USA Today bestsellerEnglish professor and ex-spy Cameron Winter confronts a Big Tech billionaire to solve the suspicious suicide of a former student. The world of Big Tech is full of eccentric characters, but shamanic billionaire Gerald Byrne may be the strangest of the bunch. The founder of Byrner, a global social media platform, Byrne is known for speaking with vague profundity and for dabbling in esoteric spiritual practices; he wears his hair in a long black ponytail to reveal a large flower tattooed on his neck; he's universally admired as a visionary, a philanthropist, and a devoted husband and father. And every person who gets in the way of his good work seems to die. When a former student commits suicide, English professor and ex-spy Cameron Winter takes it upon himself to understand why. The young man was expelled from the university in an unfortunate episode that left Winter sympathetic to his plight; after a prolonged silence, he reached out to his teacher with two words just before taking the fatal plunge from the roof of his San Francisco apartment: "Help me."Winter has what he calls "a strange habit of mind"the ability to imagine himself into a crime scene, to reconstruct it mentally and play through various possible causes and outcomes to understand exactly what took place. When he applies this exercise to Adam Kemp's desperate final moments, he discovers a troubling inconsistency. And when he learns that Kemp was in a tumultuous relationship with Gerald Byrne's niece, he begins to suspect that the suicide was the result of a carefully-engineered plot, put in motion by the powerful businessman.Featuring the tough-but-learned protagonist from 2021's When Christmas Comes, A Strange Habit of Mind is a thrilling mystery set in the cutthroat world of tech money and tech influence, where unchecked fortunes produce unstoppable power for a lawless few.

A suspicious death has the hallmarks of witchcraft in this locked room mystery by a master of the genre. When Edward Stevens, an editor at Herald and Son's publishing house, learns of the mysterious events that befell his neighbor's rich uncle, he shrugs off their seemingly supernatural circumstances. He's a logical man and doesn't give much credence to claims of a ghostly figure visiting the man before his death, or the witch's ladder discovered under his pillow after he passed. But as suspicions of strange murder begin to creep in, it becomes harder for Stevens to ignore their eerie potential. His neighbor breaks into the cement-sealed crypt where his uncle is buried, only to learn that the corpse has vanished. Witness testimony further implicates the intrusion of the spirit world into the affair of the murdered uncle, and unsettling echoes of the past into the present push things even further past Stevens' understanding of reality. Will the events be logically explained, or is there something unexplainable at work? The answer lies in the pages of this atmospheric and haunting puzzler, which finds Carr, the master of the locked room mystery, operating at the peak of his powers.

In the wilderness bordering Afghanistan, an American soldier dies in a devastating explosion. Across the world, in a withering Pennsylvania factory town, his father is stabbed to death and left in the surrounding woods amidst colonial ruins known as Nowhere. The Recruiter wants Cameron Winter to find out why. All Winter wants now is a quiet, happy existence. He has met the woman he plans to marry. He has beaten the depression that sent him into therapy. He's enjoying a job at a midwestern university, teaching the poetry he loves. Then his old boss, the hunted former leader of a group of US government assassins, suddenly reappears and asks him to set that life aside and return instead to the work he did as a government agent: the work of turning bad men into dead men. Winter journeys into America's aching heartland, to a small town called Kinnecombe, abandoned by business, betrayed by the government, and left to suffer through a triple plague of poverty, drugs, and crime. His assignment is to solve a murder, and all that stands in his way is a deceptively soft-spoken gangster, a mob of local thugs, an American spy as crazy as she is beautiful, and a well-trained killer who can make himself invisible right up until the moment he puts a bullet in your brain. If Winter wants to reclaim his dream life, he'll first have to remember how to be an assassin, or else find himself in Nowhere, just as dead as the town that wants him gone.

Amor Towles selects the best mystery short stories of the year, including tales by Andrew Child, Jeffery Deaver, and T.C. Boyle. In his introduction to this volume, guest editor Amor Towles pays tribute to the forgotten person of the mystery storythe cadaver. "Male or female, old or young, rich or poor," he writes, "for over a hundred years the cadaver has been accommodating, gracious, and generally on time. There is no other figure in crime who has proven to be more reliable."Like the cadaver, this anthology series, now in its third year of publication, is also proving reliable, bringing to readers the finest mystery/crime/suspense stories of the year from a variety of sources including mystery and general interest magazines, anthologies, online publications, and literary periodicals.Among the treasures collected herein are Jeffery Deaver's "Dodge," in which a chess match between a volatile woman and a U.S. marshal takes a surprise twist; "The Landscaper's Wife," a suspense-filled tale by Brendan DuBois that explodes all expectation; and Kerry Hammond's "Strangers at a Table," which offers a darkly witty homage to Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. The collection contains well-known authors such as T.C. Boyle and up-and-comers such as Jessi Lewis; it features tales with famous crime-fighters (Jack Reacher and Sherlock Holmes) and a bonus story from the annals of mystery history by Edith Wharton. In short, these pages promise something for every reader of crime fiction, no matter the particularities of his or her taste.

A Texas businessman travels to the furthest reaches of post-Soviet Russia in search of the country's new wealth and finds new dangers as well. Based on true events. After the demise of the Soviet Union, the newly-established Russian government privatized its industry by issuing vouchers to all of its citizens, allowing them the chance to be shareholders in the country's burgeoning businesses. The slips are distributed among the population and auctions are arranged where they can be exchanged for actual shares. For the country's rural populations living in abject poverty, the vouchers appear to be little more than pieces of paper, totally separated from the far-off concept of potential future fortunes. But for Texas businessman John Mills and his Czech companion, Petr Kovac, the seemingly-valueless chits suggest a lucrative potential, worth much more than what the current owners are willing to sell them for. They travel to the furthest, coldest reaches of the country to acquire vouchers for the country's national oil company, Gazneft, roving from town to town with suitcases full of cash. But they quickly learn that the plan has complications for example, the fact that the auctions at which these vouchers are traded for actual shares have been planned at the most remote, inaccessible locations possible to deter outsiders from buying in. And when the Russian mafia and the oligarchs in charge of Gazneft catch wind of their successes, the stakes become suddenly more deadly.A thrilling adventure inspired by true events, The Siberia Job charts a course through one of the most impactful periods in recent Russian history, whose reverberations continue to be felt in the present day.
