This thorough analysis provides an answer by a labor economist to Leonard Levy's historical view of Commonwealth v. Hunt and the impact of Chief Justice Shaw's decision on subsequent labor law. Rare works by Sayre (1922), Witte (1926), Nelles (1932), Landis (1942), Teller (1940), Forkosch (1962), and Levy (1957) are reviewed and compared. Their several interpretations are tested by a content analysis of the cases themselves, providing a unique source of the relevant but often unavailable original sources. Four tables of case characteristics, a table presenting the judges' hostility scale, and 14 pages of notes and related legal references aid the reader. The preface places the conspiracy issue in the modern perspective of the 1964 House of Lords decision of Rookes v. Barnard. Originally published in 1967.

This publication offers an analysis of wages, working conditions, and human relations in British coal mines before and after public ownership was established in 1947. It is amply augmented with supplements which include photographs, charts, and tables of statistics on wages, productivity, grievances, strikes, occupational disease, accidents, and comparisons among industries and countries. An extensive bibliography on sources and collateral references is included. Men Underground is a valuable work for libraries with research collections in the social sciences, as well as for those interested in miners, labor relations, or the controversy over public and private ownership. Originally published in 1969.

Since the paradisal yearnings of ancient Sumeria, the concept of utopia has persisted as a symbol of hope. These essays provide a broad spread of perspectives on the ways the utopian vision has appeared, ranging from the "heavenly garden" of the ancient Near East, through Sir Thomas More's Utopia and the idealized societies of feminist science fiction, to the utopian/dystopian expressions of Kurt Vonnegut. The Utopian Vision is enhanced by a fully annotated bibliography of more than 500 works by utopian authors or on aspects of utopia. Originally published in 1983.

The ancient poets tell us that in the year 776 B.C. a young cook from Elis won a great footrace in a meadow near the river Alpheus at Olympia. The youth, Coroebus, was crowned with a wreath of wild olive twigs and thus became the first recorded victor in the ancient Olympic Games. From this beginning there evolved an alliance of sport and the arts that no culture or civilization since the Greeks has been able to achieve. During the summer of 1984, a collection of scholars, athletes, and artists from various disciplines convened in Coroebus's honor to celebrate the alliance of sport and the arts with the formation of the Sport Literature Association. The papers in this volume, most of which were presented at the Coroebus Conference, are devoted to examining and furthering the understanding of that alliance. The Coroebus Conference, and particularly the resulting writings compiled in this volume, are a long overdue recognition of a neglected relationship. This book could well provide the impetus to recapture the alliance from which both sport and the arts benefitted so well in the past. Originally published in 1989.

Autobiographical but not primarily an autobiography, Tod Sloan, By Himself was published in England in 1915. Tod Sloan, a brash American jockey who pioneered a new style of riding tells a story which is an apology, an explanation, an effort at vindication, a final desperate appeal against his fate. This gives the book an unusual quality of urgency and pathos, a tone very different from that of the typical athletic success story. Melancholy is always close to the surface, even in the chapters recording some of his triumphs. An insightful introduction to this unusual look at turn-of-the-century racing on both sides of the Atlantic is written by John Dezikes, Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Originally published in 1988.
