Sher Music Co ,U.S. – förlag

Written in the language of the working jazz musician, this book is easy to read and user-friendly. At the same time, it is the most comprehensive study of jazz harmony and theory ever published. Via 500+ pages of text and more than 750 musical examples, it takes the student from the most basic techniques such as chord construction and the II-V-I progression through scale theory, the blues, "I've Got Rhythm" changes, slash chords, the bebop and pentatonic scales, how to read a lead sheet and memorize tunes and a study of reharmonization that is almost a book in itself. The author, Mark Levine, has worked with Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, and many other jazz greats.

The Cellular Approach is a practical method for developing the ability to create convincing jazz solos in a wide variety of playing situations.

It takes actual jazz lines recorded by master players and then slices them up into small "cells" that can be re-combined into longer lines to fit almost any harmonic situation.

This enables the player to improvise his or her own lines that sound just as interesting and melodic as the masters without resorting to simply copying others. Fingerings and string choices are often given too, making it particularly valuable to guitarists who want to actually master their instrument.

Some of the harmonic situations dealt with include:

There is a complete discussion of how to break out of diatonic-derived lines by using the cellular approach to create "side-slipping" and other intervallic lines — creating ultra-hip solo phrases in the style of modern masters such as Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker and Herbie Hancock.

Finally, the cell concept gets transcended as twelve tone rows in the style of Mike Stern and others are explored, as well as lines derived from "23rd chords" — for the adventurous that are interested in paving a way into the future.

Contains detailed explanations and exercises on virtually everything a guitarist needs to start playing jazz with others, including different categories of chord voicings, comping tips for being in a rhythm section, plus scale and chord construction. The ultimate jazz guitar reference book, it also features charts for classic jazz tunes to work on, ways to approach practicing jazz, right hand picking techniques, overall jazz theory and tips on developing solo chops by using riffs and pieces of familiar melodies.

At last! A simple, easy-to-learn method for playing the melodies of your favorite tunes, using hip voicings as played by Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, etc. Famed jazz pianist and author of “The Jazz Piano Book,” Mark Levine has created “The Menu” — a succinct guide to learning a multitude of voicings so you can harmonize melodies on the spot.

‘So What’ chords, upper structures, 4th chords, etc. are not only good for ‘comping,’ but are also ideal for voicing melodies. For example, the note G in the melody on top of a D-7 chord is the 4th of the chord. Did you know that a ‘stacked 3rd’ voicing, as well as the ‘Kenny Barron chord’ would be perfect for that? This book explains all of that, so you can instantly play jazz songs with the best available voicings.

Using two standards and a bebop melody as examples, Mark breaks each tune up into four-bar sections, then shows the best voicings to use on each chord and why those choices were made. These voicings are all drawn from a one-page ‘Menu’ that, once internalized, will allow you to spontaneously create your own style of playing jazz piano, based on the masters of the art form.
