This book is a tribute to the artist's return to his birthplace, to the place of his childhood, once filled with happiness; to the streets of his tenuous survival during World War II, and to the memorial for his grandparents and father. Bak's journey was marked by memories and profound sadness and a great awareness of his responsibility to express the spirits of all who were destroyed during the Holocaust. Scholar Lawrence L. Langer provides commentary on the rich symbolic significance and uniqueness of the artist's work.

As an immigrant artist of Jewish background, who borrowed freely from Christology, Jewish, mystical, and modernist motifs, David Aronson has been an equally acclaimed controversial figure in the Boston Expressionist school and beyond. Defying all clear categorization, his highly evocative art moves precariously between the realms of the religious the secular, between Judaism and humanism, tradition and modernity. This book includes rich reproductions of Aronson's works done in encaustic, pastel, coal and bronze. It also contains Aronson's 1967 lecture ""Real and Unreal: The Double Nature of Art,"" which offers a unique testimony of the intellectual background of his creative oeuvre. An interpretive essay by Asher Biemann of the University of Virginia places Aronsons work and biography in an historical, cultural, and intellectual context and comments on specific aspects of his art. Provocative and thoroughly documented, this volume will be of interest to scholars of history, Judaism, and religion, as well as to a general audience.

The art of Samuel Bak depicts a world destroyed and yet provisionally pieced back together. Across nearly seven decades of artistic production Samuel Bak has explored and reworked a set of metaphors, a visual grammar and vocabulary, that ultimately privileges questions. Bak's pictorial readings invite reconsideration of the Post-Reformation privileging of word over image, and of the Post-Enlightenment privileging of reason over experience. Bak preserves memory of the twentieth century ruination of Jewish life and culture by way of an artistic passion and precision that stubbornly announces the creativity of the human spirit.

Common wisdom has it that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in this series of paintings artist Samuel Bak wonders: can a word be worth a thousand pictures? Words are constructed from letters, which stem from hieroglyphic representations of the world around us. The use of letters, words, and sentences in art is not the domain only of comics and cartoons. Examples exist in medieval art, in the art of the post-Impressionists, the Cubists, the Dadaists, the Conceptualists, and more. Bak has always integrated letters and words into his art, incorporating both Hebrew and English characters, cleverly visualizing turns of phrase, and playing on multiple meanings and double entendres. In this series, the letters of the word hope appear in various conditions and ambiguous states—sometimes monumental, sometimes disguised, unnaturally large or unusually small, at times solid and whole, at other times broken and in disarray. They are both impish and foreboding, sometimes clearly presented and other times defying order or even recognition. They are wounded yet resilient, detached but seeking connection.Four simple letters—H, O, P, E—belie the significance and complexity of the word they spell. Is hope something we find or something we build? We dwell in a world that shapes us as we shape it and this interactive dimension applies to the feeling of hope, familiar to every human being who has ever anticipated, wished, or expected. For Bak, the work of building hope, or believing in the hope that others offer, requires engaging with the discarded and broken pieces of a previously trusted world now irrevocably shattered by the Holocaust. In landscapes, still lifes, and figural works, Bak gathers the layered elements of hope for us to contemplate and reminds us that they hold within and among them a promise for rebuilding and renewal. At best, hope is a wager of trust embodied in the venture of going forth. In his essay, Henry Knight guides us through the multivalent forms of hope in Bak’s work, asks us to question what we see and look beyond the visible, endeavors to define what hope after the Holocaust looks like, and teaches us that the process of creation after destruction represented by Bak’s work is itself the ultimate act of hope.

Art & Life: The Story of Samuel Bak traces the development of a child prodigy deeply shaped by the catastrophic events of the Shoah, from his early artistic influences to his years in the Vilna Ghetto and Landsberg DP Camp, his formal training in Israel and Paris, and his fruitful art career in Rome, New York, Switzerland, and Boston. Augmenting the rich existing literature on Bak, Art & Life explores—in thoughtful prose and through reproductions of both iconic and rarely seen work created between 1942 and 2022—how he navigated the prevailing art trends of the mid-twentieth century in search of his own pictorial language. It considers the personal, historical, and artistic currents that led Bak, now aged 90, to create an astonishing body of work that bears witness to cataclysmic events, embodies our common humanity of suffering and hope, and poses questions about the repair of the world.

Being born into a traditional Japanese artistic family means inheriting more than just a craft—it includes a family name, artistic style, tools, property, clientele, and a deep-rooted legacy. The Takatori lineage dates back over 400 years and began when Korean potter Hachizo was brought to Japan by warlord Kuroda Nagamasa to produce ceramics for the powerful Kuroda domain. Through generations, the Takatori potters weathered political turmoil and shifts in patronage, evolving to meet the aesthetic demands of the tea ceremony elite. Today, Miraku Kamei XV balances the Takatori tradition with modernization amid economic and urban change. Andrew Maske’s book explores fifteen generations of this family of master potters, honoring their history, identity, and innovative expression.

