» p 76 - Professeur Jean Tulard, Bibliographie Critique Sur Des Mémoires Sur Le Consulat Et L’Empire, Droz, Genève, 1971

Hailed as one of Goodis’s best works, this is a gripping crime novel about a disgraced airline pilot who has sunk to the lower depths of existence. Disaster trails the forlorn Cassidy like a hellhound. His self-destructive pattern results not only in self-torment but drags two women, Mildred and Doris, down into the gutter with him. Set in the hard streets of Philadelphia, Goodis’s home ground, Cassidy’s Girl entails blackmail, murder and the usual rough stuff, endowing his icy streets and wretched shanties with expressionistic intensity.“Goodis’s characters are...bad-dream Bogarts on the far ledge of existence...A strange world where...there are only two kinds of people...the wounded and the slain.”—Mike Wallington“David Goodis is the mystery man of hardboiled fiction.”—Geoffrey O’Brien“Action and thrills!”—San Francisco Call-Bulletin

William Cobbett was widely considered to be one of the most contentious figures who animated the political scene in the early 19th century. A self-educated man, “born and bred at the tail of the plough”, he equipped himself for public life in the hard school of experience, scorning what he called “those dens of dunces called Colleges and Universities”. Although he was always a storm-centre of controversy, Cobbett was no mere ‘agitator’. He enlisted in the Army and rose to the most difficult of all ranks to attain and hold—that of Sergeant-Major. His warm-hearted concern for the underdog was the motive which led him, after leaving the Army, to compile, for the benefit of his old comrades, the book called “The Soldier’s Friend.”In Cobbett’s time, the blight of the Industrial Revolution was settling upon the English countryside and, in the quest for firsthand knowledge, Cobbett set out on the tour of investigation which he recorded in his celebrated “Rural Rides”. He founded the “Political Register” in which, for 30 years, he set an exuberant standard of political journalism, and on all the major issues of his time, and especially that of Parliamentary Reform, he proved a formidable protagonist and pamphleteer. This biography of Cobbett is an animated study of one of the most vivid and picturesque figures in English social history.

First published in 1961, this is the autobiography of Harpo Marx, the silent comedian of The Marx Brothers fame.Writing of his life before, during, and after becoming famous by incorporating lovely and humorous stories and anecdotes, Harp Marx tells of growing up in a rough neighborhood and being poor, being bullied and dropping out of school, teaching himself to read, write, tell time, and to play the piano and harp.He speaks of his close relationships with his family members, particularly his mother and brother Leonard (Chico), who would become his partner-in-crime on screen, and the profound effect that the death of his parents Sam and Minnie had on him.Filled with insider tales of his antics on and off stage, and the hard graft he and his brothers put into reaching their level of success, the reader becomes privy to a rare glimpse into Marx’ thoughts on everything and everyone he had the privilege of working with. The book reveals the friendships he forged and the blows he was dealt in show-business, and of his marriage to his wife, actress Susan Fleming, with whom he adopted four children and built a ranch on which they lived happily ever after, along with numerous animals.A thoroughly enjoyable read.“This is a riotous story which is reasonably mad and as accurate as a Marx brother can make it. Despite only a year and a half of schooling, Harpo, or perhaps his collaborator, is the best writer of the Marx Brother. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal“A funny, affectionate and unpretentious autobiography done with a sharply professional assist from Rowland Barber.”—New York Times Book Review“This is a racy autobiography by the mute Marx Brother with the rolling eyes, oversized pants and red wig who could send a glissando reeling over his harp.[…] It is enjoyable reading and polished writing...”—Kirkus Review

Originally published in 1928, this book forms an excellent and detailed account of the Zambesi Expeditions of 1858-63. The book is based mainly on the daily journal kept by Sir John Kirk, Livingstone''s lieutenant on the Expedition. It contains much material which was not given to the public in Livingstone''s description. Kirk was one of the first explorers to carry a camera, and the book is illustrated from his own photographs.

