Headlong Hall and Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love PeacockExplore the wit and wisdom of Thomas Love Peacock in this special edition containing two of his most celebrated works, Headlong Hall and Nightmare Abbey. In these brilliant satires, Peacock weaves humour and philosophy into tales that poke fun at the extremes of human thought, offering readers a timeless critique of intellectual fads and social quirks. In Headlong Hall (1815), Squire Headlong gathers an eccentric group of guests at his Welsh estate, where debates on progress, nature, and human folly unfold in comical fashion. With each character representing a distinct philosophical view, the novel invites readers to reflect on society’s tendency to cling to extremes—all while being thoroughly entertained.Nightmare Abbey (1818) shifts to a darker tone with Scythrop Glowry, a young Romantic grappling with melancholia, idealism, and unrequited love within the gloomy walls of his family mansion. Through Scythrop and his colourful companions, Peacock gently parodies the Romantic movement, particularly figures like Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron, highlighting the humour in their passionate ideals and existential woes. Both novels showcase Peacock’s unique style, blending clever dialogue, social satire, and memorable characters. His friendship with Shelley and his insightful critiques make these novels a fascinating look at Romantic-era thought—yet Peacock’s humour and insights feel just as relevant today. This edition, complete with thoughtful introductions and biographies, provides context for Peacock’s life and times, enriching the reading experience. Whether you are new to Peacock or revisiting his works, Headlong Hall and Nightmare Abbey promise a journey through satire, philosophy, and timeless human folly.Perfect for readers who enjoy classic satire, witty social commentary, and the rich intellectual landscape of the early 19th century.Edited with notes and an introduction by L. A. Davenport.

Witty, irreverent, and brilliantly satirical reimaginings of medieval legend, Maid Marian and The Misfortunes of Elphin are Thomas Love Peacock’s most playful and subversive novels. In Maid Marian (1822), Peacock transforms the Robin Hood legend into a riotous political and social satire. Here, Marian is no passive heroine but a bold and resourceful leader, outmatching both outlaws and aristocrats alike. Through razor-sharp dialogue and comic absurdity, Peacock ridicules the conventions of chivalry, monarchy, and feudal society, offering a refreshingly modern take on the legendary outlaw’s tale.In The Misfortunes of Elphin (1829), Peacock ventures into the mythical past of Wales, blending Arthurian romance, bardic tradition, and biting political satire. The hapless Prince Elphin, his formidable wife Angharad, and the ever-wise bard Taliesin navigate a world of floods, courtly intrigue, and an amusingly incompetent King Arthur. Filled with brilliantly anachronistic wit and wry observations on power and fate, this is Peacock at his most inventive.Brimming with mock-heroic adventure, literary parody, and philosophical humour, these two novels remain as subversive and entertaining today as when they were first published. This edition includes a new introduction that explores the historical and literary influences behind Peacock’s satire, making it an essential addition to the library of any lover of classic literature, Arthurian myth, or historical comedy.Perfect for lovers of Arthurian myth, Robin Hood retellings, and the playful satire of Cervantes and Swift.Edited with notes and an introduction by L. A. Davenport.

Two sparkling social satires on progress, tradition, and the absurdities of intellectual fashion.A master of comic wit and biting satire, Thomas Love Peacock turns his sharp eye to the ideological battles of 19th-century Britain in Crotchet Castle and Gryll Grange, his final two novels. Blending humour, erudition, and playful irreverence, these brilliant comedies explore the follies of intellectual fashion, the tension between modernity and tradition, and the eternal question of what makes a life truly worth living. In Crotchet Castle (1831), an eccentric country house becomes the stage for an animated clash of ideas, as economists, reformers, medievalists, and scientists debate the future of society. With a cast of unforgettable characters—including pompous political theorists, utopian dreamers, and champions of outdated aristocratic values—Peacock offers a hilarious yet insightful critique of grandiose ideologies and social dogma. In Gryll Grange (1860), Peacock’s final novel, the satire is softened with a charming reflection on love, leisure, and the simple pleasures of life. The cultured and independent-minded Mr. Falconer, weary of modernity’s relentless pace, chooses a life of quiet retreat—until romance and a new generation of reformers challenge his convictions. With its elegant prose, sparkling dialogues, and a subtle undercurrent of nostalgia, Gryll Grange is Peacock’s most philosophical and reflective work.Perfect for fans of Jane Austen’s comedy of manners, Oscar Wilde’s razor-sharp wit, and the intellectual playfulness of Laurence Sterne, Crotchet Castle & Gryll Grange showcases Peacock at his most incisive, entertaining, and relevant. This P-Wave Classics edition brings these two novels together in a single volume, making them available to a new generation of readers who delight in satire, conversation, and the pleasures of the mind.Edited with notes and an introduction by L. A. Davenport.

