Drawn from the research efforts of more than 6,700 SABR members, The National Pastime establishes an accurate, lively, and entertaining historical record of baseball. A Note from the Editor, Mark Alvarez: This year we have the longest piece we've ever published in The National Pastime, Dick Thompson's cover story on Wes Farrell, which you'll find sturdily anchoring the issue, just before Dan Zamudio's pair of closing verses. You can also savor the first long poem we've ever run, B.H. Fairchild's "Body and Soul," which you'll find when you turn this page. These two unique offerings sandwich an especially chewy issue. Don't miss George Thompson's historic discovery of a baseball reference in the New York press of 1823; our three grouped pieces relevant to the hundredth anniversary of the American League; or Jim Smith's pictorial appreciation of Hall-of-Fame Chicago sportswriter Ed Munzel. You'll find other offerings that incorporate medieval art, the American Civil War, a president, a player who just doesn't want to talk about it, dignity and incivility, a pitching professor, and a Battalion of Death. And there's more: on ballparks, on tours, on forgotten players and their forgotten feats. On what-ifs and how-comes. Looking down the bench, a pretty strong lineup for today's game.

Seven articles discuss some aspect of baseball during WW2 or immediately following the war. Jim Smith's wonderful homage to Chicago photographer George Brace, written and edited with the cooperation of George's daughter Mary Brace, is the cover article. Her recollections form the captions for her father's wonderful images. Brace's career photographing ballplayers began in the late 1920s and covered eight decades. Not even Minnie Minoso can match that! For forty years, Brace shot in black & white, but finally switched to color in 1959. His cover image of the great Stan Musial at Wrigley Field was shot that season, while the back cover photo of Billy Williams and Curt Flood was made ten years later. Tom Barthel writes a lively account of Joe Medwick and Leo Durocher's little-known USO trip in Italy at the height of WW2, while Steve Bullock's analysis on the war's impact on hitters is an intriguing one. Eric Moskowitz recounts how The Sporting News was on the forefront of the effort to support the war—and baseball. Going back a few decades, Bill Nowlin makes a persuasive case that the Pilgrims—Boston, that is—never existed. Steve Steinberg's account of spitballers before and after 1920 is admirably researched, while Sam Bernstein looks at the same era, discussing George Sisler and the National Commission. A quartet of profiles of little known major leaguers—one of which is from SABR's noteworthy Bioproject—are fine reading.

This is a collection of more than 170 photos and two dozen essays and which tell the 120-year history of baseball in the Pacific Northwest. The stories range chronologically from the origins of the professional game in the region in the 1890s through the account of the 2001 season of the Seattle Mariners and focus on baseball in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Tacoma, and Vancouver, British Columbia.

In Batting Four Thousand: Baseball in the Western Reserve are twenty  articles about people, events, and ideas from the four corners of that “strange and wonderful thing we call Cleveland baseball,” as editor Brad Sullivan calls it. The all-star roster of contributors includes leading SABR researchers and Cleveland sportswriters who share their deep knowledge of Cleveland’s professional teams, including the Buckeyes and Tate Wars, as well as of the storied Indians—even of Cleveland’s brief entry in the American Association. For the significance of the journal’s enigmatic title, see Russell Schneider’s moving piece about Gomer Hodge.

The flagship publication of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), the Baseball Research Journal is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed publication presenting the best in SABR member research on baseball.