First published in 1954, this is the Second Edition of the single-volume amalgamation of husband-and-wife team Marjorie and Charles Quinnells’ three-volume anthology on Greek antiquity, originally between 1929-1932: Everyday Things in Homeric Greece, Everyday Things in Archaic Greece, and Everyday Things in Classical Greece.Part I tells of the Trojan War and of the heroes who sustained the Greeks in their early struggles, with Homer cited as the main source.Part II deals with the Archaic period (about 560 to 480 B.C.) ending with the great struggle between Greeks and Persians which culminated in the victory of the Greeks at Salamis, as related in the History of Herodotus.Part III begins with the story of how the Greeks went to work after Salamis and built on the well-laid foundations a civilization which ever since has been regarded as Classical and closes with the account in the History of Thucydides of the struggle between Athens and Sparta and the failure of the Athenian Expedition to Sicily.A comprehensive study of Ancient Greek History, revised in this edition by Greek authority Kathleen Freeman.“In this book we have attempted to show some of the beautiful products of these artists, and their use in everyday life. It is our hope that the boys and girls who read it will discover that the Greeks were not a people extremely foreign and remote, who spoke a difficult language, but folk much like themselves, who lived and worked and played in the surroundings and among the objects we have depicted and described.”—Preface

THE TWELVE OLYMPIANS, originally published in 1952, gives a new account of the twelve chief gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece, and of the myths and gay stories told about them, which, recounted and referred to again and again in prose and poetry, are woven closely into the world’s greatest literature.Dr. Seltman points out that the high entertainment value of these myths should not be allowed to conceal the fact that these deities were Realities, not only to the Greeks but also to the early Christians, who believed in them as bad gods or demons. He shows the weaknesses in the religious framework of Greek Paganism, which, lacking a professional priesthood and an orthodox dogma, ultimately faded away, even though, judged by the customs and standards of the time, it was a moral, benevolent and humanist faith. He explains also the Greek attitude to sex and nudity, particularly in connection with athletics. A chapter is devoted to each deity, and there is a final chapter describing Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the gods. The book will be of great value to students; but its easy style will commend it equally to general readers who may lack the background of a classical education. The author firmly believes that knowledge of the Ancient Greek faith in the Twelve Olympians can contribute to the troubled world of today, which still hungers for humanism. The volume is illustrated with photogravure reproductions of statues and vase-paintings, including several little known except to the expert; there is also a map.

In The Ethics of Rhetoric, Richard M. Weaver evaluates the ethical and cultural role of rhetoric and its reflection on society. Weaver draws upon classical notions of rhetoric in Plato’s Phaedrus, and he examines the effectiveness and implications of the manipulation of language in the works of Lincoln, Burke, and Milton. In this collection of essays, Weaver examines how different types of rhetoric persuade, their varying levels of effectiveness and credibility, and how one’s manner of argumentation and style of persuasion are indicative of character. Ultimately, Weaver argues that the cultivation of pure language creates pure people.Initially published in 1953, The Ethics of Rhetoric remains timeless in its evaluation of rhetoric’s role in society.

Originally published in 1951, this book by Dr. Sidney V. Haas, who introduced banana feeding in the therapy of celiac disease, and his son, Dr. Merrill P. Haas, represents the most extensive report published at the time on the subject. The first two-thirds of the book deal with the historical aspects of the problem, the various theories of etiology, and the methods of treatment proposed by different workers in the field. The final part of the book is devoted to the authors’ own experience and opinions, with comparisons of therapeutic results and prognosis on the basis of differences in dietary management.“[T]he subject is treated comprehensively and objectively. The writers’ style is clear and direct, and their approach to controversial aspects of the problems of celiac disease is fair and judicious.”—JAMA Internal Medicine, January 1952