A romantic dreamer, a sceptical world and the perilous power of booksVolume I of a two-volume editionFirst published in 1752, Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella is one of the great comic novels of the eighteenth century. In Volume I of this restored two-volume edition, Arabella, the daughter of a marquess, forms her understanding of life and love from the heroic romances of seventeenth-century France. Convinced that noble suitors, desperate rivalries, and perilous adventures await her, she moves through the modern world guided by the logic of an earlier age, leaving confusion and fascination in her wake.Celebrated by Samuel Johnson and admired by Henry Fielding, Lennox’s novel is far more than a lively parody. It is a subtle and perceptive exploration of how reading shapes imagination, expectation, and desire, and of the freedoms and constraints placed upon women in eighteenth-century society. Arabella emerges as one of the most original heroines in English fiction: intellectually formidable, morally serious, and magnificently out of step with her time. This P-Wave Classics edition restores the novel in its original form, presenting a carefully established text based on the 1752 edition, with modernised spelling for clarity. Volume I includes a new introduction, an essay on The World of French Romance, and a detailed Glossary of the Romance World, offering readers a rich guide to the literary universe that shaped Arabella’s mind.Edited with notes and an introduction by L.A. Davenport.

A radical outsider, a fearless heroine and a society under scrutinyVolume II of a three-volume editionIn this second volume of Robert Bage’s Hermsprong; or, Man as He Is Not, social comedy deepens into moral confrontation. As Hermsprong’s plain speaking continues to unsettle rank and pretension, the tensions between principle and power grow sharper. Private affections and public authority collide, and the costs of sincerity in a hierarchical world become increasingly clear.Maria Fluart’s independence shines more boldly than ever, her intelligence and courage challenging the assumptions that seek to confine her. Around her, Bage exposes the fragile foundations of privilege, hypocrisy and inherited superiority.First published in 1796, Hermsprong remains one of the most daring and humane novels of the late Enlightenment. This new three-volume P-Wave Classics edition presents the text with a fresh introduction and extensive notes (printed in Volume I), restoring Bage’s remarkable novel to its full intellectual and historical resonance.Edited with notes and an introduction by L.A. Davenport.

A radical outsider, a fearless heroine and a society testedVolume III of a three-volume editionThe concluding volume of Robert Bage’s Hermsprong; or, Man as He Is Not brings its moral and emotional tensions to their fullest expression. As misunderstandings sharpen and authority hardens, the novel asks whether reason, equality and sincerity can prevail in a world shaped by pride and prejudice.Hermsprong’s steadfast integrity is tested, while Maria Fluart’s wit and courage prove central to the novel’s final reckoning. Bage’s satire gives way to resolution, yet his questions about power, justice and human conduct remain strikingly modern.First published in 1796, Hermsprong stands as one of the boldest works of late eighteenth-century fiction. This new three-volume P-Wave Classics edition presents the complete novel in its original format, with introduction and editorial notes printed in Volume I.Edited with notes and an introduction by L.A. Davenport.

In Volume II of Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella, Arabella’s romance-shaped imagination collides ever more dramatically with the realities of eighteenth-century society. Convinced that honour, jealousy, captivity, and heroic devotion govern the world around her, she interprets every encounter through the grand narratives of the French romances she adores, often with bewildering consequences for those who attempt to guide her towards common sense.Celebrated by Samuel Johnson and admired by Henry Fielding, Lennox’s novel is both witty and deeply perceptive, exploring the power of literature to shape not only our dreams but our understanding of the world itself. At its centre stands Arabella, a heroine of striking intelligence and independence, whose moral seriousness and imaginative conviction set her apart from those around her.Presented here in its original two-volume form, this P-Wave Classics edition offers a carefully established text based on the 1752 edition, with modernised spelling for readability. The introduction, essay on The World of French Romance, and Glossary of the Romance World appear in Volume I.Edited with notes and an introduction by L.A. Davenport.
