Some of the recent projections of manpower requirements have relied on the assumption that the structure of employment by occupations will remain fixed over the entire period of projections. Using Indian data, the author of this book has shown that this is an implausible assumption, and the projections based on such assumptions are likely to be erroneous, The author, therefore, suggests to develop a methodology of manpower forecasting which accounts for the inter-temporal variations in the structure of employment It is further argued that such a methodology would also be helpful for planning expansion of education in the country, Two structural methods—namely, the Markov probability formulation and the RAS adjustment technique—and a single equation regression model (which posits that demand for skills are determined by production technology) of occupational forecasting are chosen in this study to assessing the predictive power of each of these techniques, Much of this book is devoted to highlight the theoretical details and the data requirements of these techniques reference, This is followed by an application of these techniques with Indian data—both at macro and micro levels, The results of this study favour the use of RAS method as a limited information model of occupational forecasting in economies which lack detailed manpower statistics. While the study in question is based on Indian data, it is surmised that the findings of this book would be of considerable importance for other developing countries as well. Moreover, it is hoped that the methodology and techniques illustrated will stimulate further research into factors affecting evolution of occupational coefficients in the context manpower planning in developing er mies.

Globalization is an unavoidable reality in the modern world. Most of the countries have accepted it either willingly or unwillingly. Divergent views for and against globalization have been expressed. One view is that globalization has created opportunities for development in several countries, while the other view does not accept this contention of the supporters of globalization. There are many questions which are raised at different p atforms. Some of these are: What is globalization? What are the fundamental factors involved in globalization? Who wants globalization? How does globalization affect different people? Whether globalization is beneficial for developing nations? The answer to some of the these questions to some extent, can be found in the articles in this volume written by eminent scholars. An attempt has been made to discuss globalization, in general, and its impact on people, society and state, in particular. The book also examines various issues concerning social, political and economic aspects of India and Canada.

This is an empirical inquiry into the regional and structural aspects of industrialisation and economic development with specific reference to the economy of Karnataka. Greater accent is given to the study of the inter-em. The author rightly points out that industrialisation brings with it a wide range of social and political problems, not merely economic changes. However, care has been taken to isolate the economic consequences of industrialisation. Among other things, the author brings out the conflict between the development paths pointed out by ''efficiency'' and by ''equity'', the former favouring concentration and the latter favouring dispersion. The empirical findings and the policy implications derived there from would be of much use to the planners in the State of Karnataka, and also to all those who are concerned with regional planning and development in other parts of the country.

The book is a time felt publication to see how nutrition, hygiene and health care can form a strategic trio which is empirically based on a case study and has well been analyzed with the help of multi-variate analytical technique. This is both experimental and perceptual inpretation on the dynamics of health ecology which promises huge strategic implication, both at micro and macro level operations.

It appears, lately the western world is reconciling to three ideas. First life is one. In the name of specialisation, to take a sectarian view is not correct. So, now inter-disciplinary researches are increasingly becoming popular. Secondly, progress cannot start from zero. It must be linked to the past. Culture cannot be suddenly asked to go. Thirdly, materialism alone is not a satisfactory answer to happiness. Dr. S.S. Gupta has incorporated all the three aspects in the present work, which predominantly belongs to the discipline of economics. While defining Goal, he has talked of an all-round, integrated and balanced growth of life. He has called it Anand, i.e., permanent happiness. While dealing with Tools, he has tried to bank upon the traditional tools of family, family function and national festivals, mass media, etc. And while discussing Strategies, he has discussed along with economic strategy the supporting social and political strategies. His ideas of District States for maximum decentralisation of power and Samrasta for social rejuvenation are thought provoking. His suggestion to take up selected areas, instead of the whole country, for a planned integrated development and saturate it with resources in a period of time, say five years, and take it to the take-off stage within this period and then leave it to its fate, deserves serious attention. This is a readable book, full of challenging ideas.

The present study is a unique attempt in the estimate of factor shares and savings by income classes. These estimates are used to explain a deceleration in the growth rate in industrial production and consequently a lower growth rate in the Net National Product in India during the later half of the sixties. The author starts with the existing hypotheses and their validity. He advances his own hypothesis of scarcity of investible resources as the main cause of slow down in the investment and consequently deceleration in the growth. Scarcity of resources is explained in terms of a decline in the institutional savings and a decline in the growth rate in savings by the Household Sector. For explaining a decline in the growth rate in household savings during the later half of the sixties, an indepth study has been made of relative shares of various classes and their propensity to save. It has been shown in the study that in the Private Corporate Sector the demand for investible resources rose : One, because at the margin the ratio of capital cost to labour cost was lower which further declined because of "Payment of Bonus Act 1965". Along with this, savings also declined and consequently demand for resources from the Household Sector rose. In the Public Sector also, on the one hand, because of employment programme and / various development programmes, the demand for investible resources rose, on the other hand, its savings declined leading to an increase in the demand for resources from the Household Sector. In the case of Household Sector, due to changes in the distribution of income amongst the various saving classes, the growth rate in savings declined. This led to scarcity of investible resources and consequently lower growth rate in the national product.