In To the Actor Michael Chekhov has recorded brilliantly the results of his many years of experimenting, testing and verifying in the professional theater and schools of the theater. He brings to actors far greater insight into themselves and the characters they are to portray, which enables them to approach any role with new ease and skill.“To the Actor is by far the best book that I have read on the subject of acting. Actors, directors, writers and critics will be grateful for it. It should prove enlightening to theatergoers who wish to deepen their appreciation for fine acting and thus help to invigorate the theatrical art.”—Gregory Peck“I think without a doubt every creative person in the theater will want to have it as a constant reference book, outside of its being, in my opinion, absorbing and entertaining reading.”—Yul Brynner (from the Preface)“One of the most remarkable and practical books on the technique of acting I have ever read....Enthusiastically recommended to all theatre collections of whatever size.”—Library Journal

Throughout his career as composer, conductor, and pianist, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was an intensely private individual. When Bertensson and Leyda’s 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of Rachmaninoff’s life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him.The authors consulted a number of people who knew Rachmaninoff, who worked with him, and who corresponded with him. Even with the availability of such sources and full access to the Rachmaninoff Archive at the Library of Congress, Bertensson and Leyda were tireless in their pursuit of privately held documents, particularly correspondence. The wonderfully engaging product of their labors masterfully incorporates primary materials into the narrative.Almost half a century after it first appeared, this volume remains essential reading.Sergei Bertensson, who knew Rachmaninoff, published other works on music and film, often with a documentary emphasis.

Catherine Drinker Bowen was a Philadelphian with music in her veins....Into this book she has crammed the joy, comedy, and desperation of a musical life. With the skill of a biographer she sums up the human equation in music with insatiable enthusiasm. She discourses on amateur quartets, fiddlers, wild-eyed cellists, wives who play violas and children who bang the box. This is a book which musicians will chortle over, a book which the layman will read with dawning delight.

Duddington Pell Chalmers is a young man of taste, class, and girth. As trustee for a local art museum, he is called in by police when the troublesome curator is murdered and soon finds himself at odds with the official enquiry. There is no shortage of suspects among local artists, art dealers, and collectors, while motives become muddled when it is discovered that murder was not the only crime. Chalmers knows that time is of the essence, or the police will arrest his artist friend, bringing ruin to a bright career, but can he follow the clues to unmask the murderer?

LIEUTENANT PAT ABBOTT and his lovable but slightly rattle-brained wife, Jean, have become about the most popular couple in murder fiction today. In The Indigo Necklace, Frances Crane takes them to New Orleans, where a huge wartime population has overflowed into the famous French quarter, steeped in tradition and old-world ceremony. When murder is done amidst these incongruous elements, it takes ingenious sleuthing indeed to unravel the crime!Pat Abbott and his Jean are paying guests of a proud old Creole family, luxuriating in the charm of their surroundings, when Jean discovers a body at her very doorstep. Before the Lieutenant unmasks the murderer, the Abbotts meet a fascinating array of aristocrats and scoundrels, including a police chief, drawn from life, who will become a permanent member of the Abbott troupe.

First published in 1948, renowned British Empire historian Coupland describes, with swift and vivid strokes, the situation between whites and blacks, the great military qualities and terrifying military tactics of the Zulu warriors and the characters of the Englishmen, soldiers and politicians, involved in the disaster. Having prepared the reader with consummate art and scholarship, he then sets the great action in that strange, eerie land, until the reader can truly feel that he has lived through it himself. The aftermath brings him to Rorke’s Drift and the gallant British stand that averted irretrievable disaster.A first-rate account of the battle.