Showcases the distinctive work of one of the most innovative artists of our time. Samuel Bak's most recent series of paintings, "New Perceptions of Old Appearances", is a tribute to the power of the metaphorical imagination. Using the pear as a substitute image for the familiar apple of Eden, Bak explores the struggle of modern civilization to wrest from our fragile universe a viable mode of communal existence. Bak's pears are stoic in their solidity, but vulnerable to decay. In some guises they shine with the beauty of succulent fruit, but in others they fall victim to the violence of history and the decay of time. In this book - filled with color illustrations - Lawrence L. Langer shows the versatility and uniqueness of Bak's art. His pears play many roles, challenging the viewer to interpret their enigmatic presences without having to search for a single dogmatic meaning. While some, laden with promise, proclaim the inherent dignity of artistic form, others remind us, as they are consumed by fire or sacrificed on strange altars, of what Bak has called the ""ineffaceable tragedy and sadness"" that has been part of our lot as human creatures during the past hundred years. His images are both ripe with life and haunted by death. Samuel Bak had his first exhibition at the age of nine in the Vilna Ghetto. After emigrating to Israel, he studied at the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums in the United States, Israel, and Europe. Books about his work include ""Landscapes of Jewish Experience: Paintings by Samuel Bak"" and ""The Book of Genesis in the Art of Samuel Bak"". Lawrence L. Langer is Alumnae Chair Professor of English Emeritus at Simmons College. His publications include ""The Holocaust and the Literary Imagination"", ""Holocaust Testimonies: The Ruins of Memory"", ""Art from the Ashes: A Holocaust Anthology"", and ""Preempting the Holocaust"".

In this examination of Samuel Bak's most recent collection of paintings inspired by the little boy from the famous Stroop Report photo taken in the Warsaw Ghetto in April 1943, Gary A. Phillips and Danna Nolan Fewell consider the historical and visual implications of this iconic image and its contemporary evocations. A survivor of the Vilna liquidation and a child prodigy whose first exhibition was held in the Vilna Ghetto at age nine, Bak weaves together personal history and Jewish history to articulate an iconography of his Holocaust experience. Bak's art preserves memory of the twentieth-century ruination of Jewish life and culture by way of an artistic passion and precision that stubbornly announces the creativity of the human spirit.

A mobile artist who lives and works in Boston, Mark Davis was drawn to the act of creating as a young boy. The discovery of Alexander Calder’s work at the age of fourteen had a deep influence on Davis’s early work, which consisted of stylized jewelry pieces, and has had a consistent presence throughout his career. In this lavishly illustrated volume, plants, animals, humans, and landscapes develop within the brightly colored and abstracted shapes that make up Davis’s body of work today. Vibrant palettes and abstracted sheets of metal are composed to create self-contained, kinetic narratives. Davis explores the three-dimensional spaces his work exists within, as well as his own internal dialogue through these kinetic scenes. Tapping into the joyful and childlike side of his audience allows Davis to convey a personal philosophy about his life: you can experience heavy and difficult challenges but eventually transform them to achieve balanced and uplifting results. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, and educated at Goddard College in Vermont, Davis’s dexterous metalwork is entirely self-taught. In addition to moderate-scale pieces of movement, color, and grace, Davis also creates large-scale public and private commissions, including Healing Waters, an outdoor installation at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

Samuel Bak’s recent collection considers the hidden dialogue of generations, with the secret entanglement of different ages. It is indeed a playful cycle, whose playfulness, and even parody, becomes apparent to the beholder literate in Jewish memory and religious imagination. Bak’s images are replete with allusions, citations, intimate references, playing with themes that are as intuitive as they are rooted in Jewish learning and tradition. In his illuminating essay, Lawrence Langer reminds us that Bak thinks of his work as ‘learned paintings’ disclosing themselves, like sacred texts, in layers of meaning corresponding to the layers of learning. Langer beautifully unravels some of their themes, taking us through the worlds of Torah and Chassidism, to the ‘elsewhere’ of the modern age."—Asher D. Biemann, professor of religious studies, University of Virginia

In this series of paintings and drawings, Lady Just Is appears in varying conditions, poses, and garbs juxtaposed with familiar biblical and secular symbols of covenant in states of ruination: faded and cobbled rainbows, disintegrating Mosaic tablets of law, unblinking and stony eyes, sagging and unkempt blindfolds, defunct and imbalanced scales. Presiding over a landscape of devastation, these images are a graphic reminder of the precariousness of justice, and how justice loses its agency when it turns a blind eye to, or even becomes actively complicit in, the worst injustices. But they are also a hopeful contravention against the emotional and physical wreckage, a reminder that the restoration of the world, tikkun olam, is possible through the gathering and reassembly of the shards. Lady Just Is, shown to us through the hand of the artist, seeks to engagethe viewer in a new moral law that stands squarely amid, not above or removed from, the destruction.
