When Philip Guston turned to the medium of lithography in the early sixties, he was regarded as one of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism in the United States. At that time, his art was already showing signs of the change that would lead to the later representational works that dominated the last decade of his career. The impressive series of black-and-white lithographs that Guston made shortly before his death in 1980 incorporates, as a sort of visual autobiography, the complete repertoire of objects that marked his return to powerful pictorial representation: simple everyday items, clocks, shoes, books, cigarettes, ashtrays, and occasionally his beloved sandwiches and cherries. All of these things, taken from the world of the private and intimate, are given a unique vitality by Gusto' s ironic eye and deliberate hand in the soft cadences of the lithographic crayon.

Philip Guston always had eminent artist friends. Tireless in his quest for the unknown, the still undiscovered, Guston engaged poets and literati in intense dialogues that, starting in the sixties, led to fruitful collaborations - including the creation of numerous illustrations and cover images for works by poets such as William Corbett, Bill Berkson, and Clark Coolidge. In his "poem-pictures," Guston ultimately turned to producing interactions of text and drawings - as responses to poems by his writer friends or as independent works that incorporated selected lines of poetry. Also available:Philip Guston: Prints ISBN 9783944874180.

The complex oeuvre of the American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) comprises a time period of around six decades, during which it never lost any of its expressive power. Twombly was one of the most productive artists in the history of more recent art. Acclaimed as one of the most important painters of the second half of the 20th century, he fused the legacy of American Abstract Expressionism with European and Mediterranean culture. The book focuses to a degree never before seen on his major cycles: Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). The artist's development as a whole is traced based on nearly 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs. This thus provides unique insights into the overall intellectual and sensual richness of the oeuvre. From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s, which are characterised by the use of text, to his compositions of the 1960s, his reaction to the minimal art and conceptual art of the 1970s to his final paintings, the overview of the oeuvre underscores the significance of the series and cycles in which Cy Twombly invented history painting anew. With its polyphonic conception, the monograph offers numerous approaches with essays that shed light on the various aspects and phases of Twombly's path as an artist. It comprises et al. the reflections and personal impressions of other artists as well as the memories of his assistant Nicola Del Roscio. These diverse testimonies make it possible to discover Cy Twombly not only as an artist, but also as an individual.

With a superb eye for the beauty and inconsistencies of inconspicuous details, the photobook In Secret: Friederike von Rauch presents astounding views of interior spaces. Her compositions of light and shadow, devoid of people, disclose a subtle artistic aesthetic and are at times evocative of abstract painting. This volume features photographs from different series produced between 2009 and 2013. Her photographs - all taken with an analogue camera and in natural light - are characterised by an interaction of spatial experiences. Seen from von Rauch's point of view, dark alcoves, bare walls, individual objects, and traces of the human hand develop a life of their own while at the same time allowing space for interpretation.

"To contribute to the improvement of public taste" was the stated intention of art collector Karl Ernst Osthaus. The Hagen-born son of a banker, Osthaus assembled a private collection that later became the basis of the Museum Folkwang's remarkable treasure trove of art. Located in Essen, the museum is best known for its distinguished holdings of masterpieces from the era of the avant-garde to the mid-twentieth century. The focus is on the period extending from Paul Cezanne to Max Beckmann, including artists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh; renowned contemporary artists such as Martin Kippenberger and Lothar Baumgarten are also represented in the collection. Sculptures and installations round out this impressive and sensitively designed volume.

"I am the unit of measurement." Fiete Stolte divides the day into twenty-one hours to create a week with eight days, and thereby centres his works on himself as an object of observation and experimentation. A specially designed clock lends visual expression to his alternate way of calculating time; live projections of Stolte's showing shifted sleeping cycles serve as time sculptures that portray the artist's parallel world. For Drawing Your Mirror, Stolte cast his own hand in graphite, making a "pencil" of his index finger; in Eye, the pupil of an eye contains a reflection of the self instead of the outside world.

