The interlude between the Second World War and the "Hippie" era is generally known as the Silent Generation, its children regarded as conservative, quiet and obedient, at least on the surface. Wheatley peers beneath the surface and reveals a childhood when, despite the presence of the bombed houses and streets of Swansea, "rationing" that continued into the mid-fifties, and austerity - girls especially were wonderfully free to play outside, having play fights, making dens, exploring their sexuality and climbing trees. The reader is led on a journey through earliest childhood playing among the derelict bombed buildings as the war closes, through schooldays when discipline was strict and girls as well as boys were beaten with canes and rulers, to a coming of age in adolescence and the author's first disastrous dance and date with a boy. In particular, the author depicts the phenomenon of being a twin, and the stereotypical views about twins after the war that affected both herself and her sister. There is a subtle undercurrent of Welsh identity in the endearing characters of the author's Welsh-speaking grandmother, "Nangi", and her humorous English-speaking Nanny, and the ensuing battle that erupts when the author in grammar school decides to speak Welsh. And beneath everything, the War is an ever-looming presence reminding everyone to take nothing for granted. A memoir of perception and compassion.

This third book by Sam Samuc might be best described as a classic bar joke. However, in Sam's case, the joke would go like this: "Three timeless psychic mediums, the world's richest man, a phallically insecure insurance salesman, a Truman Capote doppelganger, a black graduate student from Boston, and a bunch of feuding aliens with their own agendas all walk into a bar in Vincennes, Indiana. They're there to find an ancient dagger, build a new Stonehenge, and - oh, yeah - cause the end of the world." Doesn't sound very funny? Hey, if that old adage is true - "the keys to good comedy are volume and repetition" - then Sam Sumac has successfully used his brand of dark comedy here to loudly and repeatedly poke fun at the way the characters in the story all exhibit the seven deadly sins: qualities that Sam clearly believed were universal. In end, perhaps the best way to view this book should come from what Sam himself wrote in his notes about it: "Reading this book might make you happier than a possum (Didelphis virginiana) up a pant leg."

Nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus warned that false teachers would enter into the church to deceive even the very elect. When Rome realised that the rise of Christianity could not be stopped, it exchanged the laurel wreath of the Caesars for the Papal Tiara and took control of the movement that threatened its very survival. The Paganism of Imperial Rome was given a “Christian” makeover to create an “image” that caused the whole world to worship the Beast.

It’s easy to lose all sense of time in such beautiful surroundings, as poet and nature-lover Marc Harris found during a cycling and walking odyssey across southern Cornwall in the summer of 2012. In Cornish Time, Marc relates his often gruelling but always spectacular journey across Cornwall, from the rugged cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula, to the incredible Lost Gardens of Heligan, to the lovely town of Fowey.  In addition, a guide to some of Cornwall’s best tourist attractions and towns is also included, to help you discover some Cornish time for yourself in this beautiful county.

Marc Harris was born in Cardiff, Wales, the United Kingdom, in 1962. Marc has previously written four books and a poetry pamphlet. The natural world has always been a wonder to him, and the themes of nature and the environment always feature strongly in his books. His previous books include Wild and Uncanny Tales – a tribute to the Gothic horror tradition, South and West Wales: Its Wildlife, People and Places, Wild Tales and Rural Rides, a poetry book – Rhythms of Nature, and the poetry pamphlet Sentience.  Marc has also written for magazines such as The Countryman, Explore England, and This England. A lover of cycling, he has cycled thousands of miles in his lifetime, often in pursuit of his fascination with nature and wild places. He now lives with his two rescue cats, in a house in Dinas Powys, in the Vale of Glamorgan. His cats keep him constantly entertained and are wonderful companions which he adores.   ***  What Did You Think of Cornish Time? A big thank you for purchasing this book.
