpreted widely to include factors influencing conformation, packing arrangements, and intermolecular bonding, as well as the determination of the positions and motions of the constituent atoms in molecular structures. An opening chapter introduces the edited proceedings which cover some of the most active areas in the structural determination and structural chemistry of small organic molecules in the crystalline state. The final chapter examines the current concerns of the adherents of organic crystallography and the future role and status of organic crystallography in structural science. The volume is divided into four sections: collection and treatment of diffraction data; crystalline-state reactions; structure correlation and structure-activity relations; and conformation, packing, and bonding in molecular crystals.