Christoph Brech has enjoyed a privilege unlikely to be granted to anyone else any time soon. For three years he was allowed to photograph the halls and galleries of the Vatican Museums unhindered by the never-ending throngs of visitors. On his day - and night-time - excursions through the countless exhibition spaces and the Sistine Chapel, he captured images of extraordinary tranquility. His photographs show one of the most famous museums in the world as no one else has seen it: suites of rooms devoid of people, artworks on dignified display, hidden corners. In this superb-quality picture book, Brech's photographs are presented alongside historical images from the Vatican archives. Arnold Nesselrath, director of the department of Byzantine, medieval, and modern art at the Vatican Museums, provides a stimulating introduction to the history of the institution. A beautifully illustrated publication that offers new perspectives on the many attractions of this magnificent world-class museum.

Presentation of all 36 of Franz Marc's small-format pencil drawings, produced shortly before his death.

Philip Guston (1913-1980) is one of the outstanding figures in twentieth century American art. Beginning as a muralist in the thirties, Guston embraced the lyrical vocabulary of Abstract Expressionism in his paintings and drawings after his move to the East Coast. Following an artistic crisis in the mid-sixties, his return to figuration focusing first on simple things of ordinary life, later evolving to the enigmatic and iconic cartoonlike forms for which he is now best known shook the art world. Night Studio is a deeply personal account of growing up in the shadow of a great artist, a daughter's quest to better understand her father, based on letters and notes by the artist, and interviews with those who knew him. First published to critical acclaim in 1988, this beautifully designed new edition is richly illustrated with a new selection of photographs and paintings, many in colour. The German photographer Boris Becker is one of the most prominent representatives of the Dusseldorf School. In his newest series, Staged Confusion, Becker investigates different forms of chaos in interior and exterior spaces. He captures the individual (dis)order of cities and private interiors - construction sites, excavation sites, the rooftops of Aleppo in Syria, workshops, sweatshops, and kitchens. Composed as single images, these large-format works, which are from different series, are starkly interrelated in terms of form and content in spite of their heterogeneity. The photographs expose the beauty of what appears to be chaotic at first glance. At the same time the ambivalence of ordered and unordered situations brings up questions about the social principles of order.

Since 2004-05, the producers of the 'Gute Aussichten - New German Photography' competition have presented their winning photos at over one hundred solo shows. The competition fills a gap in the art world, which had previously left it up to chance or good luck to decide whether talented new photographers gained attention. The competition takes place every year, and the magazine Der Spiegel describes it as "Germany's most prestigious competition for new photography." This book showcases the top entries to the competition. The travelling exhibition starts on the 19th of November 2016 at the NRW-Forum in Dusseldorf, Germany. It will appear at different venues worldwide throughout 2017.

Ross Lovegrove is an internationally renowned designer and visionary, whose works are celebrated as the new aesthetic expression of the twenty-first century. His industrial design is inspired by the logic and beauty of nature. It connects technology and innovative production methods with new materials and an intelligent, organic vocabulary of forms, in an inimitable way. By carefully selecting, combining, and composing these elements he succeeds in inventing a completely unique language of his own. A very human vision and a sustainable, inventive approach form the basis for all of his work. His philosophy is rooted in elegant functionalism. Despite all of the imaginativeness and pleasure in experimentation revealed in his body of work, he considers himself a thinker whose interest is not in the pretentious, but in the development of sensible, useful things. At the heart of this monograph, therefore, is a lasting combination of high standards and creativity, design and nature, and the latest technologies from the fields of physics, biology, anthropology, and ecology.

Painter, illustrator, sculptor, Screenplay author, journalist, costume and stage designer: The renowned Georgian artist Rezo Gabriadse (*1936) is all this and much more. Life itself is always at the centre of his oeuvre, with the tragi-comical moments of everyday existence that he captures in many different ways, through his enormously intentive spirit, his creative powers and his intelligence. Throughout "a delicate, melancholy undertone runs through the creations of this gentle poet, like a cantus fimrus," writes Michael Semff. Gabriadze's paintings and the gouaches, which tend toward the painterly, comprise the centrepiece of this richly illustrated volume. The art of a great man, whose works have already been seen in famous museums like the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Dostoyevsky Museum in Moscow, the Pushkin Museum and the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. This multi-talent has drawn international attention, especially since opening his puppet theatre in Tiflis in 1981. This allowed him to fulfill one of his dearest wishes: to create a small universe in which all of the creative strings are held by his own hand, so to speak.