First published in 1931, this book by archaeologist David Randall-MacIver provides a detailed description of Greek architectural sites in southern Italy and Sicily, together with narratives on the cities where the sites are found, including their mythologies and most famous citizens, visitors and political figures.“MY IDEA in writing this book has been to supply a need which others must have felt besides myself. The scholarly visitor to Lower Italy and Sicily has up till now been obliged to take his choice between travelling with a large, though always inadequate, library and travelling with nothing more than a Baedeker. There existed no single volume in which he could find all those details of topography and local archaeology which are the first interest of any man who retains a love for classical literature and a feeling for the romance of Greek history.”—Preface

In 1921, author David Randall-MacIver moved to Rome in order to focus on Italian archaeology, the result of which is this is this fascinating and detailed study of the history of the Etruscans, first published in 1927.The Etruscan civilization is the modern name given to a powerful, wealthy and refined civilization of ancient Italy in the area corresponding roughly to Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. As distinguished by its unique language, this civilization endured from before the time of the earliest Etruscan inscriptions (c. 700 BC) until its assimilation into the Roman Republic, beginning in the late 4th century BC with the Roman-Etruscan Wars.Culture that is identifiably Etruscan developed in Italy after about 800 BC, approximately over the range of the preceding Iron Age Villanovan culture. The latter gave way in the 7th century to a culture that was influenced by ancient Greece, Magna Graecia, and Phoenicia. At its maximum extent, during the foundational period of Rome and the Roman Kingdom, Etruscan civilization flourished in three confederacies of cities: of Etruria, of the Po Valley with the eastern Alps, and of Latium and Campania. The decline was gradual, but by 500 BC the political destiny of Italy had passed out of Etruscan hands. The last Etruscan cities were formally absorbed by Rome around 100 BC.Although the Etruscans developed a system of writing, their language remains only partly understood, and only a handful of texts of any length survive, making modern understanding of their society and culture heavily dependent on much later and generally disapproving Roman sources. The Etruscan elite grew very rich through trade with the Celtic world to the north and the Greeks to the south, and filled their large family tombs with imported luxuries. Archaic Greece had a huge influence on their art and architecture, and Greek mythology was evidently very familiar to them.

Dating from the beginning of historical memory, the obelisks of ancient Egypt—those tall, tapering shafts typically weighing from 200 to 500 tons—were carved from a single block of solid stone to commemorate the ruler of the moment. Many of these ancient monoliths, taken from Egypt as trophies of conquest and symbols of power through the efforts of extraordinary human labor and engineering ingenuity, were re-established in the capitals and seats of empire that also inherited Egypt’s burden of civilization. While near the climax of their historical potency, obelisks were erected by Alexandria, Nineveh, Constantinople, Rome, Paris, London, New York, etc.Fascinating as obelisks are as tracers of world history, the methods by which they have been moved and raised from ca. B.C. 1500 to A.D. 1880 (when the New York obelisk was raised) are more interesting still, and this epic history and associated engineering feats are encapsulated in this volume. The book records information, as far as we have it, on the building of the pyramids and the moving of the obelisks, together with various conjectures. What is certain is that the obelisks were moved great distances by man power alone. We do have a full record of the moving of the Vatican obelisk in 1586 from several contemporary accounts, most especially that of the project’s deviser and chief engineer, Domenico Fontana, and this move is the central concern of the book: it details how Fontana, with the enthusiastic backing of Pope Sixtus V, solved the problem by utilizing 48 capstans spread over what is now St. Peter’s Square, turned by the combined muscle power of men and horses.Full accounts are also given of the Paris, London, and New York obelisks. Of particular interest here are the various methods—including a pontoon built around a prone obelisk—by which the monoliths were transported on the high seas.Contemporary engravings are reproduced throughout.

First published in 1961, this book provides a contemporary definition of race, the distinction between geographical, local and micro-races, as well as consideration of the major evolutionary mechanisms of race formation in man.Author Professor Stanley M. Garn was and remains a pivotal figure in the history of biological interpretations of race. He considered racial classification based on physical traits to be imprecise, and believed physical traits to be independent of each other, making classification by the assumption that a population shares certain traits incorrect. He also argued that racial classifications based on physical type seemingly elevated some physical traits to a racial status, but glossed over others, and concluded that racial classifications based on physical type can always be compartmentalized into smaller populations which share more physical traits in common. Thus, here in his book Human Races, he used three gradations of racial classification which were increasingly more specific in scope: geographical, local and micro.“Human Races is an attempt to describe what race is, and the mechanisms of racial differentiation in man. It will, I hope, help to dispel the antiquated notions of three “original” races, of the persistence of racial types, and of the role of undirected chance in bringing about racial differences. In their stead, I trust will emerge the contemporary picture of man’s genetic response to local selective factors, the constantly changing nature of the natural populations we call races.”—Author’s Preface