Migration within the country, particularly of males, is mainly motivated by the desire to improve economic conditions and can be considered a sensitive index of economic opportunities. This book examines the impact on the redistribution of population on the basis of internal migration based on the data of the 1971 census. This redistribution does notexplain in true sense the quantum and characteristics at various points of time which usually help in determining the real redistribution. However, it defines the directionsand quantum with some significance as to how the population has been displaced in the country. The main emphasis is on the identification of characteristics mostly on the consideration of inter-district and intra-district displacements. Besides, a view is presented with the population shift to urban centres and agglomerations of population of 100,000 and above leading to inter-state migration. The parameters of study of internal movement need an overall consideration of developmental processes and communities and the level of responses and hence the data collection may demand micro synthesis. In this connection, it may be desirable to find out some way to assess the migration in households as this level is disintegrating both in rural and urban sectors at the level of family system, religions and sects ; on the other hand the agricultural and industrial relationships are difficult to articulate regional balance. It is essential to generate a system to study these with data so that at micro level redistribution can be established in long and short distances, within or through the points of geographic locations suitably dvided in tiers to and from with economic inputs across the borders.

The contemporary world fe passing through structural crises, during which a transition must be made from a set of socio-economic and institutional arrangements shaped by mass production technologies to another based on a new constellation of flexible technologies dependent on low-cost electronics. The emerging socio-technical system in which international trade and cross-country technical diffusion play an increasingly important role is being characterized by new patterns of investment propelled by new communication infrasthictural networks, by new patterns of business organization, by fresh socio-spatial structures, and by new global initiatives for peace. This broad-ranging transition in a global political economy has critical implications for development patterns and policies. The superpower hegemony is being replaced by global interdependence. One notices rapid changes in regional economies within countries and the regions which were once forward have lost to those which were traditionally backward. In the new dispensation of technology, some of the old regions which lost ground have re-emerged, and many which were poor have become poorer. The papers included in this volume present a general survey of the global, national and regional changes taking place in the socio-economic structures to cope with the new political and technological imperatives. Most of the papers are based on case studies in Latin America. Asia. Africa, Europe and North America and cover a wide spectrum of problems and issues confronting national economies in the process of structural transformation.

Busy lifestyle, increasing trend of nuclear family and rapid increase in urban population has widened the emotional gaps between individuals in the family. As a result, trend of keeping a dog as pet is increasing, because a dog can fulfill their emotional gaps, ensure the family safety, and sometimes, can perform some specific work. Dog breeding and veterinary practice is now a flourishing business in big cities or even small towns. Dog owners, particularly those keeping a pet for the first time, may juggle many questions/problems, where a professional or expert advice is required. But, getting these services all the time may by costly or impossible. Therefore, it is always advisable to get acquitted with various aspects of dog keeping like housing, feeding, hygiene, and health care management etc. before bringing a dog home. This book contains all necessary information and can answer almost all the queries raised by a novice pet owner, dog breeder and animal welfare activists. It describes all aspects of keeping a dog right from early days; hence everybody including veterinary undergraduate/postgraduate students, field veterinary practitioners, scientists and pet owners will be benefitted. However, readers may find some information given in the book different or contradictory to other books. Here, emphasis has been given to practical experience and Indian conditions over the information given in western books. Moreover, there may be more than one way to solve any problem. This book is written in simple language avoiding unnecessary use of technical (medical/veterinary) words/terminologies, so that any lay man can easily understand its contents.

This book, to be called in strict sense, is a practical manual, to cater to the needs of Veterinary community. This manual is based on the revised and current VCI Syllabus meeting the norms of MSVE Guidelines 2008. This particular volume of the series covers the course, Veterinary Andrology & Reproductive Techniques, VGO-511. The revised guidelines were enforced recently, and ever since, the old laboratory manuals which were available by the respective colleges became outdated. Hence, there was no manual available in the market according to the latest and revised syllabus. Hence a need was felt by us to come out with a book, unique in its class, first of its kind in the field of Veterinary Obstetrics in India, which will cater to the needs of the undergraduate students studying in different colleges of India, as now a uniform syllabus pattern is observed by Veterinary Council of India. Hence, this Volume three of the three manual series covering the three undergraduate courses in Veterinary Gynaecology & Obstetrics Department, will serve as a guide for the Practical portion of VGO-511 course. At the end of each topic, we have given student exercises, which had to be completed after completion of practical and submitted to the concerned course teacher. Besides this, this manual would also serve as ready reckoner for Practising Veterinarians or Academicians, as it has all the details of the andrological and advanced reproductive technologies, which are of immense value. Therefore, we feel very happy to introduce before you “A Practical Manual of Veterinary Obstetrics”.

Stress environment is one of the major limiting factors for the crop productivity. Stress can be classified into biotic and abiotic according to the nature of the responsible factor. Abiotic stress refers to the stress caused by water, salt, oxygen, CO2, light, temperature, nutrients, etc. About 10% of the arable land of the world alone are categorized as free of abiotic stresses. The remaining include, 20% under some kind of mineral stress, 26% affected by drought stress, 15% by freezing stress and the remaining area under other type of stresses. Extensive information on various aspects of abiotic stresses has been generated in the recent past. However, this information remains scattered. Hence an attempt has been made to bring an exhaustive collection of various stresses among different crops. This book provides comprehensive uploaded coverage of key aspects of abiotic stresses and their management. The authors of this book are experts in their own field of specialization and the topics covered in this book include, Global warming, High temperature stress, Drought including molecular approaches, Salt tolerance and abiotic stress on seed quality. This book will serve as a compendium for understanding and management of various abiotic stresses which will be highly useful for scientists and research scholars of agriculture.
