Named one of the Best Indie Historical Novels of 2015 (Kirkus Reviews). Also honored by the Catholic Press Association, the Independent Book Publisher Awards, and the National Indie Excellence Awards. Set in the English Dark Ages. A warrior gives his son to a monastery that rides the border between two rival Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Growing up in a land wracked by war and plague, the child learns of the oath that binds him to the church and forces a cruel choice upon him. To love one father, he must betray another. The decision he makes shatters his world and haunts him forever. This quietly exotic novel places us compellingly in another time, another place, where chieftains fear holy men, holy men fear the world, and prayer has the primal force of fire. While entirely a work of fiction, the novel's background is historically accurate. Readers will find themselves treated to a history of the Dark Ages unlike anything available today outside of textbooks and original source material.

This book is the personal memoir of a daughter who discovers and tries to manage the onset of Lewy body dementia in her mother. Written in clear English by a layperson, it is not technical or scientific. Instead, it highlights the daughter's own experiences and lessons learned -- as well as mistakes -- as she embarks on an unwelcome journey. The aim of the book is to help others who suddenly find themselves in the role of caregiver, especially those who have little training or experience with dementia patients. It discusses issues such as recognising the early symptoms of dementia, how to adapt the home to support the person suffering from dementia, and how to secure and manage the services of medical doctors, home health care workers, and hospice nurses. It describes coping with the frightening symptoms of the disease, such as psychotic episodes, as well as some of the less serious side effects, such as brief memory losses. It also emphasises the power and the importance of humour when one is faced with a deadly disease. Lewy body dementia kills about 250,000 people a year in the United States. There is no cure. This book is candid and supportive in its discussion of how to prepare for the end.

In a collection of memories resembling pages snatched from a scrapbook, a leading physician and academic researcher reflects on the unpredictability of life. Medical school at Vanderbilt led to a series of life-altering experiences. A brief stint collecting blood samples from freshly slaughtered cattle in a Nashville abattoir left him with bespattered shirts and a dark apprehension of the closeness of death. Throughout his career, the polarity and inseparability of life and death have haunted him, a platform for savouring good times and exotic destinations when they came his way. This tragic sense has also fuelled Dr Brigham's avocation of writing fiction, including several published novels in which university hospitals provide the backdrop for tales of mystery, ambition, and suspense. Now retired, the author looks back at a life that carried him to a series of academic pinnacles -- The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; the CDC in Atlanta; the University of California, San Francisco; once more to Vanderbilt, in Nashville; and then, finally, to Atlanta's Emory University.

At fifteen Blanche Nero watches the electrocution of her Italian immigrant father, punishment for the inexplicable brutal murder of his recently acquired friend Old Man Flaherty. She resolves to do something with her life that values humanity over justice, mercy over sacrifice. But she is forever haunted by the mystery of her father. She is also drawn irresistibly to the bigger human mysteries of violence and death. After a gruelling but successful academic career at some of the nation's finest university hospitals, Blanche is almost sixty. Her long career as a trauma surgeon at Charity Hospital in New Orleans has been abruptly ended by Hurricane Katrina. She takes a year sabbatical from the medical school and leases a small flat in Venice, seeking an understanding of her father in the place where he lived his formative years--and of herself by reliving and recording her own remarkable life. On a cold morning in Piazza San Marco, Blanche meets Count Lorenzo Ludovici (Ludo), an aging, elegant, and charming Venetian who is dying of AIDS. Blanche is drawn to him and is uncharacteristically self-revealing. As he introduces her to his beautiful city as their relationship develops and is health deteriorates Blanche becomes ever more fond of the count. As she relives her past by writing down what she remembers, she sees the girl she was and the woman she became with new eyes; the mystery of her father's death; her distant mother; her sometimes misguided adolescent efforts to grow up. And then discovering the thrill of medicine, especially the sensual trill of trauma surgery and losing herself in in that career, immersed in violence. She recalls her attempts at relationships, especially with Jesse Pinto, the one man whom she has ever loved, and how she ended that. She remembers her love affair with the Big Easy and Charity Hospital (the Big Free) that came suddenly to a violent end. Through a series of painful and revealing conversations, Blanche and Ludo discover that each of them has private knowledge of interlocking pieces of their history. Blanche feels sadness of a depth that she has not felt before, but also a strange sense of freedom. Perhaps, at last, she is ready to begin her life.

The Henry Bagwell Story is a remarkable tale of survival and achievement against great odds. Henry Bagwell was an enterprising young man from a prosperous merchant family in Exeter, Devon, England. A passenger on the ill-fated "Third Supply" mission that shipwrecked on the reefs of Bermuda en route to Jamestown in 1609, Bagwell earned the unofficial title of "adventurer" and the official designation of "Ancient Planter."Bagwell was in the early wave of seventeenth-century English pioneers who dared to cross a dangerous ocean (in his case, more than once); to serve his time in the development and defense of a new land; and then to take possession of the acreage for which he had worked. He was an important personality in the emerging society of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the progenitor of a substantial family. This is the first biography that has been written about him.

Ohio housewife Sherry Shriner grew to prominence as a social media cult leader, flourishing in the era of conspiracy theories and the 9/11 Truther movement. She preached the virtues of mysterious orgone energy and Christian prayer as defensive shields against the forces of darkness, including: Lucifer and his demons; reptilian shapeshifters masquerading as human elites; the New World Order; cell phone towers; even hostile UFOs that flamed out over her home, visible only as shooting stars. Amazingly, she built a coterie of passionate devotees. The more outrageous the lie, the more fervent their belief. In 2017, she told follower Steven Mineo that his girlfriend, Barbara Rogers, was a witch who would kill him. A month later, Steven was dead, and Barbara was in jail charged with his murder. Steven's death proved Sherry's divinity to her followers, but in reality, he was just the latest casualty in a string of online trolling attacks that had left an earlier believer dead of suicide and still more cast into the outer darkness of cyberspace.