Albert Pinkham Ryder, along with Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, is recognized as one of the great “ancestors” of American painting, although he was largely unknown in his own time. Twentieth-century taste discovered him and his mystical pictures have had a profound effect on modern abstract art.Lloyd Goodrich is Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art under whose auspices his definitive biography of Thomas Eakins was published in 1933. For many years Mr. Goodrich has been carrying on research in the life and work of Albert P. Ryder, in preparation for a definitive biography. Since Ryder’s work has been widely forged, with the forgeries outnumbering the genuine pictures about eight to one, this study has involved examination of hundreds of paintings, using x-rays and other scientific methods. The present volume, originally published in 1959, has the advantage of these years of thorough study.

First published in its original Dutch version in 1953, this is the English translation of Een helicopter daalde, which tells the story of a family in the Netherlands caught up in the middle of the 1953 North Sea flood disaster, brought on by a heavy storm that occurred on the night of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of Sunday, 1 February 1953. The floods struck the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Scotland.A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide; the combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure led to a water level of more than 5.6 metres (18.4 ft) above mean sea level in some locations. The flood and waves overwhelmed sea defences and caused extensive flooding. The Netherlands, a country with 20% of its territory below mean sea level and 50% less than 1 metre (3.3 ft) above sea level and which relies heavily on sea defences, was worst affected, recording 1,836 deaths and widespread property damage. Most of the casualties occurred in the southern province of Zeeland.Although this book is classed as a children’s novel, it will appeal to readers from eight to eighty years old.

First published in 1935, this is the full and frank account of author George Solomon’s service to the Soviet Government during the Russian Civil War.Solomon, who was named First Secretary to the Commissar for Commerce and Industry, Leonid Borisovich Krasin, in July 1918, provides a detailed record of his time with the Red Autocrats, beginning with assuming his new position and his first meeting with L. B. Krasin in Germany in July of 1918, being welcomed as an enemy in his native Russia in June 1919, to representing the Commission of Administration to take over all the business transactions in Estonia in August 1920 and, finally, arriving in England in June 1921, before his retirement from service on August 1, 1923.

Originally published in 1952, here a distinguished trial lawyer makes you a participant in the high drama of four notable twentieth-century American criminal cases. You are on the scenes of the crimes; you accompany the detectives investigating them, and in your most important role you sit as “the thirteenth juror” at the trials of the accused. With professional sureness, Francis X. Busch cuts through the fog of sensation and rumour that has surrounded all these cases to bring you what happened as it happened. You are in the box to hear the great Clarence Darrow plead with all his power and brilliance for the freedom of the labor leader William Haywood, and for the lives of youthful Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold. You watch a procession of witnesses testifying in an atmosphere of growing tension that Sacco and Vanzetti were—or were not—participants in a payroll murder. You are present at the Lindbergh home the night little Charles, Jr., disappears from his crib. You follow the skilful police work that led to the arrest of Bruno Hauptmann and the amazing expert testimony that point to guilt. In each case you understand every aspect of the threefold drama of crime, investigation and trial: the background of time and place, the force of prejudice for or against the defendants, the importance of the verdict to the whole country. Was justice always done? You have the facts presented fairly; the judgment is yours. With you the author withholds his opinion until the final pages of every trial.Mr. Busch is a nationally famous expert on trial strategy and tactics. He shares with the amateur an ever-fresh sense of the unique drama in every case where human life or liberty is in the balance. From an overwhelming mass of course material he has reduced these cases to their essential of fact, human interest, excitement, suspect and sympathy. They come to you as thrilling stories, exactly true and understandable by all.
